Every dragon boater improves tremendously when they paddle an OC1. The OC1 reveals all your paddling weaknesses that can be hidden in a dragon boat.

Wish we could afford more OCs and had warmer weather to go with it! Tad nippy in the North East, so we use converted Concept 2 ergs for time trialing before the on water season starts. Not ideal, but it's what we have to work with.

hi robert, thanks for the excellent instruction. my db club uses a 2 min oc1 tt as a major metric for crew selection (the other 2 metrics are 500m p-erg tt and in-boat db performance). since my oc1 2m tt goal is to get 350m or more, i've started using a speedcoach as my main oc1 training tool; particularly the #meters/stroke and stroke rate (with the goals of 3m/stroke and 58+ strokes/minute) using my other db club's ancient, heavy oc1s. any thoughts on use of the speedcoach? or on the p-erg? thanks again for posting these super instructive vids; they're the best!

@larrylambert6330 speedcoach is a great way to observe the data and piece it all together. The last 2 videos on spm and dps combine together well for users with a speedcoach to chase the right metrics.
Paddle erg isn't bad by any means. It's a device that can be "cheated" in some ways to maximize a high score that doesn't translate to the water. Primarily by pushing the top hand down then pulling it horizontally towards the body on the X axis. Because you're pulling on a string and not water you can get much more powerful force at the end of your stroke this way. You can see it reveal itself in paddlers on the water with a "perg" stroke. Same issue in kayak too.
The other factor is it doesn't attribute body weight at all only pure power output. This is why concept 2 rowing results are categorized into lightweight and heavyweight divisions. On the water the factor of body weight is introduced but ergs don't have the luxury. Bigger stronger paddlers that learn to yank on the cable can appear to have insane speeds but usually have a big disconnect immediately in a real paddle to water scenario.

Would you recommend by specific distances or by time increments?

@MsJennyu I like a set distance but both lead to the same end result ultimately.
The sweet spot is usually 2-3 minutes. 500m is a pretty standard distance or "as far as you can go" for 3 minutes works well.

@@K2NOPS do you do one criteria, or do you also do a separate test for 2ks and longer races?

@alanlee8099 usually one criteria. Gives you a good idea. You can definitely run a 1 minute test for the 200m and a 8-10 minute one for your 2k prospects

What OC-1 time trial distance/time would you recommend for a team that does mostly 10-15 mile OC-6 races?

1 hour time trial usually works or creating a 6-7 mile course. Most paddlers are pretty linear from 1 hour to 2 hour and it's much less physically taxing doing the 1 hour instead of the 2 for the time trial.
