Hi Karin, thanks again for the visit and the great time we had. For me also it was a great pleasure spending time with someone who has so much passion and dedication for all different kinds of projects (especially filming and telling stories ;-)
Once again: thank you Steffen for the great weekend, it was my pleasure! Hope this was not our last meeting. :)
As a person who fixes everything from locks to electrical issues in people’s homes all day for my business. Seeing this kind of video of people fixing and restoring something is very enjoyable.
Thank you so much for your comment, I appreciate it! I also really like the sustainability aspect of fixing things.
Tiny screws!!! Your friend has nimble fingers. That modified Polaroid is a beast! Nice work with it. As an old commercial "lab rat," I found that darkroom rather quaint. We had video color analyzers and densitometers to nail accurate color, and our auto processors were plumbed to 1100 gallon tanks of RA-4 chemicals, so everything was fresh and speedy results were easy. Retired, now, I convert my negatives to digital with Negative Lab Pro, Lightroom Classic, a digital camera, an Essential Film Holder, and a Viltrox light panel. Good color (and B&W) results are far easier than with my old home darkroom equipment. I get the look of film, but with digital precision and no smells. The files make great gicleé inkjet prints.
I really liked the border that this camera gave, the images seemed more organic and less clinical!
This is the dream for my community darkroom setup ... I even have a Besseler roller transport processor if I can get it running. 😍
I knew you might enjoy this one. ;) It truly is a dream for a community darkroom - hope all is going well so far with yours!
Those photos look amazing. I love the black border
Great show! Thank you. 🙂
Thank you! 🙌🏽
Watching Steffen in his darkroom reminds me of my friend Oliver Rolf who ran Platinum in Hamburg. Oliver passed away unexpectedly in 2021, leaving behind a wife and children, and many friends in the analog photography scene. His printing work was absolute world class, he was a great friend and amazing teacher. Maybe some of the viewers in the comments section around Hamburg (and beyond) remember Oliver. Ruhe in Frieden, Oliver.
I laughed at "Schrödinger's shutter".
Wow, I really enjoy all your videos but this one sent me back in time: as soon as I got to time marker 6:55 I thought, "wait a minute, is that Wilhelmshaven, Suedstrand?" (I was born and grew up in that city but left many decades ago). And then the confirmation came when you visited the Kaiser Wilhelm Bruecke (my Dad worked there loooong time ago). I share your passion for film photography, especially using antique or vintage cameras, everything from 35mm to 8x10. My problem is finding enough time to lock myself in my old darkroom and complete some 'real' photo projects. I hope that will change within the next few months when I retire. But, then again, there is always time to 'soak up' all the good analog film videos on youtube.
Good luck with your analog endeavors. Greetings from Texas.
So the Land Camera lens is equivalent to a 43.6mm f/3.56 on FF so yeah, probably not the camera you can get a wide depth of field on, but very cool to see how well it can actually do as a street photography camera.
Different but interesting video ! I like !
It's a bit out of line to my usual videos, but I am glad you like it nonetheless. :)
Ahh nice you found someone to repair the lenses.
Yes, I am very grateful Steffen helped me out with this! :)
That must have been an awesome adventure. Thanks for sharing!
What a cool & interesting camera. Glad you got the in lens shutter fixed. Great pics there!
Schrodingers shutter lol
what a beast of a camera haha but honestly not to bulky considering it's 4x5
Totally! It's bulky and not bulky at the same time... Schrödinger's 4x5 camera. ;)
So cool!
Glad you liked it! :)
Very Cool!! :)
Last year I bought an Ensign Selfie 6X9 camera with a sticky shutter. The application of a few drops of the Zippo lighter fluid sorted the problem out.
Impressive, that little things can sometimes have a big effect.
Oh would love for you to try the “Texas Leica” - the Fuji g690
That's actually where the inspiration for the name of this beast here came from. There is a Texas Leica, so why not also a Frankenstein's one haha. Would love to try it one day!
@@KarinMajoka if you really want, tell me! I have a GW690 and a GSW680 III. I am quite often in Münster. 😁
The negatives from the Frankenleica might look really great as cyanotypes. The chemicals are cheap, readily available, and you don't need either a darkroom or an enlarger. You might want to extend the experiment by toning the prints in tea, coffee or wine. 😊
I have never done Cyanotypes myself, but you are totally right - it looks like just the right camera for that. :)
with the "Frankenstein Leica" (Polaroid 110 A/B) the artifacts are most likely caused by pinholes in the bellows. I get similar artifacts, and I found pinholes. But I can't figure out how to replace the bellows because they are riveted on.
My friend who repairs cameras says half of the time he spends fixing other people's repairs.
That Poloroid has a great lens. You would have loved Poloroid positive/negative film.Alas gone.
Sticky grease is really the biggest problem for old shutters and cameras. I think the worst one are probably old Voigtländers as they used an awful green grease that can even sometimes make parts hard to separate.
Steffen also told me about some cases where the grease got almost as hard as cement. Really crazy! So CLA-ing lenses is really essential to give them a good, long life.
What are your thoughts on switch to leica summicron from the voigtlander?
6:03 did the shutter not work that 2nd time?
Your MIC is TOO LOW.
No, no, no. Real camera technician will never do what he did at ua-cam.com/video/k3Xx-i_-Ywk/v-deo.html
As said in the video: It's a perfect way to quick check if the shutter is not working due to failing lubricants or if there is really something wrong inside (which it was this time) ...but of cause you are right: flushing a shutter is no repair ;-)
To keep the video somewhat compact I had to trim it down quite a bit. But Steffen explained in detail that a proper shutter service with taking everything apart takes several hours and that we will try to do a "quick fix" first.
