In my country, guache is like a starter medium for beginners. You can get it at every store in little cartboard boxes for pretty cheap. I used guache for every school project in primary school. It’s so much fun to watch videos of people trying guache for the first time, because i grew up with it. :)

A tip to make the Pantone cards more workable with the gouache is to use transparent watercolor ground.

    • @Skunkforge

@@annadownya7754 I think it depends on what you use and how. Watercolor ground is more absorbent so more watered down gouache can be used, whereas gesso I believe is a little bit smoother and not as absorbent for acrylics. I think it’s up to the individual of course but for gouache I personally prefer watercolor ground.

in my experience, it’s much easier to paint with gouache on absorbent paper (like watercolour paper)! switching to a more suitable paper made a HUGE difference when i was learning how to paint with gouache. i would have cried if you told me i had to paint on these cards when i was first starting out

    • @Lacroix999

I don’t see the point in painting on them. They’re super expensive (not sure even what real purpose they serve is besides being like paint swatches) and many of the artists making these cards paint mostly over them anyways not allowing the original color to shine through….which I thought was the purpose of painting one that partial color card-to be that colors palette’s inspiration.

FYI there is a polarizing lens that you can use when filming very shiney things, like these Pantone cards. When you have a glare, and it's hard to get a good shot of what you're painting because of it, you can use this lens that you can turn until your glare goes away. it's very cool! TenHundred did a video on it a few weeks ago.

I absolutely love working with gouache because it's water activated like watercolors but you can build it up so much better like acrylics. I took a color and composition class in college and this was the only medium we were allowed to use. I hated it at first but now it's definitely one of my favorites.

Loved this and how you were able to turn it around! It actually came out super nice and love the light effect on the water droplets! Also another thing if you find gouache to be tricky because of the water control, maybe it could be interesting to try out acryla gouache! It works like gouache with the water property you can dilute it, but also after it dries out it's like acrylic paint and wont reactivate when you add water or paint on top of an existing layer, which can be interesting to paint with when you want more opaque consistency :)!

Gesso is absolutely opaque white. I think transparent watercolor ground will work better for what you're trying to do. As soon as I saw you start this video I worried about how paint would adhere to these. Clearly very slick treated cards. Watercolor and gouache need to be able to absorb into the surface that they are painting on. One. Might be able to paint straight acrylic onto these cards. Although even then I think it would probably peel off. Still love to watch your process though.

I love this video. The painting came out amazingly. Here is what I think: it is a waist to use gouache on these backgrounds. You are just going to have to cover them with Gesso. So I would suggest that you save them for a different painting project or next October or whatever. I would suggest using regular paper that is good for gouache. This is also because I am not sure if it is the same using Gouache on Gesso or if it will make a great difference when you come to actually use Gouache on paper. This was an amazing idea and a fun video. It was great seeing you problem solve your way out of all of your challenges. I am so happy it came together so well. Looking forward to following this series when I can given very big time constraints for the next couple of months. I am just happy hat I got to squeeze this video in.
