Yeah I was totally surprised, since I've seen Desperado, which was all about the sexiness on Banderas. In this movie Depp totally stole the whole show. Didn't like the film so much, but it was all about Johnny's performance.
Not even Edward Scissorhands Wonka, Gilbert or Captain Jack Sparrow I guess it depends on everyone taste if you enjoy only watching gangster and spies with no exception to fantasy adventure worlds then you would think that.
Depp is a great supporting actor. In lead roles he has the Mars Bar effect. A Mars bar is delicious, caramel chewy. Brilliant. Eat nothing but Mars Bars for 90 minutes and it gets tiresome. Johnny is a Mars bar. Have him as the side character who draws you in, but not a lead. Pirates of the Caribbean for example. Vs say Sleepy Hollow or Dark Shadows. I love Johnny, we all do, but he's a Han Solo to Luke Skywalker. The show's about Luke. Han kinda elevates it. I mean imagine if they made a movie about Han Solo. Heh. It'd be crazy and shit right...
Johnny is a charcter actor. He does lampoon well. As a lead outside that context? It falls flat. He'd play well in a Thor movie against Chris Hemsworth for example. But leading the film? No. Sweeny Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate factory, the aforementioned Dark Shadows? No. He led Ed Wood well, but he had an ensamble cast that made it work. Johnny is definitely support. If they did another biopic of a band, Johnny is the enigmatic bassist, not the frontman.
“No, I’ll shoot the cook; my car’s parked out back anyway.” The delivery of that line absolutely kills me every time I watch this movie lol. The way he states it like a little aside, like it’s just a matter of course...hilarious.
I remember watching this movie and thinking, Johnny Depp character is a good guy but then i remember he shot this cook for cooking him the best Puerco Pibil he has ever had.
This movie has the great Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, the underrated Mickey rourke, danny Trejo, eva mendes, even Enrique Iglesias and the legendary willem fucking dafoe. But no one, steal the show like Johnny deep in once upon a time in mexico😎 He is just excellent. Great acting, character & presence in this brilliant movie
Indeed. The Movie was an All Star Cast. I can’t imagine today how much money to get A and B list Actors and Actresses on board in a film. The Production will be really expensive.
I actually thought he was joking about shooting the cook to use it as an example of his work but then when it happens im like dying here cause i was like he actually did it hahaha
That "Wayment, he was Serious?" feeling reminds me of one of the stories in "Cat's Eye". Guy wants to quit smoking, so he joins a group- unbeknownst to him- started by a Mob boss. I won't spoil it for you, but he has some trouble sticking to the rules... aand it gets pretty merciless.
Once Upon a Time in Mexico 2: the son of the pork chef grows up swearing revenge and seeking out the man who gunned down his father, serving slow-roasted pork to all who gets in his way.
I just made puerco pibil per Robert Rodriguez's recipe, put it in a ziploc bag to marinate overnight, and I'll serve it tomorrow for my parents. I hope nobody kills me over it tomorrow.
So cool. So badass. So debonair. He knows what he's doing and he takes no shit. "I'm gonna go shoot the cook, and if you try to stop me, I'll kill you too." Even without his eyes, he's still a dead shot. Masterpiece. Specimen.
for those of you wondering Banderas spat out the food because he didnt want Depp to murder the chef. It almost made the final cut but was funnier to keep the murder in.
Interestingly, this movie was filmed first of the two. It sat on the shelf for about a year before being released the same year (2003) as the first Pirates. So his savvy line here weirdly predates Jack Sparrow’s catchphrase. Depp might’ve just always liked the word and improved it into both characters (and it just caught on with Jack since Pirates was the bigger hit and spawned a franchise)
Ahh that same repetitive "Little known fact, so-and-so character really did this scene" joke. Glad it wasn't what they were saying XD I hate the internets thing about throwing everything on repeat for the rest of eternity.
Hands down my favorite scene in movie history. The way he finished his meal, paid his check then shoots the cook speaks poetry to me beyond universal understanding. it’s like this movie looked through my eyes & figured out my personality.
When I first saw this scene I had an Interesting take on this, I thought the cook worked for the cartel and attempted to poison him and Sands knew it by the taste. So he had "El" taste it, and "El" could obviously also tell it was poisoned so he spit it out. Thus confirming to Sands that there was something wrong with the food, so Sands finishes the meal after taking an anecdote to prevent the poison (unseen), but kills the "cartel hired" cook for the offense. Does that make you feel better?
They made something incredibly evil look good. Just like shooting the cook they wont allow anything good to happen in the country but everyone just laps it up because the part is played and delivered by a well known actor.
i remember when i first saw this movie back as a teenager, he made that food sound so good i wanted to try it lol. Then he kills the cook, which was just hilariously unexpected.
It was meant to look very low budget. This is acfaually the third installment in Director Robert Rodriguez "Mexico"Trilogy. The 1st was El Mariachi, 2nd was Desprerado. Readoning behind the low budget look was because El Mariachi was made with only $7,500.
How bad the movie is? This is right up there with all of the spaghetti westerns ever made and will stand alongside them in history. Perfectly crafted for it's intentions.
According to the DVD commentary this film was shot before POTC but I believe it was not released or shown in theaters until after POTC.....many people noticed Johnny's "savvy" in the film and figured it was a nod to Captain Jack but was actually just a coincidence that both characters used the term in their dialogue.
Can you imagine if there was an afterlife and you went over your life in full only to realize that you died because you were TOO GOOD at making FOOD, that would be INSANE!!!!..
Don't know about that, but he filmed his part in only 8 days. He didn't want to leave, so he asked the director if there was anything else he could do, hence him playing the priest in the confessional

