Thank you! We've got herbaceous peonies that wander the property, and it'll be much easier to transplant them now that I know the depth to plant them. :)
Well, I'm taking the plunge and planting my peony in the ground , out of it's container. Hate the idea that it could take 3 year's to bloom as I have been waiting that long for it to bloom in the pot. Peonies take me back 50 years to my grandparents garden. I love them.
I have a question I planted a peony and I only got one little stem and that’s all it’s done do you think it will grow more or what can I do to help it grow.
Peonies do take quite a long time to establish. It's worth watching our video to check whether you planted it at the right depth as this can have quite an impact on their growth.
My mother offered me bare roots of peonies for my garden, however I was wondering, if I plant them now (mid-May), do I have a chance to see them grow and perhaps get some flowers this summer or is it too late? I'm at loss at what to do with them in all honesty
Hello. You should definitely plant them asap. They should certainly grow this summer however, I wouldn't expect to see flowers until next year as it does take them a good year or more to settle in.
I have my peony in a good sized pot, when I bought it, she came with 3 big pink flores, this was approx. 7 years. They haven't flowered since then. The leaves come well, good growth, healthy, but that's all. Last year I took the rizoma out of the container, changed the soil, cleaned the bulb and replanted them not as deep as they were. I water them as been told, but seldom fertilized them. Anyway, how can I make them flower? It's been so many years and nothing happened. Please advice me what could be wrong and what shall I do to make them flower. Thank you so much for your comments, Cristina
Peonies are notorious for this! They may take years to settle into a spot and produce a decent display. If you have now planted them at the right depth then this is a good starting point. Unfortunately you may need to wait until they re-establish, but I would certainly recommend applying a slow release fertilizer in spring to feed them through the growing season.
You can certainly pot it up and grow it on until it is larger. It shouldn't be necessary to grow it on indoors though. You can stand the pot outside in the garden.
The variety, growing conditions and age of the rootstock can also have an influence. They will get there eventually, but if it is taking a while then you may prefer to try again with a fresh plant.
You can easily improve the soil by adding plenty of organic matter to it. If it is extremely heavy then mix in some horticultural grit as well. You can grow them in a pot but they always do much better in the ground.
I planted 3 plants 3 years ago, only one has had blooms, I am guessing the other are two deep, can I uproot them and replant them? will they grow or die?
Can't find ANY place that shows how to tell or plant bareroot peony that doesn't have any eyes. In that case, how do you tell the root from where the eye would be? I have 6 bareroot plants and not ONE of them has an eye on it. Not even a hint of one. can't tell the root from the eye part (since there isn't any) don't know if I'm planting them upside-down or not.................
Thank you. I am waiting for 5 different Tree Ponies, a collection of red, white, yellow, purple and pink plants. The soil is good and ground is fertile with earth worms. The sun is good also. The will get up to 6 hours of sun per day. I need to know how much distance to plant in between each plant? Great video by the way and you are as beautiful as a flower.
Planting distances really depend on the type that you are planting. Herbaceous peonies will only need to be 45cm apart but tree peonies will need much more space depending on which variety you are planting.
Ah good point! I ususally do wear gloves in the garden but for the purpose of videos its often easier to see whats going on if I leave my gloves off. Would always recommend that people use gloves!!
Why would she have to wear gloves? Her garden and can do as she pleases without her justifying herself to you. Now run along and to find something else to moan about. Interfering 🤡 Oh big crime I don't wear gloves, muppet
The main issue would be providing sufficient light. I imagine if you grew one in a bright conservatory then this might work, but they will always do best outdoors. The best way to find out is to give it a go!
Leaf curl seems to be quite a common thing with peonies early in the season. It is often related to changing weather conditions and generally rights itself as the season progresses.
Hi Samsgarden, generally home gardeners shouldn't need to add lime to their soil. Peonies will happily grow in slightly acid, neutral or slightly alkaline soil. It is assumed that people gardening on very acid or alkaline soils will amend it accordingly or choose plants suitable for their soil type, kind regards.
Hello. It does depend upon the variety. Some do have very heavy flowers especially after rainfall. If you find that your flowers are flopping over then provide a stem support to hold them upright such as this ... www.thompson-morgan.com/p/peony-herbaceous-plant-frame/KA9263TM
The way they bend over and look heavy is one of my favorite parts. But mine do not all go to the ground. It's more of a cascade effect, with some standing up, some leaning over, and some all the way down. Just a matter of taste, I guess.
Thanks so much for the info, I’ve just bought my first peony and was unsure how to begin. I’m so excited to see my sarah bernhardt blooming.
I'm going to follow your good advice and I hope I will get to enjoy my peonies for years to come, thank you !!!!

