When Jelly Roll performs this song live he will often sing the chorus a cappella, no music just him and the audience singing in unison. The album that this song is from, Ballad of the Broken, is in my opinion the best album of any genre to come out in at least 20 years. Every single track on it is pure gold. Similar to the album rock of the 70's it has a theme which is about addiction and the struggle for redemption. The albumn is more Rock than Country and I believe it was released on the Rock charts. I too consider Jelly to be one of the best, if not the best, singer of this generation. I'm glad to see that he will be opening up for one of the headliners at the Stagecoach Festival next year but in truth he should be the headliner. I'd hate to be the one that will follow that performance. And as much as I am a fan of Jelly Roll as a singer he's still my favorite rapper and has been long before he focused on his singing. That man can do some wicked free styling and make rapping look easy which he considers to be easy. If you get a chance to listen to the song 'Cowboys' with him and his best friend Struggle Jennings, you should. It is a take on the song Momma Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys' recorded by Struggle's grandfather, Waylon Jennings. I hope Jelly does his song Yippie Kai Yay at Stagecoach next year. 🎶Yippie Kai yay, Yippie Kai yo, the weed made high, the liquor made me low🎶
This was the first song I ever heard from this guy. Love his unique voice. His song/video for 'Need a favor' is heart wrenchingly powerful too. He says he knows who his fans are & who he is writing for.
His mom struggled with addiction and mental health while he was growing up. Jelly Roll is proof that a rough childhood and struggles that include addiction and prison time don't have to determine what you can accomplish in your life. I agree that Stapleton and Jelly Roll are both phenomenal. And that Jelly Roll has some more tools and other things that you mentioned Keith.
One of the things I love about JR, is the person behind the music. He is as blown away by the reception as those that hear him are blown away by the voice. If you ever get a chance to watch him with an established artist, Craig Morgan, Wynona Judd, Lainey Wilson.. so on.. he is the most humble and giving of men. Good music will get me to listen. Good people make me a fan. I am a fan of Jelly Roll.
Thank you guys I feel like shit because I just had back surgery 30 minutes ago. Y'all's reaction made my day better seriously thank you. I appreciate the visual of Keith unplugging Jelly rolls stuff
In my opinion Jelly Roll is the closest thing to true Outlaw Country to hit the mainstream media in a long time. While I'd say he is a better Vocalist than any of them, I think Jelly Roll would fit in perfectly with a lot of the OG Outlaw Country Artists such as the guys in The Highwaymen, Merle Haggard, Hank Williams Jr., Etc. There have been lots of incredible Artists who sing "Outlaw Country," but over the years the sub genre of Outlaw Country has changed and shifted and lost a lot of its popularity. Jelly Roll has taken it back to where it started and like it did back in the day, it has drawn the attention of the masses.
Back in their day, the belting with enough power to cause tectonic plates to shift wasn't really a thing. He'd blast them off the stage with power and volume. Not to belittle their skills, because they're outstanding. But imagine him belting into a chorus with those guys. I'm not even sure you'd hear them, and if you did, you'd forget they were on stage. This is such a different style. - Keith
@@BourbonCountryReacts I'd agree to a certain extent. Yes he would blow them away volume wise, but musically and lyrically I see a lot of similarities in their songs. Another thing to consider is all of the OGs I mentioned had their own sounds. If you look at The Highwaymen for example Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings had very different voices, but between their song arrangements, and Chips Moman their producer they found a way to make everyone sound great together. Just my thoughts. I can totally see where you're coming from and what you're saying. I guess where I'm coming from is, at least for me, when I listen to the OGs and when I listen to Jelly Roll they both stir up similar feelings and touch something deep inside me.
@@BourbonCountryReacts It may be true in a sense that most of those guys were rather low key as far as vocal volume goes. All of them except for one, Hank Jr. Ain't nobody blowing ole Bocephus off of no stage. He'd be up there belting out a tune as loud and onry as can be, grabbing and playing every instrument on stage, and all while being drunk as skunk like he was born to boogie. Also Merle Haggard was himself a real Outlaw in real life he was never a part of the Outlaw Country movement. He never fought the Nashville machine on Music Row and he stayed with Capitol Records his whole career. Not to mention, he never grew his hair all long and shaggy, like the hippies out in San Francisco do.✌
You're not wrong, but I think Tyler Childers would fit in perfectly with the outlaws guys, down to saying what he feels without caring about the consequences. I've only listened to a few Jelly Roll songs, but he's obviously on that level too.
Ok, I loved your reaction and I absolutely agree with you guys. His voice is just amazing. And I really love the lyrics and this song. Thank you for this great reaction.
I didn’t judge, just never knew about Jelly Roll. A die-hard fan of Craig Morgan, I watched the clip of Craig and Jelly at the Grand Ol Opry and cried! Learned Jelly’s redemption story, him being accepted by the Country community and Craig’s love. We need more of this today.
If you ever get the chance to see him concert , do it! It’s amazing at how surprised he is every night with his fans. It’s also amazing to see and read the signs, how his songs have helped people turned their lives around.
I first heard Jelly Roll about 6 months ago when UA-cam recommended him singing Almost Home at The Grand Ole Opry. When I saw the thumbnail I was prepared to get super mad because I knew a guy that looks like that was about to ruin a great song. I was wrong. Jelly Roll proves you can’t judge a book by its cover.
Great video 👍 I love to see and hear what Jelly is doing in his career and also in touching so many people's lives. The things I hear people say about him, along with videos I see of him interacting with fans are incredible to say the least. For me personally, I like his rap music a lot better than I like most of his country, but who really cares? He is a phenomenal artist who can do a lot of different things well. I would encourage you both to look into his music catalog. Whether you like hip hop, RnB/soul, country, or just want to learn about a man with an amazing success story and a great sense of humor/comedy..I don't think you'll regret it. Cheers 🍻
Jelly Roll has become one of my favorites and I avoided listening to his music for a longtime. I even enjoy some of his rap stuff. I really appreciate that he is trying to help people through his music. I would give the edge to Stapleton though because he is always vocally consistent in live performances. I have watched some live performances from Jelly and he doesn't always nail it, but that takes nothing away from his emotion that he puts into every song.
I see what you're saying and partly agree with you. Right now I think you are right, Stapleton is a better more polished performer, and absolute master of his craft. But he has also had more time performing to hone his talent and style. I can't wait to hear Jelly Roll in a few years. I know he has been making music almost as long as Stapleton, but it's only been in the last few years that he has really transitioned to making Country Music. I think Jelly Roll has the potential to grow into one of the greatest Artists of his Generation perhaps ever, but I worry that the music industry could try and change him and in doing so lose part of what makes him so special.