Shooting a perfect cook - the phrase that immediately comes to my mind is "This is why we can't have nice things"
This is probably my FAVORITE Johnny Depp performance and not even close to one of his most recognized.
One day Johnny Depp will win an Oscar.
Yeah I was totally surprised, since I've seen Desperado, which was all about the sexiness on Banderas. In this movie Depp totally stole the whole show. Didn't like the film so much, but it was all about Johnny's performance.
ditto, it's peak character acting and a unique character at that
So many layers
Not even Edward Scissorhands Wonka, Gilbert or Captain Jack Sparrow I guess it depends on everyone taste if you enjoy only watching gangster and spies with no exception to fantasy adventure worlds then you would think that.
In.my.opinion Johnny Depp stole the show in this movie very gifted actor...😀
In every movie yeah 😁

@@joegrimes9232 interesting analysis. Never thought of him this way. What's sure he was brilliant in this film.
Oh don't get me wrong yeah he was perfectly cast
Johnny Depp is such an adorable, snarky, smartass in this movie.
“No, I’ll shoot the cook; my car’s parked out back anyway.”
The delivery of that line absolutely kills me every time I watch this movie lol. The way he states it like a little aside, like it’s just a matter of course...hilarious.
One of his best performances, and hardly anyone knows about it. The goofiness of this movie makes it great
I remember watching this movie and thinking, Johnny Depp character is a good guy but then i remember he shot this cook for cooking him the best Puerco Pibil he has ever had.
pcmacro he was also a CIA agent who was trying to incite a coup.
Also shot the waitress who spilled coffee on his fake arm lol, so the eye part was justified
@@humble-l2x Nope.. The justified part is where only two eyes are left instead
Best in the country.
Thank you I was wondering what he was eating

You cannot have the sacred Dafoe name in a comment and then talk about someone ELSE stealing the show. It's blasphemy.
@@mistermonologue2442 except when the someone else is Johnny Depp & he does, in fact, steal the whole show lol
To deliver a line without swearing & have it be the most impactful dialogue in a movie full of swearing? Now that's acting
yep. great acting. power grace & restraint
I had a deep thought as I watched this at exactly 420. The Marachi spit out a pork in an attempt to save the cook. To show it wasn't the best.
it's not necessarily the best, just the best it's ever been for Sands. We don't know exactly where the bar is
El tried to save the cook, by spitting out the food. Or maybe the puerco pibil really was not good.
Or he spit it out just to spite Sands
he eat it all 2:15 so.. i think he likes it
Or maybe he just doesn't like the taste.
I came here to leave this comment.∆∆∆
There's many ways to interpret the moment but this one falls in line with him being a hero.
It could be a bunch of reasons marcy he might not like pork serveral.
I actually thought he was joking about shooting the cook to use it as an example of his work but then when it happens im like dying here cause i was like he actually did it hahaha
Lmao

This seems silly but only for a moment. I'd produce it. Don't announce it as a sequel either just let it reveal itself too lol
@Moowalks I am with you if you need any help
if sidney wasnt already dead, or if anything its not much of a challenge since hes blind
Damn get this to the directors and producers asap!😀😂
Guitar case full of roaster pork

