Good video. Never thought of renting a uhaul to tow. One thing I noticed. The way you take of the slack on your safety chains isn’t the best. If the trailer breaks away it would break the snaps and your tongue would drag on the ground. You always want to cross the chains underneath and you want to either shorten the chains to the right length or twist the chains to take up the slack. With the combination of the twisted chains and the crossed chains, of the trailer does disconnect the tongue would fall on the crossed chains keeping it off the ground and keeping the trailer controllable. Just an observation from a guy that’s been towing things for over 50 years.
Something like this should have so many more views than it does- but it only seems to be the click-bait, cutesy-host-thumbnail tours that do well in the scene (and go viral). Its too bad. Very good video guys!
I towed a boat for many years and run a similar set of pre-flight checklist items. One rule on bearings was to have them re-packed every second year and always, at every stop, put the back of your hand up to the hub to check for heat. If you can touch it with the back of your hand it's good to go. Hot, you have issues. Just another item to keep it safe on the road.
Wow - this is a lot more involved than I'd realized. I still plan to get a tiny house - but now I know it's not just about attaching it "somehow" to anything drivable 🙈
Thank you so much for this vital and educational video! I met you both in Escondido, CA when you came to the area a couple of years ago. This was when I was dreaming of owning a tiny house and before I purchased a tiny house from a building company just a few months later. A week ago I had to move my tiny house from Los Angeles to Washington state and didn't own a truck, nor have any experience towing, so didn't know what it entailed or what extras one needed to buy when towing (brake controller, hitch ball and drop bar.) With your video I was able to (essentially "copy and paste" what you did here. :-D and buy all the needed equipment and have my cousin's help with driving the u-haul tiny house in tow to WA. I really appreciated the step by step breakdown in your video to prepare for the trip. We didn't have the luxury of not driving in the rain though. It was pouring as we came up to Northern CA, Oregon and Washington! We made it though! Whew! So beyond grateful for your video!
Wow, so happy to hear this and that you made it safely! This really made our day. It is our sincere desire to help others have the tools they need. ☺️🙏 Where in WA did you land?
Thanks for the reply message and again your video series is excellent. :-) I moved to a small rural town just outside of Olympia. My mom is retiring there and I have it parked in the back. Thanks again for all that you do for the Tiny house Movement! @@TinyHouseExpedition

Christian and Alexa- It was so good to see you in this video- My friend sent me the link and boy was I surprised to see you and to see my ranch in the background of the video!!!👍 Super cool! I even mentioned it to Nina. I just had a gypsy themed tiny house built and am getting ready to go pick it up in Idaho so your videos have been super helpful- thank you and all the best to you!💕
I haven’t gotten my tiny house yet but I’m so excited about doing so! Today I realized my van can’t tow it and I was bummed 🙁 for awhile...thanks for the info and hope! I don’t plan on a lot of towing miles but at least I see you doing it.
The only problem with building a tiny house of more than 10,000lbs(including the trailer) is in some places they don't allow someone to tow more than 10000lbs without having to get a different class of driver's license. For example, if you wanted to tow more than 10,000lbs in Ontario Canada, you would need a class A license.
Good point; thanks for sharing. Building with steel framing is an excellent way to save weight on a tiny house on wheels build. Our friends have a 24’ tiny house with steel framing that is less than 10k lbs 👌👌
@@TinyHouseExpedition Wow 24' less than 10k lbs, now we're talking. Do you know if when travelling to different states of countries like the US to Canada, if you need to comply with different towing regulations, or are you exempt and only have to comply with your home states regulations?
@@razytazz5515 not sure. We traveled across about 30 US states and 1 Canadian province and were never stopped or asked about towing compliance. We recommend keeping your dimensions under 13'6" height and 8'6" wide, otherwise, you may prompt scrutiny.
Where do you get insurance on your tiny home? My daughter bought one from a friend who built without permitting and can't find an insurance company that will cover it.
Very helpful, especially we appreciate your trailer recommendation. Are you insuring the Tiny House as an RV? Do you own your U Haul Truck? Many thanks!
Thanks for kind words! We currently aren't insured but are looking into trip coverage through www.insuremytinyhome.com. U-Haul is our generous truck sponsor. We highly recommend them for DIY towing for those who only want to move occasionally. :)
Did your Drop Hitch (Use with 2-5/16 Ball) come with a pin or lock? The amazon link does not show any pin. We pick up our tiny house in one week, so please let us know:)
We fortunate haven’t had this issue. All 17’ and 20’ trucks we have used have had 7-pin connectors. Wonder if this issue is due to older trucks? Asking for a newer truck might help. 👍
sylvia harris U-Haul is our generous truck sponsor. They make a great DIY tow vehicle option for those only moving occasionally and for those who don't want buy a big, pricey truck. 👍
@@TinyHouseExpedition Ok,,, so that was my question. I wanted to know if you OWNED the truck or maybe friends etc owned a dealership. You kept saying “our” truck.
Wouldn’t just pulling an airstream or using a motorhome be much more practical and cost effective for traveling? Tiny home for more temporary scenario. This seems more expensive just to look cute to strangers
I've been in a motorhome for 16 months. Better for traveling, but rv service people are unavailable, untrustworthy, and generally suck, lol. And manufacturing standards have provided endless 🙄 moments, lol. So unless you want to learn how to do everything yourself, it can be a real headache. I'm dreaming about the quality of a good tiny house and not to mention the better insulation. I'm sticking with motorhome for now, but I might switch eventually, just from accumulated frustration... 😝

What if my tiny home is 13,000 lbs, what uhaul will pull it?
What tires do you recommend for that much weight ?
Good question! We recommend 12 ply tires. 😊
Are these things built to be towed a lot? I feel like it would wear down the house by moving and shaking on the road
For some reason alot of uhaul locations only have a 4 pin hook up. Do you know where I could possibly find one like the one in this video?

so....how do you figure out the weight of your tiny house?
Weighstation but can estimate 450lb per foot of length.
How fast you can go?
65 on a flat road but typically not over 55 mph per highway regs for towing
Sun cell's,,,??? And missions,,,, nothing left,,,.
Can you be inside your tiny house while the house is moving
Not allowed 👍
