  • My fourth design for a gramophone / victrola sound box and again for fitting to my HMV 162 gramophone - although the design would work with other gramophones including my home made ones.
    Includes a like for like sound test against my previous sound box.

    I think it would be louder if there wasn't such a large space between the diaphragm and the inside of the reproducer.

      Yes, I think you are right. I was able to build a couple which were better in this respect:

    Sounds like a deeper tone, fuller body 🙂

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  5 років тому

      Thanks :-) Yes the tone is much better than the previous one. There are lots of improvements I can still make to it - which may well make it sound even better. It does need some more volume though.

    I don't know if you can get Yoplait Light yogurt in the 8 packs, but the container is Polystyrene and very thin. (53 mm by 64 mm) oval. They are just right for making crystal headphones if you glue a piezo disk to the back and I'm sure they would make a good soundbox.

      Thanks 😀 👍. Sounds like ideal diaphragm material. I will have to look out for them. I don't know if you saw that I have tried a few different other materials for this:

      Thanks.:-) Yes, it's surprisingly better than the previous design, but also the closest to a 'proper' soundbox design so maybe that is to be expected. The main problem now is the volume. The camcorder compensates I'm sure as it sounds louder on video than in real life.

    thank you so much sir ....what was the needle made of used in this diy

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  17 днів тому +1

      It was a genuine gramophone needle. It is possible to use other things, like sewing needles, but these may damage the record

    Hey’ that sounds amazing :)
    A few questions and one suggestion
    What type of of needle are you using in this video?
    I have a a few sets of sewing machine’s needles in a different diameters. Thinking of using one them. What would you recommend?
    Dose vinyl record’s life get shorter under a diy sewing needle?
    A Suggestion
    Maybe you should try using a plastic bottle as the membrane for the sound box - by tucking a sheet of plastic with staples on some sort of a small wooden ring, than shrink the plastic with heat gun or over your kitchen stove (look for the PETE recycle mark on the bottle-the type that shrink at heat).
    I made a Banjo head out of shrunken bottle plastic. the strings and bridge are seating on that stretched thin plastic and it produce a great loud resonance!
    Thanks from advance
    Eddo :)

      Thanks 😀 👍 and thanks for the suggestion to heat shrink a plastic diaphragm. I may try that. I have also tried 3D printing soundboxes like this one:
      ua-cam.com/video/pw9DoCmvl9s/v-deo.html
      I've tried several types of plastic diaphragms as well as metal ones:
      ua-cam.com/video/XqAlJVpN3ZM/v-deo.html
      In these videos I am using a proper gramophone needle and the records are shellac 78s. The needle is changed for each record. I have built soundboxes which can be used on vinyl using a normal sewing pin, though it does damage the vinyl are should not be used on records you care about:

      There are lots of other videos on my channel which you might find of interest. This playlist covers some of them:

    Ah what happened to the good ol "video response"
    Im nearing finishing a similar project, Im adding an adjustable counter weight on my tone arm, My sound reproducer (box) is too heavy and would annihilate a record groove, I made it from copper and steel.
    Would you like to see it when it's done?

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  5 років тому +1

      Yes, it would be great to see it when it's done. Thanks. Oddly enough, I think my sound boxes are probably too light as they still lack volume. My next plans in this area include making them heavier to see if it helps.

    • @stclairstclair
      @stclairstclair 5 років тому

      @@mrrgstuff , Hey i just fished with my counter weight and it seem like it's going to do it's job well, I can screw and unscrew it to get how ever much balance/pressure placed on the needle, You should try this, i used a temporary one wired on to test.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  5 років тому

      Thanks, yes a counter weight makes good sense. Apparently there were commercial ones for use with fibre needles and if I can find enough info I may make one like that. I have used counterweights in projects using a sound box to play vinyl records as even though they are light, the sound boxes are still too heavy for them.

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  4 роки тому +1

      Interesting to hear that. I had a lot of fun making this one and it works quite well though it could be improved. Certainly needs to be louder. I haven't decided exactly what I will try next, but I do hope to come back to this. Good luck 😀

    It seems you have greatly reduced the distortion on high pitches. Do you know what is causing it?

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  5 років тому

      To be honest I don't know, but this sound box has a proper diaphragm which I'm sure helps. Have you seen my next video? Thanks

      The vibration of the materials cause the distortion in higher or low bass notes, so if the gaskets are falling or the centre of the diaphragm is worn or cracked/ creased. Can cause lot of unpleasant sounds. But remember things wasn’t perfect in them days. Plastic diaphragms seem to perform better than tin ones I think.

      @mrrgstuff  2 роки тому

      I've had quite a lot of success using the clear plastic from a CD case as it is very ridged, though a little thick. I've tried other sorts of plastic and metal too. Aluminium works well when corrugated like in this video:
      ua-cam.com/video/mK1bGhanqf4/v-deo.html
      Thanks 😀 👍

    Have you tried a louder needle? Thicker needle

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  5 років тому

      No, though I do have some and it might help. I have been trying though to do comparisons between the sound boxes so I have kept the needle the same type for all tests. Thanks 😀

    You need to get yourself a Myford lathe so you can do this properly !

    • @mrrgstuff
      @mrrgstuff  3 роки тому

      Well I didn't by a Myford, but I have a mini lathe and have started to make screws and small stuff for soundboxes. I have also made a lot of use of 3D printed parts for my more recent designs:
      ua-cam.com/video/A7qNRg3BS5o/v-deo.html
      I have plans for one which is much more made of metal too, and may well get to the point where I can make a whole one on the lathe! 🤔😉. Thanks 👍😀
