By the way, I LOVE MY DOG. She's my baby. I won't be getting rid of her, despite my complaining about the hair and smells. And, yes, I put her outside for the sake of a laugh for the video. But she was let back in moments later with pets and treats.
Tiny House Giant Journey I love my dog too, have people been telling you to get rid of her! Whats her name? and is it hard to find laundromats every place you go? Love from Australia !
Tiny House Giant Journey can get one of these for like 20k in UK, self sufficient, but problem is where would u stay ? Or where would I stay , do u just park up anywhere ? Oh u just answered it , don’t worry
I think a lot of people commenting are taking this the wrong way. There's so many videos out there that highlight the good but not the bad/inconvenient. Videos like this help people make informed decisions so they don't invest their money in something that won't make them happy. She's not attacking tiny houses or trying to convince people not to buy one, just be aware of some of the issues
Yep. This vid is super helpful, like cmon if people want to make a big life decision it's nice to be able to get info on every aspect of it rather than people just singing praises of living in a tiny house and no other thing.... in this case its about how it is for her n her mobile tiny house, great vid. Great info
Everyone can figure that out though.. No shit. Used cars can break, non branding clothes fit like shit, living in a box is very uncomfortable, no shit!!!! But is the only alternative sometimes. Ofcourse is going to suck but guess what? Is yours not the bank's. In a world full of negativity doesn't help when you also shit on the positive. I hope she moved to a $200k home with HOA then.
@@armada2390 Well I have a friend who lives in an HOA and he hates it. Because a lot of HOA's have strict rules that you have to follow. Like for example, the grass in people's yards, aren't allowed to grow over an inch. He had a lot going on in his life and right when he was about to get to it, the treasurer of that HOA got her son out to mow my friend's yard because on the ring video she was heard complaining that "I just can't take it anymore" It's like, your business, becomes their business in an HOA. I remember seeing a video a few years ago where people were having their cars towed in their neighborhood, and it had something to do with the HOA was only allowing the size of a driveway large enough for one vehicle. So if you owned two vehicles, you had to park on the side of the road. Most of the residents went and sued the HOA over it.
Out of four people I still speak to, only one of them I speak to on a daily basis, and that's my partner. Therefore, I won't have anyone else over, which would work out.
At least she was honest about living in a tiny house. First time I heard that. More people should be like her. Most people act like it is so ''GREAT'' living this way.
It's because those people are "content creators" so they need to keep people interested in their contents which mostly highlight their great life style, So they can get more views and get paid from sponsorships. Talking about the downside would more likely make their viewers go away.
I’m not saying it don’t have its ups and downs but honestly, living that was seems wayyy more better to me than constantly depending off our system. Everyone wants everything to be easy and convenient now these days, nobody wants to help fend for themselves and work off grid together. once people realize living more natural ,working together, and connecting with one another is better than selling your soul to a job for about 40-60 years of there life just to get that “new car” or “big Mansion” just to fit in society for “social acceptance” screw that.. it’s what’s kinda screwed up with the world today and why people are so unhappy
I agree. The people who wax lyrical about tiny houses are the ones living in big houses. They wouldn't even want to move to a medium sized house. Often the tiny houses are shown with lots of land around it with an outdoor toilet.
I'm in Victoria, BC and I seriously looked at getting a tiny house a few years ago, but none of the municipalities in BC will allow them. It's so stupid; we're in the middle of a horrendous housing crisis, and this perfect answer is right there, but they're not allowed!! So frustrating!! Take care 🥰🚙🇨🇦
I love BC!! I miss it so much, I wish I lived there again. The mountains, air, trees... everything is gorgeous. A tiny house community would solve a lot of problems there. All they are building is mansions though.
Some places allow them here in the US if they classified as a mobile home or camper and have to be in a park. I don't know if that helps in your case but it might.
These are actually trailers, not houses, and the reason it's hard to insure them is because if there is a fire, they burn quickly and are dangerous. This is what my insurance agent told me. A REAL tiny house would be a cottage and that would not be on wheels, not on a trailer.
Blake Reid farts only smell bad if you are not eating well? Lmao that’s stupid, also not true. Nutritious, fiber rich, plant based foods can also make your farts stink. You sir are full of shit.
What about just an apartment though or room share...I worry that so many people are buying tiny homes and trailers and eventually all that crap is going to the dump! Not very green even if its a green trailer.
Yes. And I think she still left out something. It is a car, not a house, so the value will drop.... See: Last Week Tonight's relatively current episode about so called 'mobile homes' (yes, those are not the same, but the overall problem is the same.).
@All Day Son calm down dude. I know you're depressed and angry at your poor life choices but that isn't anybody else's fault. Also no one is asking you to move into one. The government isn't forcing you. You live wherever you want. A flat, a mansion, a gutter, hey, it's your choice!
I've been living in hotels and tents for 4 years. My son and I are wanting to build a tiny home to save money and have stability. I appreciate this video because I would not have even thought about things like parking and insurance. After living in a single room and a tent for so long I can deal with the dirt and smell and crowding.
No boyfriend, no dog, definitely not having children, all my friends invite me to their place or they live on a different city, I never make the bed and I only posses 2 pair of jeans and 3 t-shirts. This Is The Perfect Lifestyle For Me!!! 😃😃 (I'm totally serious here)
I'm living in a type of tiny house...a narrowboat. She's 57' and 6'8" beam (wide). By time the engine room and bow space is subtracted from the living space, I live in 240sqft of space. I've been aboard just over a year and it's by far the best lifestyle for me. The sense of community in a marina makes all of the difference but if I decide that I want to get away from it all, I can cruise the breathtaking canals and rivers of Britain...at a just a bit faster than walking speed.
@@dennyatnotts This sounds wonderful. I’m in the UK, would you suggest the house boat route to be the best in terms of UK tiny home/off grid living? Struggling to find my way as a newbie to the scene. Currently in Scotland (with cat) Any advice appreciated, hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather!
You open the door and BOOM! you're inside. Unlike in a big house where the door takes you on vacation and a quick trip to Narnia before you pop up in the garden...
We build tiny houses, and we get asked that now and then. Usually our clients plan to keep their THOW in one spot for a couple of years, and are not planning to drive around with it like an RV. (In fact, if Jenna was able to talk about it I'm sure she would agree that these tiny houses can go through engines and transmissions if you have anything less than a 1 ton diesel truck). So if these are staying put for over a year then we typically raise them off the wheels onto concrete blocks and they won't be going anywhere. If they are staying on the wheels, we provide wheel locks that make them impossible to tow.