Ty this was a big help to us planting them for first time
I bought a bulbs and I'm so excited planting my peony and hopefully to see the pretty flowers.
Best of luck!
Thanks for this, bought a potted peony waiting for its new home. 😊
Great information - thank you :-) I've just planted my bulbs, hopefully I've done it right.

Me encantan las Peonias. Gracias saludos de Chile.
beautiful flower and nice planning to grow peonies video!
Just the information I needed! 👩🏽🌾🌸
Excellent content brief but good information. really helpful. Cheers
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you, this video was very helpful. :)
Wow beautiful vedio superb information for peony flower thank you 🙏🙏👌👌👏👏
Mine are just a root. There are no buds on it so would it be best to start them in a pot first and then plant them?
It might be a good idea if you are concerned about them. Make sure that you don't plant them too deeply though.
Fantastic video thank you

I received a mail-order Peony plant about 3 inches in height. Can I plant it indoors before I plant it outside in the ground?

Mine is herbaceous and year three. Planted correctly, humus rich soil, and grows back healthy each year. No flower buds as yet though.
The variety, growing conditions and age of the rootstock can also have an influence. They will get there eventually, but if it is taking a while then you may prefer to try again with a fresh plant.

Thank you 🌺
I have a root peony. My garden soil is very heavy with clay - can I improve the soil or am I better off planting it in a large pot?
You can easily improve the soil by adding plenty of organic matter to it. If it is extremely heavy then mix in some horticultural grit as well. You can grow them in a pot but they always do much better in the ground.
@@thompsonmorgan is horticulture grit the same as sand .
Can you plant these in container?
Yes you can!
I planted 3 plants 3 years ago, only one has had blooms, I am guessing the other are two deep, can I uproot them and replant them? will they grow or die?
Hello. It's quite possible that they are too deep. You can certainly move them but be prepared they may then take another year to settle in properly.

pekoe46 In that case I would hedge my bets and plant them on their sides.
Awesome! Thank you!
Great advice thanks
Is it okay to plant them in the shade? Or do they like sun
Sun or semi-shade is best.
Thompson & Morgan TV thank you

You can plant these in the same way as you plant herbaceous Peonies :)

Can herbaceous peonies grow indoors in pots?
The main issue would be providing sufficient light. I imagine if you grew one in a bright conservatory then this might work, but they will always do best outdoors. The best way to find out is to give it a go!
My bulbs have sprouted but the leaves are looking like they are dry and curled up. What could be wrong?
Leaf curl seems to be quite a common thing with peonies early in the season. It is often related to changing weather conditions and generally rights itself as the season progresses.
Hello, can you show the name of black soil planting peony in the video?
I can't quite remember its name but I think it may have been Peony 'Karl Rosenfield'
Ah yes, my favorout flower
Why doesn't anybody mention lime?
Hi Samsgarden, generally home gardeners shouldn't need to add lime to their soil. Peonies will happily grow in slightly acid, neutral or slightly alkaline soil. It is assumed that people gardening on very acid or alkaline soils will amend it accordingly or choose plants suitable for their soil type, kind regards.
Samsgarden I have very acidic soil and gorgeous peonies. Totally unnecessary amendment. Spend your money on a good compost instead.
...... I think I planted 6 or 7 upside down 🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️🤦🏼♀️
Oh dear! If you only just planted them then you could dig them up and replant them properly.
Can peonies regrow their red sprouts if it has been accidentally stepped on by a person with boots?
Yes, they should produce more growth in time.
