Hi guys I hope you enjoy this freehand tutorial “hack “. My students loved doing this on class so I thought I’d share the method with you. As you get better and better at breaking down shapes you won’t need the plexiglass but it’s very helpful at the beginning of your art journey. I think you're a wonderful instructor. You broke down a complex still life into manageable parts and made it seem simple. It fun watching you add details. I fret about being perfect. I am going to try to follow your lead and keep it fun.
Are you applying chalk/pastel for highlights? Do you then spray fixative? Then you glaze with oil paint? I'd like I e to see you finish the still life with glazes. That would be nice to see. Thank you. I enjoy our lessons.
“Well, don’t show anybody the photo” 😂😂😂😂😂 Marion, you’ve shown me doors I never knew existed and have handed me the keys. A huge part of my artistic journey is thanks to you. I am forever grateful. 😊 Thank you for another key to yet another door I never thought I’d be able to open. You RAWK! 😎
Marion, I have always said that I cannot draw. What you just showed me in the fantastic video is how to do exactly that! I’ve said it many times in comments and many more times to family and friends; I am in awe of your work and your teaching methods. I continually learn from you. I cannot thank you enough. You truly are one of my favorite artists.
I remember learning a blocking technique similar to this in high school. I had forgot about it. I haven’t painted it 30 years. I am retired now and am trying to paint again. So hard to remember everything. Thank you so much for the reminder. I’ve never seen the under painting technique. I did watch the comparison video. You have given me so much more confidence. I don’t feel like it’s going to take me forever to recall what to do again. Thank you again.
Wonderful tutorial 😍 teaches how to see objects in simple shapes! This method takes away my fear of free hand drawings and brings so much joy to do my paintings 😍 thanks Marion for all the learnings I have got from your fabulous courses , Huge huge fan 💕💕🌹
Thank you so much yes that is the idea behind the lesson is to remove the fear and show how easy it is to adjust things with the underpainting method too. Thank you for your comments.
Wow, this is such a great tutorial that I am watching it again without skipping any adds to support the creator. Thank you for all the great work. Also could you please make more acrylic painting tutorials? Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Twelve years ago my teacher, Cindy Shute, taught us the value of under painting. If I return to the under painting technique my work will take a big leap forward towards the Old Master result.
After years of not painting in oils, I just recently got back into it. Your videos are extremely helpful and I enjoy your explicit directions. You offer great advice on what tools to use and your lovely accent adds charm to your videos as well.
Amazing tutorial! I learned a whole lot! At first I wondered why you were going through all that trouble making that rough line draft before painting, but……, it now makes so much sense! Thank you for this great tutorial! I totally appreciated it and definitely needed it! ❤️
Thank you for always sharing ways to improve our art. You have a talent for simplifying instructions to overcome our hesitancy to take on something we may somewhat fear. On top of all that your skills are admirable and I am lucky to have found you as an instructor and friend!!!
Thanx a lot. Your videos are amazing, easy to understand nd very beneficial for me. Your art work is beautiful. God bless you with more success in life
Wonderful tutorial, it's been a while since I have done any painting. But this has inspired me to get started again, big thanks to Marion for another great tutorial xx
I have used the grid method previously, I tend to be a bit too exact, so this really gives me a great technique for a looser, more organic look. Once again, a wonderful, clear & informative tutorial. Love your technique & style of instruction! I am a total beginner, so I really appreciate the simplicity & clarity of your tutorials, thanks!
Thank you so much YES you are absolutely right the grid method is so tedious & very tight. I much prefer this looser approach & when I’ve ran classes students work was varied but each beautiful in their own right (again don’t show the photo because we are making a painting not a photo right?). Glad you enjoyed it ☺️ I appreciate your comments
I love this tutorial and will definitely be giving it a try. I dabbled with the technique at the completion of the portrait course and feel more confident after viewing this one. As always clear, concise and conveys the belief that anyone can do it. Thank you Marion.
May just have a go at this technique sometime with some environmentally friendly oils/products. You make it looks so easy when I know it takes years of practice to do properly. Love to see a flat painting emerge into a masterpiece like yours, it's inspiring Marion. Thanks again!
Thank you for this method. ( I will have to adapt the actual medium as I only paint in acrylics because of allergies or sensitivities to oils and accompanying fumes.) Your method makes more sense to me than the method I was taught.
You are so welcome! You could do the drawing in charcoal that way you can see daily erase. Then use a fixative to set it once you are happy and switch to your acrylic once the drawing is established.
This is trippy, man. I was trying to help two students on Tuesday see basic shapes to help with their freehand drawing, and I slipped printed photos into clear sheets and had them trace basic shapes with a sharpie. Then, this video drops.
Wow, what a great video it just simplified it in such a way that made it so easy to understand. Your skill makes it look very easy it’s quite impressive actually. thank you very much
I can't believe that something so intricate can be so easy to draw--and the lines don't even have to be completely straight. There goes the theory that if you can't draw a straight line, you can't be an artist. I think that this will make a huge different in my work. Thank you so much for your tutorials... they are extremely helpful.
Fantastic video, but please tell me, can I apply also this to the acril colors?( Acril colors dry so fast) thank you so much for any information you can give me. 👍🤗
If you haven’t got that tool you use to measure with, what would be an alternative tool you might already have at home? I am getting great value from your lessons thank you

Nice video. Kindly make a video on Golden section & composition.
Ill add to my list ☺️. Thank you for your comments
This is sooo great! Was that a pastel pencil you used for the white?
It was a typist eraser Erase the oil to reveal the white underneath
Fantastic video, but please tell me, can I apply also this to the acril colors?( Acril colors dry so fast) thank you so much for any information you can give me. 👍🤗
The erasing doesn’t work as well with acrylic because of the drying time. Which is why I use oil for this reductive technique
Do you let the under paint dry before continuing with the colors
Yes. 👍🏻
So Nice
Thank you ☺️
Madam that was good idea I have to try but acrylics using am always
You can’t erase in acrylic so easily but perhaps you could use white.
If you haven’t got that tool you use to measure with, what would be an alternative tool you might already have at home? I am getting great value from your lessons thank you
You could use a compass or a ruler anything you can compare with. Glad you enjoyed the lesson
Great video. What kind of marker is that and how did you erase it? Thanks. Just subscribed!
It’s a dry wipe marker with a sponge on the top. That’s how I erase it. Glad you enjoyed it
love your videos! love your voice and accent :)
Thanks so much ☺️
doing a underpainting now with black, white and gray - black canvas white and gray oils