I loved your whole presentation, being thoughtful, humorous, lighthearted yet serious, informative and so gracefully done. Bravo! and Thank you for such a realistic understanding of what it's like for you.
I thought that too!! When I have to go I don't have time to waste;) Especially if there is prep work to do. If it's about post job done work then fine.
I love the idea of living in a tiny house, but in reality I know I could never be happy in that small of a space or dealing with the toilet. I do love to see how creative people are with their small spaces though.
They make tiny homes that are bigger than hers & if you can find a tiny home village/lot, you could have all the normal utility hook ups of a regular home...there are many more options now!
@@tonyabrookes9931 I would like to have a loft in a tiny home but I would want to be able to stand up in it -- not crawl on my hands and knees in my own bedroom. And I've never heard anybody talk about that. Why can't they just add a few inches, like 5 or so to at least make it 5 ft 10 in so the average person can stand up in it?
@@fightingtosurvive6527 There are many videos showing one long section next to the bed in a loft that is lower, so people can make the bed and access a close next to the bed. That walking area is usually over the apt.-sized frig.
😂 I also get so tired of explaining our outhouse. How to shower or use the toilet. Everything is so different when you're off grid. Simple things like don't leave the TV running all night, only use hot water for showers. Let alone just having 1 television, 1 bathroom. Absolutely loved this video!!!
I've lived in a tiny house on wheels AND in a 4000sqft home AND everything in between AND bottom line is there are pros/cons to all living situations AND knowing what works for you is key. Also, statistically people spend 80 % of their time in 20 % of their home (in bigger homes) kinda like our wardrobe..most of us wear 20% of our clothes 80% of the time 😮😁
Same thing I was telling my Sister yesterday when we were talking about these videos; we’re most of the time in one room, at least I am and venture to bathroom and kitchen at certain times during the day. The main room is my upstairs bedroom during the wintertime (warmer can turn heat back) and living room downstairs during the summer (cooler).
@@genielaury Your statistics are so true! :-) Over the years, I've known people who do well financially and have that big house built that they always wanted but then spend most of the time in the family room that's open space with the kitchen. The rest of the house...crickets.
I'm one of those people that hates the smell of vinegar. I don't know why, I have been like this since a child. I avoid white vinegar like the plague. Lol. 😂
@@wynnhorton1208 i have to keep my indoor humidity in the 60s. tiny houses are insulated, so how do they retain moisture? i would install an air exchanger.
Same. Forced myself to judge her on the spot to prove me wrong if any.. Only an "I think I love you" came out. I'm good. Can I have some of that icecream?
I mean...dunno if you've been in a tornado, but a house that can run away from a tornado is probably safer than a stationary house of just about any size.
Good job! And THANK YOU for telling it like it is! Every point you make is spot on! In 2017 I moved into a rented 340 sq. ft., one bedroom cottage-duplex-style unit. It was my second time downsizing and was strictly out of necessity, as rental housing is rare as golden eggs, in my county, and this was the only affordable place available for the year and a half I was looking for a place. But I decided if I'm downsizing to this degree, I would do it right. When my landlord visited after I was fully moved in, she made an assumption, saying "So you have a storage unit." I said no, if I downsize, I downsize for real. If something doesn't fit into my living space, it doesn't fit into my life. After that, when I first moved in, every female friend or family member who visited would admire the place and say 'Oooh, I could live here! Yeah, I could do this!' Many, many more women believe they can let go of their stuff, and let go of the conveniences that more space gives you, but the reality is very different. I've seen people try, and fail. That said, I make it work because I want it to work, and have learned to let go of 'stuff' so I can focus on a simpler life. I'm even considering a studio unit next. This will probably offend some folks, but if a person of an age who no longer has kids at home, and maybe is divorced/single, thinks they can make tiny life permanent, and they move, but are also paying over $1000 a year for a storage unit for all the things they or a family member 'might need' and/or that are sentimental to them ... They haven't really gone tiny. They still have emotional or mental umbilical cords to material stuff. And while that IS their choice, that's not downsizing or simplifying, and it is definitely not the 'tiny' life philosophy.
Donna Jean M. - Very well said. I'm 72 and living with my husband in our 988 sq. ft. farm cottage with a full basement. We each owned a house so it is packed! If I ever ended up alone, this house would be too much for me. At my age I'm not keen on a roommate, so a 26' tiny house should work for me. I would make sure it had an air exchanger. I also would want an outside shed and a deck, but no rented storage unit. If I had the tiny house built for both RV and HOUSE rating, I could either park it somewhere... or bring it into a mobile home park or camp ground. My main issue would be letting go of my kitchen gadgets!
I would need a greenhouse and a storage shed for sure. Also I love tile floors bc I have dogs, cats and bunnies. I think just knowing I wasn’t spending 400$ on my electric bill when I’m only in one room of my house would make me so happy. I just want to be out with nature and no nasty neighbors.
This was real and honest. You know the pros a n d the cons of living tiny. And can tell us everything about that. And it is a funny video as well. I like that.
When I go tiny, I will be using sleeping bags instead of sheets and bed covers, for the sole purpose, not to make a bed. I have taken my camping experiences and paid attention. Great Video!
jasonisstupid _ .....Mmmmm.....I don’t know. Reminds me of the time when my sister was staying in this old cabin in the desert here in Arizona. My brother was sleeping in a bed up in the rafters just below the roof......and a mountain lion started pawing at the cracks in the roof just a few feet above him. I’ve had things running across my roof in the night too. So consequently, I don’t feel very warm and fuzzy about opening a skylight above me while I sleep. Lol!
Im very glad you made this video. My dream is to someday live in a tiny home. I am a minimalist and a clean freak so most of the problems you outlined are all things I could absolutely live with. This was very reassuring!
I'm not judging u. Thanks for finally making a video about the down side of tiny living. They don't tell all of this on Hgtv or diy t.v.. I applaud your honesty. Thanks again.
I watched one of the tiny house shows and this couple had three kids (under the age of 10, can't imagine that will like that in the teen years), another on the way, two dogs plus a cat and wanted a tiny house. I would have asked them what they were smoking. Those people I would judge. A single person or couple not so much.
It's funny because I've always known I'm not a tiny house person but watching this I realize it's not as bad as I thought. I figured most of this stuff would be challenging. It's great to hear it from someone who's living it. And I wasn't judging you. Well actually I judge you as brave and adventurous. Maybe one day I'll get a tiny house. 😊
