    Great job Tony as always FYI when you see a card without any indication of the manufacturer it is an OEM piece. Usually you find these inside desktops of a particular brand such as Lenovo, Dell etc. if I were you I would charge more for cards that had an unsuccessful repair attempt previously.

      and 8350mhz on the memory.
      At 99% gpu utilization it only draws 159-160. Before it would run at 170w at 99% gpu utilization when stock and when overclocked it hit 182. I am getting 23 watts lower overclock power draw and 10-12w lower over stock!

    It is a OEM card made for Lenovo, not by Lenovo. Dell (and other OEMs) does similar things, this cards are made extremly cheap and everything that is not needed for pure function is omited (Gamersnexus did a video on Dell cards). Proper cooling is not on the list of priorities. If it dies during the warranty period due to overheating it gets replaced free of charge. If it days a few months later Lenovo is no longer responsible. So I am not surprised by that memory temperatures, it will survive some years even with bad cooling and Lenovo hopes that, if it dies, the customer simply orders his next Lenovo PC instead of replacing the dead GPU. (planned obsolecence)
    That thing looks cheapo, had a cheap chinese set of keyboard, mouse and pad from Amazon for around 40 bucks and it had the same cheap look and felt horrible in my hands. ^^

    • @aaaronmiller100
      @aaaronmiller100 9 місяців тому

      GamersNexus actually didn't throw too much shame on the dell OEM ampere GPUs; they are actually acceptable; just a bit shorter than normal cards to fit inside those alienware cases that they must have dug out of an 80's overstock somewhere...I swear that hinge bullsht was a thing back in the day; now it just deprives the Cpu of any chance of cooling and adds half a pound of metal to their proprietary cases that suck soo soo much. I've been using a dell 3070 for a year no problems whatsoever.

    • @devil5051000
      @devil5051000 9 місяців тому +1

      @@aaaronmiller100 The card tested by Gamersnexus had no memory cooling at all. Just a bit of airflow from the fan but no connection to the heatsink. It will last a few years but then one of the chips will fail. Some of the memory chips were running considerable hotter then other ones (the ones that were not reached by the airflow from the fan).
      That is part of a bigger sceme used by many OEMs. Make the computer so bad it will barely survive the warranty period and if it breaks down after warranty sell overpriced spare parts that are so expensive (of course don´t sell the parts to the consumer but repair the computer directly at Dell by a certified technician, again rising the costs) that there is no way the customer will pay that and instead buys a new computer.
      OEMs field of business is selling new computers, not reparing old ones. Every repaired computer means one sold new computer less.
      That power supply cabinet is a fantastic invention by Dell. It suffocates the CPU so much that it will run close to 100C most of the time while throttling and also increases the chance that the CPU dies after a few years of use. Repair not economically acceptable, better buy a new computer.
      But I wonder if this wil not backfire for the OEM. If I had that sort of experience with a Dell or HP computer I would try another company next. Luckily I build my own PCs since almost 30 years. That way I have control over the parts used and the cooling. And it is not that much more expensive then buying one from Dell & co.

    The thermal paste on the memory frame will degrade soon and it will form an insulation layer, working against cooling when it happens. This is because there seems to be some space in separation from the cooler. Thermal paste is only for when there are flat surfaces touching. The thermal putty idea was the way to go about it.

      Temporary difference. It will wick out and dry up plenty fast allowing the memory to heat up to unsafe conditions. The space between the memory chips and the cooler is is too small for thermal pads but the two parts do not touch each other where thermal paste fills in the microscopic gaps. This is where thermal putty is used, the space is too thin for pads and too wide for paste.

    A simple but stupid question.
    On card that has free memory chip pcb slots... could you literately solder on some extra memory chips or have you got to replace/upgrade the core and other "parts" (capacitors and controllers etc)?
    TLDR: Could you easily upgrade your card? lol

    • @ottokrieg
      @ottokrieg 9 місяців тому

      From what I found on a quick search online: The gpu has a certain number of memory controllers and that has to be 1 to 1 ratio with the number of memory modules. Adding more wouldn't work. The extra slots on the card are just placeholder for a higher tier card (think base model chassis of a car vs a premium model). Similarly, it probably wouldn't make sense to replace existing memory modules that are working fine because you want them to be as close to each other in spec as possible (think the difference in RAM modules on a computer motherboard working in dual channel).

    • @babalonkie

      @@ottokrieg You can easily get same spec chips... so that's not an issue. Also whilst the slots are placeholders... they are infact working connected placeholders (or they simply would not be there on the PCB). Their very existence on the card suggests the card can infact be upgraded. You can always rely on corporations trying to save money themselves via laziness and cutting corners... as a weakness for the public to exploit and do the same.
      My curiosity lies around the fact, could you ultimately self upgrade a card if you know what you are doing and can get the parts.
      How much work is practically irrelevant... i just want to know if it's ultimately possible via confirmation... as the evidence suggests it can be upgraded.

    lol, Lenovo actually has a Vapor Chamber on a 3080 (surprisingly good)
    but
    instead, the vRAM gets total dogshit cooling
    atleast it wasn't too complicated to significantly improve it compared to factory.
    stay classy, Lenovo xD

    Looks like an oem video card out of a pre-built pc. Dell for example makes special form factor cards to fit their weird cases and proprietary sized motherboards. Poor design and cooling solutions. Yup, oem.

      Too expensive. Not good for thick gaps where you need pads or putty. Outperforms everything though, even liquid metal in a lot of real world situations. Don't tell too many people about our secret, lol

    You have debunked the theory about memory temperature on 3080 supposedly being "normal" at 100-110C!

    I think this GPU was part of an external GPU solution as an add-on for the Lenovo laptop series probably using Thunderbolt 3 or 4 or just some workstations and maybe server applications

    Hi, stupid question here. What is thermal party?

  • @PaulHigginbothamSr
    @PaulHigginbothamSr 9 місяців тому

    What one can do is remove half that paste and put copper shims being very careful to not touch any component with the copper. Even putting so much captan tape slightly into the thermal area is ok. You could still drop the temp another 20°.

      He already made a video about copper Sims saying that they are a very bad idea because they cause BGA cracking

      you'd have to replace the midplate that's covering the vRAM now with that. which would help, but isn't suitable for professional use, too risky of the Shims moving around. you could do the lasercut patterned Plates approach, though at a big additional cost to the Customer.