Fuck me I should have been there, you got lucky
Only if it’s TOO good...
Jeremy Knaack nah he got killed over it. R. I. P
You’ll only die if you added the tequila.
"You want me to shoot the cook?"
"No I'll shoot the cook, my car's out back anyway."
That pair of lines never fails to make me laugh
"You want me to shoot the cook?"
"No, I'll shoot the cook. My car's out back anyway." -Depp
Johnny Depp is a true professional
The blood on the camera is perfect
Love this scene. I don't think I would've shot the cook but maybe I just don't have my priorities in order.
my favourite johnny depp movie of all time
I see a flaw in Sand's plan to shoot the cook... How the heck does he know that's the right cook?! lol
The guy with the biggest hat.
Only cook in the kitchen
The hat. Just like a doctors coat length tells you their position.
Because it's probably the only cook / chef. He had the chefs high hat on .The others were only kitchen hands .
~I love it when Johnny Depp swears in this movie above all the others.~
When Depp was in the car with the Mexican kid and told the cab driver he was a “Fuck Mook” because he couldn’t see was hilarious asf 😂😂
@@Tokenblackguru101 lol I've always loved that line too, along with the cabbie's retort "well then listen to it, fucker"

JD - Such a terrific actor
Johnny that was the sous chef!
😂😂😭😭😭
Great performance! He stole the show
for those of you wondering Banderas spat out the food because he didnt want Depp to murder the chef. It almost made the final cut but was funnier to keep the murder in.
to sands it was delicious, but to real Mexicans it was terrible. that was my takeaway.
Savvy.
He must’ve immediately went to Mexico after shooting Curse of The Black Pearl because he probably improvised Savvy.
Interestingly, this movie was filmed first of the two. It sat on the shelf for about a year before being released the same year (2003) as the first Pirates.

~My favorite villian Johnny Depp played.~
He was more anti hero in the movie
That’s got to be the greatest pirate I’ve ever seen
The truth is johnny stole the film he's so talented when i watch this in the first i thought johnny was main character of the movie.
Maryosep, Yiel. Nakita na naman kita HAHAHA
I love this movie. My actors Johnny depp, Antonio balderas, and Danny trejo.
This movie is the best...Johnny is amazing
This the most handsome version of johnny deph
Oh man those boost mobile back in those days. XD
Its amazing that he did this the same year that pirates came out.
I wish Johnny Depp would go back to doing movies where he's not a quirky cartoon, he's too gifted
One of depp's finest yet underrated roles as sands imo
Didn't think he would actually shoot the cook. I though this was one big figure of speech
Thats what everyone thought and thats why it was a suprise that he actually did that.
"I restore the balance to this country..."

Action packed movie, but also with a lot of fun and a great cast 👏
johnny actually looks native american in this clip
I believe he's got a sliver of it in his heritage if I'm not mistaken.

Johnny Depp also played "Salome" in this and it was brilliant

OMG he is such a good actor, I believed every word he said. He's sexy as well. In love with this man!
Marcia Pze Which one?
Marcia Pze suck him up then
Would you love him if you was poor and ugly and not famous?
I thought the text was gonna be a joke like, "Johnny Depp improvised a lot if his scenes and is wanted in Mexico for the murder of a fine cook." 😆
Ahh that same repetitive
"Little known fact, so-and-so character really did this scene" joke. Glad it wasn't what they were saying XD I hate the internets thing about throwing everything on repeat for the rest of eternity.

There should have been a movie based solely on Depp's character.
Only ever saw this clip in the movie surprised me the low quality during that follow shot
Usually in America people leave a good tip if their served good food, but in Mexico it’s a different story.
God bless u all. 💘 this movie. Johnny and Antonio amazing
Johnny Depp is da best.🤙🏻😉😁
From the kitchen staffs perspective:
>Man walks in, gun drawn

Damn. Johnny depp sexi AF in this clip.
Mr Depp stole every scene he was in. "Are you a Mexi-Can or a Mexi-Can't?". I mean who TF says that.
This scene and the dialog given by depp is so captivating you almost forget how bad the movie is... then you see the camera work
It was meant to look very low budget. This is acfaually the third installment in Director Robert Rodriguez "Mexico"Trilogy. The 1st was El Mariachi, 2nd was Desprerado. Readoning behind the low budget look was because El Mariachi was made with only $7,500.

Just whenever you thought it was a metaphor, he actually shoots the cook.
That is the best plate of puerco pibil if I ever seen one ☝️

Johnny Depp is full in the role
This sh*t had me rolling 😂

Johnny Depp 10/10 acting. Also, great example of American foreign policy, in a nutshell (I think).
El Mariachi tried to save the cook by spitting out the Pibil

Fun fact, that was actually the sous chef.

So if it's really bad does he shoot the cook too since he's trying to keep the balance
I read an article a few years back where Johnny Depp admits to being drunk throughout this whole movie, I wonder if it was tequila?
Don't know about that, but he filmed his part in only 8 days. He didn't want to leave, so he asked the director if there was anything else he could do, hence him playing the priest in the confessional
Why does he immediately remind me of Jack Sparrow when I hear these lines? 🤣