I lived in a tiny house for seven years but don’t anymore. I miss it. I miss it a lot. I didn’t own the property I was on which was very problematic and ultimately ended tiny house life for me. Your criticisms were spot on, I watched your video and thought yup, check, yup, check, yup, check. For me the positives outweigh the negatives as far as the lifestyle goes by a significant margin. The main hurtle to me is land ownership and associated legalities. I had to exist in a grey area world on the down low. Local government and really any government land use agency needs to grow a heart and realize that people need options opened up to them in situations that make sense. Obviously it would be inappropriate for me to buy a lot in some traditional housing area and plop my tiny house in the middle of it. Rural areas in some situations are different. Any way I’m starting to rant, nuff said. Great video and great points!
"If you're going to be different, If you are going to live alternatively, you best be prepared for some scrutiny"- Best line from your vlog... RESPECT!!
You nailed it, thank you! I have little money/ resources, am living illegally on someone's property, have to pay for storage to accommodate the tools i live by. Everything you mentioned is spot on! I've been here 3 months, winter is cold and sloppy in here, and here's another cool fact: the wooden tent does not accommodate being sick, or old. Having flu/ covid in here is nightmarish, claustrophobic, too hot and dry in the loft, and the "tub" fits legs or torso, but not both. Not to mention cabin fever when you can't leave the box for a week... My realization is that all those people bragging up their tiny boxes have actual homes to live in, and the box is their vainglorious attempt to be seen as some eco warrior, but just serves as a temporary overnight or a "vacation" to visit once in awhile. Those who actually live in these wooden tents actually understand "minimalism". That doesn't make it easy or enjoyable much of the time.
I never thought tiny housing was a good idea! But thanks so much for sharing. U r adorable and very brave btw cause there is no way on God's green earth I would have a compost toilet 😊
My plan in life: Buy tiny house when I am younger with my partner to save money. Save money. When I'm ready to start a family, buy a bigger house. Rent out tiny house. Profit.
I watched this two or three years ago, and was really impressed by your honesty then. Watching it this second time, has really helped me understand that I am probably not cut out for tiny house living, even though my dog is only a little bitty pug! Thank you for your honesty, great sense of humor, and courage! Really gorgeous scale, cute cute house, and yeah, I understood the dog thing was just for laughs!
I dreamed of one day renting out my 2500 sqft house to some one and build a tiny house in the backyard to live since my hubby and I travel a lot and out of town. After watching this, I realized it’s not my cup of tea and how I glamorized cute little tiny houses as if young girls play dollhouse.
Meredeth Stieglitz I hope you wash them first before putting them on! Who knows if the other person actually washed the clothes before sending them back🙄
Great video! especially for people being naively sold on the "dream of downsizing"... I think a lot of the things you mention, is possible to design around... having a japanese "genkan" would help to keep the dirt contained (except the dog-dirt/hair). For the bed I would design the loft to have a place where I can stand, probably use a fairly light foam mattress and rubber band sheets for it. they fit and stay very snug on the mattress (duvet and pillows can be done downstairs when changing sheets, no need to be an acrobat in the loft). Smell... good ventilation goes a long way (I never actually see tiny homes with proper ventilation, they often just rely on opening windows... I live in a well ventilated 200sq ft flat, no issues whatsoever. But sure, I don't have a dog.) :) In the end, it's much easier downsizing when you're an introvert with a lifestyle free of unnecessary consumption, where you don't have a lot of dinner parties, game nights etc. I usually visit my family, not the other way around (they are very comfortable and stationary), friends, we meet up once in a while, but we usually go out hiking or engage in outdoor activities. if we were to stay here at home, the space is not really an issue for 1-2 people, and we could potentially be 6 people (which has never happened). But yeah, I think people need to look at their lives, what they value and how they want to live.... look critically at those ideals and see if a tiny house fits or would improve their lifestyle, happiness or goals. This video is a great reminder of that.
I’d love to see a TV show where someone living in a tiny house swaps houses with somebody living in a 50,000+ sqft home in Beverly Hills or Miami Beach.
Violent criminals? So if you had a much bigger house, they wouldn't be an issue? You could argue that a bigger house with lots of stuff in it is more of an attraction to them. Unless your giant house has a maze at the entrance so they can't find you as quickly?
I've been watching many gushing uploads on tiny houses over the last week thinking about the same issues but never hearing anyone raise them. Thank you for having the courage to discuss them. 2 other things that concern me: #1 - vulnerability to criminals #2 - how do have a tiny house with kids? I'm sure if you're on land you own or better yet your parents' land (which is where most are) this is not an issue. But I just can't see having more than a baby and toddler maximum in a traveling tiny house. (of course there's always going to be one exceptional couple with 6 kids doing it that everyone will point to and say "seeee!", but for the overwhelming majority of humanity it's just not doable).
Usually when there's an older kid, the loft spaces are fully enclosed with doors. Smart parents give the older kid the larger loft/room, because the whole rest of the house belongs to the parents and all they do is sleep up there.
Tiny house with kids, simply, you get a plot of land and build a storage container home! I've also seen shed homes converted and the people had TWO KIDS
The first one is the most concerning for me, every time I think about having my own tiny house, but some breaking in easily just scares me, specially as a tiny house, most people bulit tons of windows, so it's even scarier.
Strong work! This is honestly and objectively done, I can tell you are making the best of your situation and are giving honest experience feedback! Thank you for taking the time for this!
True, but a vacuum takes about 10-20 times the space a broom needs? I will be moving in an ordinary, yet very small flat soon and even I am thinking: Do I really need a vacuum? Wouldn't just a broom do?
Yeah, plus carpet is a pain too. You spill something and most of it doesn't come out, so it's easier to have a tile or wooden floor or whatever material. You can just wipe the stuff you spilled and spray it with a cleaning substance and there is nothing there.
@ Never_ _salem Oh yes, I totally forgot about hand vacuums. I guess that would work. :) Personally, I would still prefer a broom, but that's not just because of size but because I want to phase down on technology.
Only someone who actually lives in a tiny home would truly understand this video. I live in a 10x20 tiny home( not on wheels) that me and my father built when I was 16 and I still currently live in while attending college. It's perfect for me and I love it most of the time. It's only when my girlfriend or friends come to stay for several days that I realize just how small it really is though and the thought of living here with a wife and kid is completely out of the question. Yes, it has everything you need to live, but it also has a lack of privacy that people take for granted and just don't understand is a built in feature of living in a "normal" home. Couples get annoyed with each other and need space, even if it's just having another room to go to. Maybe if you live in a year-round warm climate and can just go outside for awhile it would be fine, but here in NY where you get 6 months of winter and it can be miserable that really isn't an option. There is a reason most people don't live in a travel trailer, even though they've been around for decades. A tiny home is essentially the same thing just built with better materials. I know people are going to point to couple X,Y or Z and tell me how well it's working out for them because they make a UA-cam video of tiny snapshot of their life and glamorize it. The reality is completely different for most people. Living here and being single is amazing and I find no downside to my tiny home. When you add more than 1 person is when it becomes unthinkable for me unless it's out of absolute necessity. I think it's great as a temporary solution or a place that perhaps allows a couple to get financially more secure, but long term it's a big no thanks you.
