Sorry but everyone who uses Stanley woodworking planes knows the ones from before 1970 are far better than the ones after. Around 1970 profit became more important than quality at Stanley. So much for the message about "integrity, quality and value for the consumer".
You have to go back further than that. Pre WW2 in fact. The stuff from even the 60's isn't great. Stanley brought back the Sweetheart range a few years back (about 2010 I think?) and some of this is excellent - the SW No. 62 low angle jack and the SW smoother are of a very high standard and have a bit of innovation too...
I own a "cordovan" No.5 plane bought in 1970. The plane stayed in the box for 30 years because it was unusable until I read articles on tuning planes. After much work and tuning, it is now my "go to" plane. I agree with your assessment.
