    Beautifully done! In my opinion, you just made one of the most well explained and enjoyable to watch pro mist filter videos. Totally agree on the point of using the filter in terms of black and white photos as the flat hazy and blooming effect of the filter looks better in color photos.
    The video itself is so well made, it gave a beautiful nice & chill vibe. The shots were splendid as well. 🤍

    I have one in my bronica rf645... the 1/8 is more to my taste and think more realistic than the 1/4 which difuses things a bit too much. with the 1/8, you can liturally leave it on there all the time and the differences are more subtle and less agresssive on the contrast and shapness.. I totally agree with your statement regarding black and white film as well, although I never really shoot black and white these days so makes even more sense to leave my 1/8 on all the time.
    1 last point, the smaller the format, the higher the effect on each frame, so 35mm shooters, be careful, as 1/4 is really over the top!

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  3 роки тому

      Interesting point, thanks for sharing! I have not tried any of the other filter strengths yet unfortunately, but the results I saw online with the 1/8 strength looked very nice. I only wanted to buy one filter so the 1/4 strength seemed like the sweet spot for my needs, but that results in being a bit more selective when to use it

    This is crazy. I literally shot two rolls to test this very hypothesis. I found that sometimes it reduced micro contrast a bit too much. This video was beautifully shot as well by the way.

    A very comprehensive review of the mist filters! Completely agree and I think this is doubly true for film photography. I shoot mainly digital and having the mist on black and white isn't too bad since you can fix it in post and saves the hassle of screwing and unscrewing the filter off the lens. I just love it for the subtle bloom it gives to certain lighting situations

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  3 роки тому

      Thank you, Jay! That’s a good point, I see why people might leave it on and deal with it in post, especially on digital it makes sense. For me personally editing is more annoying than dealing with filters - but that is of course very personal :)

    The best video on the use of these filters I have found, and I have watched hours and hours! Thank you! I think I am going to go with Moment Cinebloom as it has all of the benefits of the Tiffen, but also retains the sharpness of the shape of the light source too

    Really well performed experiment. As a starburst fan (and normally shoot at 𝑓/11-16 at night) I'm not into how it renders light sources at night. But for daytime scenes, especially high contrast and portrait, it definitely turned out really nice (and your cat is SO CUTE!)

      Thank you! :) So far I have usually shot night scenes with small apertures as well, so I totally get you! But I am still indecisive if I like the starbursts or not, for me it really depends on the mood I want to create. @@KarinMajoka Indeed the answer isn't so "black and white" (ha). For the colour shot of the house, I prefer with the filter, but for bnw without. Then rainbow road I prefer colour without the filter.
      For the shots of Momo I prefer the colour with filter but that's 90% because of derp face.

    I have used a pro mist filter for years! I used it mainly with my Yashica Mat 124. One time someone asked me: is that a Pro Mist Filter? I asked: what's a pro mist filter bruh? I don't use filters on my Yashica MAT. Turns out that the taking lens had and still has haze inside. I did like the effect though and as the lens on my Bronica doesn't have haze I had to buy a pro mist filter which was only a few months ago...so I guess I actually haven't used pro mist filters for years, just regular pro haze filters that sometimes come built-in with an old camera.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  3 роки тому

      Haha, the build-in-hazy-lens-pro-mist-filter surely comes cheaper though! That's also the beauty of analog cameras, that they can come with their own little quirks that sometimes even positively surprise us. Guess you got hooked on the mist filter look then? :)

    Karin, this is interesting & thoughtful, as usual. Love it when you smile. The effect of this filter on some of your color & panchro film shots--with respect to points of light--has almost the same effect when you did some shots with that expensive Cinestill 800 film. I think it is a matter of taste or judgment because some photographers might like a slightly flared point of light. Keep smiling and keep up your great work.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment, Norman! That's also what I thought, it really has some similarities with the halation of Cinestill film. A combination of Cinestill and this filter might be worth a try I guess :)

    • @normandong4479
      @normandong4479 3 роки тому

      @@KarinMajoka Karin. When I look at night shots where there are distinct sources of light, I feel there is some mystery. Where is this? What does it mean? What happened here? If there is halation, it could be a distraction from that. A lone street light in a misty night can evoke a mystery, a feeling about a place. Might try shooting a clear, unfiltered night and a clear filtered night. May sense a swing in mood. All the best. 😉😉

    Pro mist is very heavy handed. Gxace and myself use glimmerglass 1 filters. He just did an amazing video on it where he's a hologram lol. I personally also use black satin filters which are comparable to Schneider Hollywood black magic filters which are considered to be one of the best in the industry. You will still get nice halation but it will not obscure the shape of the lamps and will not remove contrast in fine details even half as much. They are superior in every way except for how far the halation stretches across the frame at the same rated strength.

    There is a conspicuous lack of cars falling off that Rainbow Road, not very authentic at all!
    Anyways, when I bought an RB67 about two years ago, the lens that came with it was pretty hazy and it was sort of a built in diffusion filter. Not being able to control the effect was annoying, though, so I sold that copy, but I think a diffusion filter is a great tool for when you want things to look kind of glamorous or nostalgic. Sure beats smearing vaseline on the front element...

    Great Video... Now I would be curious how BPM filter vs PM filter on film would compare...
    The urge of wanting to use these on digital video I think doesn't come from wanting it to look like "film" but rather wanting it to look like "classic lenses", right? Glowy lenses like the older Leica R, Cooke, anamorphics ...
    I recently got my first package of Silbersalz back, shot with a Voigtlander 40mm Nokton and was SHOCKED how perfect the scans look... So I'm curious experimenting with a BPM filter...
    Have you tried different BPM intensities?

    If you look carefully around 5:40 there is an odd cat vanishing effect with this filter. Since obviously this does not occur indoors as evidenced by the graceful modelling of Momo, I conclude that you have a naturally occurring cat induced wormhole.

    Something I’ve ran into with shooting with a pro mist filter at night is ghosting. I’m not 100% sure if it’s just the combination of the lenses I’m using with the filter, but it seems like when I’m shooting harsh light sources (such as neon signs) pretty close to wide open (f5.6 and above) the light source will ghost on my image.

    • @KarinMajoka
      @KarinMajoka  3 роки тому +1

      As far as I am aware of, ghosting might happen with every type of filter since the extra amount of glass can cause reflections within the gap between the filter and the lens. But it's surely interesting to hear that in your case this doe not seem to be the case when stopping down the lens.

      Definitely stronger. You could buy filters with a mild cross-hatch pattern that must be Pro-Mist’s granddaddy, lol. If you’ve ever watched classic movies where the women were noticeably softer in close-up, you’ve seen nylons/Vaselin at work.

    Unrelated question: how do you feel about your name since it's been co-opted by meme culture? I'm assuming it's pronounced the same as Karen? Unless I'm wrong, you've never really formally introduced yourself in your videos. Of course there's always the possibility that memes don't hold that much weight in Germany where if I'm not mistaken is where you're from?

      Very valid question actually haha! I am a meme-head myself, so this meme hit me very hard, but generally speaking meme culture is not as big here in Germany I would say. At least I have not heard any "Karen" related jokes here yet. But my name is also pronounced in a very German way which does not sound too much like "Karen".