You're right. I'm judging you, Jenna. But I'm judging you GOOD! You are AWESOME!! I love your videos, and I love your tiny house. In another life, I would have really enjoyed living in a tiny house and traveling the country. But I'm too old and set in my ways to do that now. Meanwhile, I'll keep living vicariously through you! Peace and love.
If everyone had a limited amount of space and had to deal with it then maybe we as humans could deal with the limited space and resources on our planet. And peace and love to Jenna!!
I swear it never fails!! I'll brush my shih tzu, vacuum the entire floor and I kid you not, as soon as I sit down (if she even waits that long), her little a$$ will shake like crazy!! Fortunately, she's not a shedder like dogs with fur are. But still, it woozes me out!! 😂
I admire your courage to live in a tiny space. I grew up with 4 siblings and part of my life we lived in a war zone, so the whole family had to rather share 1 bedroom or I always had siblings in my room and the home was not very big at all. We moved so much. Just to think about it, I can't even breathe. A part of me likes the tiny house and another part of me is literally suffocating. Congrats to live with the pros and cons and keeping it up!
+Circusboy90210 - Just because this life isn't for you, that doesn't mean you have to be rude to others who chose that life. You also obviously didn't listen to the last part of this video, lol.
nah, more like no food and the risk of getting rapped and killend, soldier in your house mean your house become a target,so do you, and asking them to go out isn't gonna cut it , so you might get killed, if civilian tend to fly away from those, it's for some reason, more like sucking big time kind of deal(nice shitposting if that what was intended)
For special occasions there’s rent the runway. You can rent and outfit then return through the postal service. It’s really good clothes and you don’t have keep it. Also they dry clean everything once it’s returned.
Thank you for your transparency regarding tiny homes. It is always better to make an informed decision. She is now married and has a child and moved out of her TH for the reasons mentioned.
I live in a country where 90% plus toilets cannot cope with toilet paper as we have not mains sewage, so we have to have a notice on each loo wall. Asking people to put papers into the bin placed at the side ALSO we have a notice that say "if it's yellow, then let it mellow. If its brown, then wash it down" What with this and the fact that loo paper has to go into a bin by the side of the loo which we have to empty frequently, otherwise there is a pong!!!. I also forgot, we frequently have our water rationed.
@@dianapeek6936 Pee eventually ruins toilets. You CAN flush with grey water, like from a fishtank or after dishwashing. You might never get the stains out. You COULD use a portable urinal (even for women) and put it a jar bottle. Thin it with dump water and get rid of it. If it's thinned out, it won't hurt plants or anything. It's sterile, so you don't have to worry about that. Can use a rag for pee. It's more effective than TP if there's a shortage. It dries easier. Can easily rinse out. If you were very desperate for water, you could drink pee. Military teaches that if you're stuck on the ocean (can't drink salt water). Can also pee on a bar rag in a fire (Cocoanut Grove). Lol true story.
You were wrong! I HONESTLY did NOT JUDGE you! I really appreciated your brutal honesty! I wish that more people would have come clean with the reality of living tiny! You are young and single and it seemed perfect for you, but I understand what you mean about the downsides of "tiny homes"! I am 59 now and moved from a 3 bedroom home to a bedroom in my son's home! Mostly because of health problems and I could no longer take care of a large home not to mention the yard. I am however really going bananas living in someone else's home! His home and he and girlfriend and her 2 children had lived here for 10 yrs (her 2 girls are on their own now and they are engaged) and it is time for a mother-in-law home for me! I am considering a tiny house? So again! I was not and am not judging you... I can not do a loft bed like you so I am looking at a shed type tiny home with a full sized set of stairs, no ladder for me! More of a regular size bathroom without the full sized tub, just a shower, regular toilet and vanity sink! Thank you for your honesty! You seem like a very sweet young lady I wish ALL of the BEST for you in your LIFE ahead of you...
I use rental services like Rent The Runway for fancy dress occasions so I can look amazing and not have to store the dress afterwards! Thanks for this informative video
1. You're always cleaning because it gets dirty quickly. Everything from outside gets dragged through the tiny house, including snow and mud. --The design I want has an entrance through the bathroom, so you can leave the muddy clothes and shoes in there. I'll just have to put up with the other chores. 2. Explaining to people how to use a composting toilet. Yeah, that will be awkward. 3. Making the bed. -- I'm trying to think of a solution to this one. I'm considering using a roll-up bed, like that family who live in a school bus that looks like a pirate ship from the inside. I'm not sure that it would be very comfortable though. It's basically like sleeping on top of a thick comforter on the floor. 4. Smells -- Don't have a pet, don't wear perfume. I'll deal with the food smells. It's a fair trade-off. 5. Very little space for guests. -- I typically invite less than 5 people throughout the entire year. I spend time with people outside my home, not inside. 6. No space to grow. -- I see that as a positive. It will force me to live the type of lifestyle that I believe in. The lack of space will keep me simple, honest, clutter-free, and more eco-friendly. 7. Limited by the weight that you can put on the trailer. Yeah, that will be annoying. 8. Very little closet space. -- I'm working on getting both drawers and a hanging closet in my tiny home, so that I have spaces that accommodate all types of clothing. However, in terms of HOW MUCH space, my feelings are similar to those expressed in number 6. 9.Parking and Insurance Legalities Yesss, I'm very worried about that. THANK YOU so much for writing articles about those. I'll be sure to read them. THANK YOU for making this video! It's so important for us to know what we're getting ourselves into before we take this leap. YOU'RE AWESOME! 10. Other people will judge you. -- I'm an American Muslim woman who wears long black abayas most days and covers her head with a headscarf every day. I grew up learning not to care about people judging me. Absolutely 0 problems there.
My finnish relative who is living in america has a "tiny house" too, and she and her husband built a set of outside shoecleaner that has 3 broomheads fixated on wall, on which they can clean all the mud and snow that has come across their journey. They only keep the cleaning kit on kitchen above shelves when they have washed it well with either lakewater or such.
