A Simple Hack for Learning the Modes of the Melodic Minor

  • In this video, I show you a simple "trick" to help learn the patterns of the melodic minor. Basically, if you think of the A melodic minor scale as an A major scale (i.e. Ionian mode) with a flat 3rd, you can take all the regular modal patterns and flatten one note and you get the modes of the melodic minor! Pretty mind blowing stuff, eh?
    Hence we have:
    A Ionian b3'
    B Dorian b2
    C Phrygian b1 (but remember to start on c)
    D Lydian b7 (i.e. Lydian Dominant)
    E Mixolydian b6
    F Aeolian b5
    G Locrian b4

    Errata: at 9.25 I called it Phrygian b6 when it should have been Mixolydian b6. Otherwise, it should be okay.