Hiya Sara I’m living in Japan in a little (not tiny, just little) house that I am still building so I might have some hints for you. Two little Japanese efficiencies. Genkan and Futon. The genkan is a small area inside the entrance where you can continue to wear your shoes, but beyond the genkan you cannot wear your shoes. The best way to establish this is to have a little step up after the genkan. You could potentially store a couple of shoes underneath the floor surrounding the genkan, and I also recommend having coat hooks (fold outs maybe?) on the genkan wall so you can hang wet weather gear and not get the rest of your house wet. Futon. The traditional style of bedding here in Japan. It doesn’t have to be the paper thin, you can get a nice thick comfortable futon, the only real difference is that you don’t leave a futon out 24/7. The whole point is that you fold up the futon when you’re not sleeping on it. Traditionally in Japan people fold their futons into 3 and store them away in a closet during the day, but the whole point with tiny houses is being space efficient and making sure that everything is multi purpose, so using a folded futon as your sofa seems like a pretty good idea to me. Good luck with everything!
Go ahead get it off your chest... then breath and realized what you have.......all of this stuff is something you should of thought about before you built it or purchased it or be open to learning new things and enjoying your environment and going with it....are you a millennium..lol...just kidding
Especially when people have a small child and the kid's bedroom is the size of a broom closet. What happens when they get older and bigger and wants friends over? No room to invite people over.
@museack I watched a show about tiny homes a few years ago, and some of the people had a child or two. But even for one child the houses are too small. As a kid I lived in apartments that were small and it drove my mom, grandma, and I crazy. There wasn't much privacy, and one year I was sick most of the summer as my grandma had the AC on at sixty degrees all day as she was heat sensitive. But in our case a tiny apartment was all we could afford.
Judging you? No, actually I found myself respecting you a lot for doing this expose. No, i'm THANKING you. Cuz tiny living is attractive for its own merits. Well now I know better
The only reason to judge is the complaining about clothes. Friggin you have tons more money than someone with a mcmansion just change out your whole wardrobe every month or so.
You have to judge,; its's the only way to make a decision. It' refraining from condemning, the I can't know what its like to be somebody else. At best I can guess.
Thanks! Thanks! and more Thanks! I am so glad you pointed out the concerns of living in a tiny house. I was considering, but thanks to you it’s not a main living I would love. Maybe a second home, but the hassle to be Insured. I really appreciate you. No judgment. Very informative. Thanks. 😊
Bravo ! Your honesty is commendable . I think the idea is far sweeter than the reality . Having lived in a tiny home in my teens ( with 4 others in our family ) I can only say that I got down on my knees in prayer to get away from it !!!! The place was very cute , but would have been better suited to a very short term occupancy , ideally a week or two at most . I'm aware that many people would be grateful to have any roof over their heads , but it's not for the faint hearted , that's for sure . Best wishes to all 🕊
A nice, honest video. Tiny living fascinates me, but that’s as far as I take it. Couldn’t deal with all that, but I commend those who are up to the challenge. Great content!
Jess B this is my exact thoughts too! I would love to have one for vacation type stuff or have considered building a "brew house" for hubby homebrew hobby but i just don't exactly know if we'll actually be able to keep it at our next locale due to weird parking rules at different places we may live due to his military career. I am considering it hard though. Seems like a good way to keep from losing his designated space for that hobby every time we move.
I really truly appreciate this video. I wish someone would start a TV series on the afterlife of living tiny so we can see how ppl really enjoy or don’t enjoy living tiny. They people who kept their tiny homes and the ones who didn’t. All the important truths
Larger homes also have downsides as well, some are the exact opposite of what she said: more space to clean, holding onto a bride's maid dress that you will NEVER wear again, spending too much on frivolous items without a second thought. I swear I need to tell people how to use my toilet when they come over, please, don't leave the seat up, wipe the seat off (gross, I don't pee on your seat), turn the fan on (mostly from little boys but still, require instructions). My point is, nothing is without it's down side, I need to help my 6 year old make his bunk bed, and can't stand it. In a tiny house I would never make a loft bed daily, I can't stand making those bunk beds, it gives me chest pains just thinking about it!
I lived in a grand caravan for a couple of years and loved it. It took about 10 minutes each day to organize it and clean it. Now I spend hours every day at my house cleaning, repairing, washing, vacuuming, yardwork etc. I'm thinking about going back to my van.
@@jmcast3195 i have 3 kids. No pets. It takes about 2 or 3 hours to clean all the dishes and wipes counters and appliances and clean the kitchen floor. Then another 2 hours to clean the rest of the house. I usually do one bathroom every other day.
@@jmcast3195 not every day is the same. I try to mop every room once a week plus some days i have laundry or i have to clean out the fridge or the kids just spilled alot that day. Mopping 7 rooms plus the hallway every week is annoying. I would love a smaller home someday.
Excellent video. Thank you for being real and sharing with us. Every video I’ve ever seen regarding tiny homes has made it seem like everything was perfect and wonderful. Thank you for sharing the realities of living in a tiny home. Well done.
Taylor Van Buskirk -- I totally get it it might not be for you, we're all so different right! Just keep in mind Jenna is being realistic to help others to make the right decision when it comes to living tiny, but she is not saying it's all bad or that it doesn't have a lot of positive aspects. Watch her other videos ;)
Because I'm not adamant about it. I love the idea of a tiny house, but I'm a senior who can't go up and down in a loft to sleep. I would need a downstairs bedroom. Everything is just too small. If they could add just 100 sq feet more, than I think it's more practical.
I like the idea of them for a vacation home. I would think living in one everyday would get old after a while. I would like a vacation tiny home in a beautiful location...but with a downstairs bedroom. No loft sleeping for me. It's too impractical when you have to get up 3-4 times a night to go to the bathroom. LOL!
Thank you so much for making this video. My sister and I are considering tiny houses and you have bought up some very important flaws. I can see myself right now. (3 cats & a pup)😂🤣😘
Thank you for being so candid and honest. You may have saved me. My husband passed a year ago and I am alone with a home on 2 acres. I was seriously thinking of getting a tiny home. Thank you again. Life Saver. Good Luck. Hope you can find happiness. Beverly
Guess you have to experience it to know for sure. As a minimalist and loner it appeals to me a lot and none of the down sides matter. Makes more sense than being caught up in a rat race, never actually "living". Sharing the so called "discomforts" with a like minded individual would be ideal. To me its...freedom, peace and tranquillity of the heart, mind and soul.
By the way, I LOVE MY DOG. She's my baby. I won't be getting rid of her, despite my complaining about the hair and smells. And, yes, I put her outside for the sake of a laugh for the video. But she was let back in moments later with pets and treats.
Tiny House Giant Journey Ha ha! The look on your dog's face after being put outside.
Lol it’s sad you even have to explain this since people get so triggered over everything
Tiny House Giant Journey I love my dog too, have people been telling you to get rid of her! Whats her name? and is it hard to find laundromats every place you go? Love from Australia !
Tiny House Giant Journey that's good to hear!
Great info

I think nobody is full, if you want too much space, ok pay 400 thousand. I don't need too much, i know i won't stay here forever!
He had a lot going on in his life and right when he was about to get to it, the treasurer of that HOA got her son out to mow my friend's yard because on the ring video she was heard complaining that "I just can't take it anymore"
It's like, your business, becomes their business in an HOA.
I don’t even know 4 people, i think this will work perfectly
Out of four people I still speak to, only one of them I speak to on a daily basis, and that's my partner. Therefore, I won't have anyone else over, which would work out.
I'm the 3rd one commenting..so now we have 4 people 😬
I know a lot of people but don't really invite them over my house.
I don't even like four people I love my dogs !
I thought I was the only one 😄
I watch a tiny house show on tv and they rarely ever talk about the negatives. It was nice to see someone talking about reality, for a change. 🙂
It looks like a living hell.
At least she was honest about living in a tiny house. First time I heard that. More people should be like her. Most people act like it is so ''GREAT'' living this way.
Hello Willie, how are you doing?
Despite all the things she listed, I’ll bet she’d tell you that overall it’s still great. No living situation is going to be perfect.
For some people it is great to live that way. For some it doesn't work. Dunno why we need to assume some people are just acting like it's great.
It's because those people are "content creators" so they need to keep people interested in their contents which mostly highlight their great life style,
So they can get more views and get paid from sponsorships.
This is an honest video: tiny house is not for everybody. Everything has its advantages and limitations.
I agree. The people who wax lyrical about tiny houses are the ones living in big houses. They wouldn't even want to move to a medium sized house. Often the tiny houses are shown with lots of land around it with an outdoor toilet.
She should put a sign on the door "DUE TO THE SIZE OF THIS TINY HOUSE, FARTING IS RESTRICTED TO OUTDOOR AREAS ONLY"

I'm in Victoria, BC and I seriously looked at getting a tiny house a few years ago, but none of the municipalities in BC will allow them. Gripe to your representatives LOUDLY. Get groups together.
It's greed. They want more property tax. Duh. Lol
Thanks for your honesty about small house living. I am back to plan B - a Castle in the Swiss Alps.

What about just an apartment though or room share...I worry that so many people are buying tiny homes and trailers and eventually all that crap is going to the dump! Not very green even if its a green trailer.
*Even before you said it, I knew tiny houses have some negative side living in it, thanks for your honesty!*
Yes. And I think she still left out something. It is a car, not a house, so the value will drop.... See: Last Week Tonight's relatively current episode about so called 'mobile homes' (yes, those are not the same, but the overall problem is the same.).
i lived in a small caravan, i came home from work , made supper, few beers.............it looked like a bomb site ! but... happy days!!
@All Day Son calm down dude. I know you're depressed and angry at your poor life choices but that isn't anybody else's fault. Also no one is asking you to move into one. The government isn't forcing you. You live wherever you want. A flat, a mansion, a gutter, hey, it's your choice!

Have you ever worried that someone will steal your home?
Interesting question.
Funny question but good question
We build tiny houses, and we get asked that now and then. Usually our clients plan to keep their THOW in one spot for a couple of years, and are not planning to drive around with it like an RV. (In fact, if Jenna was able to talk about it I'm sure she would agree that these tiny houses can go through engines and transmissions if you have anything less than a 1 ton diesel truck). So if these are staying put for over a year then we typically raise them off the wheels onto concrete blocks and they won't be going anywhere. If they are staying on the wheels, we provide wheel locks that make them impossible to tow.
Or getting in a car accident while traveling. There goes your house and your car
Or break in? May not be too secure.
Just a thought.. 😟
I loved your whole presentation, being thoughtful, humorous, lighthearted yet serious, informative and so gracefully done. Bravo! and Thank you for such a realistic understanding of what it's like for you.

I would like to have a loft in a tiny home but I would want to be able to stand up in it -- not crawl on my hands and knees in my own bedroom.
Also, there are more expensive trailers (uncommon, too) that allow a few more inches which means a few more inches can be used in loft.

100% true.
Same thing I was telling my Sister yesterday when we were talking about these videos; we’re most of the time in one room, at least I am and venture to bathroom and kitchen at certain times during the day.
Hello Donna, how are you doing?
Donna I like what you are saying, I would add having a thankful attitude, can actually cause us to consider what really do we need.
I also would want an
outside shed and a deck, but no rented storage unit.

I'm genuinely curious about the instructions on how to use your toilet 😂

I was not really interested in the topic, but the quality of your video pulled me in and I watched the whole thing.
I thought living in a tiny would be great because of all the videos I've seen, Thank you for your video and being REAL!!!
I never thought tiny housing was a good idea! But thanks so much for sharing. U r adorable and very brave btw cause there is no way on God's green earth I would have a compost toilet 😊

Hi Julie how are you?
I dreamed of one day renting out my 2500 sqft house to some one and build a tiny house in the backyard to live since my hubby and I travel a lot and out of town. After watching this, I realized it’s not my cup of tea and how I glamorized cute little tiny houses as if young girls play dollhouse.

Well said!
I love that you are up front with the challenges of living tiny. I love all of your videos.
I’d love to see a TV show where someone living in a tiny house swaps houses with somebody living in a 50,000+ sqft home in Beverly Hills or Miami Beach.

Captain Obvious Damn, you’re hella stupid. Look up “sminem” in Google, genius.
Sminem That was the fucking joke man

Captain Obvious Well, I don't hear any laughter.
Things that concern me about tiny houses: hurricanes, tornadoes, violent criminals, insanity ect.
A Leopard ll tank instead of a car/truck would solve the criminal Problem 👌
Violent criminals...wasn't going there but, yeah. I worry about them, regardless.
2 other things that concern me:
#1 - vulnerability to criminals
#2 - how do have a tiny house with kids?
@@sasitashrestha8890 you can always build a brick and cement tiny house that isn't on a trailer.

Hi Melissa how are you?
I would recommend not using a broom but a small vacuum instead. easy and cleans better
Lisa - or a swiffer
True, but a vacuum takes about 10-20 times the space a broom needs?
I will be moving in an ordinary, yet very small flat soon and even I am thinking: Do I really need a vacuum? Wouldn't just a broom do?
Yeah, plus carpet is a pain too. You spill something and most of it doesn't come out, so it's easier to have a tile or wooden floor or whatever material. You can just wipe the stuff you spilled and spray it with a cleaning substance and there is nothing there.
Weighs to much
@ Never_ _salem
Oh yes, I totally forgot about hand vacuums. I guess that would work. :)
Personally, I would still prefer a broom, but that's not just because of size but because I want to phase down on technology.
This is all true.
You're right. I'm judging you, Jenna. But I'm judging you GOOD! You are AWESOME!! I love your videos, and I love your tiny house. Hi Monica how are you?
Not all tiny houses are on trailers. That means it can hooked up to plumbing and have a real toilet.
Most tiny homes are on trailers and are hooked up to city sewer. I have seen toliets that are either or. Being on a trailer has nothing to do with it.

4. Smells
-- Don't have a pet, don't wear perfume.
9.Parking and Insurance Legalities
Yesss, I'm very worried about that.
Hiya Sara
I’m living in Japan in a little (not tiny, just little) house that I am still building so I might have some hints for you.

@museack I watched a show about tiny homes a few years ago, and some of the people had a child or two. But even for one child the houses are too small. As a kid I lived in apartments that were small and it drove my mom, grandma, and I crazy. Having lived in a tiny home in my teens ( with 4 others in our family ) I can only say that I got down on my knees in prayer to get away from it !!!! The place was very cute , but would have been better suited to a very short term occupancy , ideally a week or two at most .
Vicky B yes. the point is, the tiny houses have *more* downsides.

@Taylor: Very odd comment. Why would you even watch this type of video if you are so adamant about it?
Because I'm not adamant about it. I love the idea of a tiny house, but I'm a senior who can't go up and down in a loft to sleep. I would need a downstairs bedroom. Everything is just too small. If they could add just 100 sq feet more, than I think it's more practical.

Makes more sense than being caught up in a rat race, never actually "living". Sharing the so called "discomforts" with a like minded individual would be ideal. To me its...freedom, peace and tranquillity of the heart, mind and soul.
You should do it! :)
@@void-xt8pw slight glitch holding me back...'the ideal like minded individual' :(.
Im with you there!!
Wise Rubina, you've said it all... tell them...
