    This is a real shunt mod, no just dumping Conductonaut on top of the resistor and shorting it out, like I used to do.

    A desktop GPU has access to stable power, whereas the laptop's Max-Q Dynamic Boost is shifting unused power from the CPU over to the GPU (and back). These setups work best when they find a sort of equilibrium balance between the two massive power draws (GPU and CPU combined). That's why a desktop GPU can almost always out perform the equivalent laptop GPU. And yes you have Max-Q tech in that 2070 even though yours is not the sucky Max-Q variants that were limited to 65w, but Dynamic Boost is actually Max-Q technology too. I think they may have stopped labeling Dynamic Boost as Max-Q later because so many people hated on those power limited variants, but those were supposed to be for ultra thin gaming laptops and not desktop replacement laptops.

    • @siyzerix
      @siyzerix 5 місяців тому

      Well, you can use the IMON tweak to bypass that crappy dynamic boost. Did it to my nitro 5 with the 3070ti 150w and i7 12650h. Now my 3070ti can use the full 150w and the i7 can use as much power as it needs to. With a repaste, propping up and cleaned internals, I can keep temps under control. It performs within 5-10% of the desktop 3070

      @@siyzerix right but most of today's gaming laptops can benefit from undervolting the CPU if possible, and dialing back that CPU does let more power stay on the GPU side.

    • @siyzerix
      @siyzerix 5 місяців тому

      @@bryanwashere5010 Most gaming laptop cpu's can be undervolted. They've artificially been limited so you don't go around improving performance and having control.
      And in CPU + GPU workloads, an intel CPU will eat away power from the GPU due to it using more power than ryzen. Just don't let CPU and GPU share power. My nitro 5 can handle a 50-60w CPU + 150w GPU at once, cooling 200-210w. You can see it on my channel with me testing CP2077

    Since the low resistance. Could stacking introduce a higher resistance because of the increased solderlength? That would mean that te rating of the second resistor is higher. Did you ever test the result with a single 3mohm resistor?

    • @TechModLab
      @TechModLab  2 роки тому

      No, but with a single 4 mOhm resistor and I got roughly 138W TGP. But I think you are not wrong. The solder joints play a role and contribute to the observed non-linear TGPs. Not by 100% but some percent at least.

    Hi mate, long shot but I modified my 0R005 resistors to 0R003 on my MSI GS66 10SF with the 2070 Max Q Refresh 80w, interestingly I now hit Power and Voltage limits shown in GPU-Z and Afterburner without any overclock. I was asked to check the resistance with a multimeter, but the lowest value is 200 so the best reading I could get was 00.5 on my 0R003 resistors. With that said, do you have any idea how I can diagnose whether the resistors themselves or even the soldering is correct? Right now I've literally just ordered a different brand of 0R003 1w 1% 1206 and was just going to try those as I can't think of a way to diagnose.

    • @RetroTechno
      @RetroTechno Рік тому +1

      I'm no expert MrSweet, but you're trying to draw 190 Watts of power (To GPU alone) through those VRM and even with tons of loss what is trying to hit your GPUcore is so way out of spec no doubt that is your issue. Why not go for something way more modest like r004 or less (stacked) like these fine videos show? r003 is just insane for your laptop board to handle and that GS66 thermal capacity would choke fast and thermal throttle your GPU even if your VRM's withstood the temps for a few hours without fusing inside.... your power brick is probably not a 300W+ which you would need by my calculations so ---no way. Nice try but... Scale back would be my advice.

    • @TechModLab
      @TechModLab  Рік тому

      I did not experience it myself, but my guess is that you hit the limits programmed into your GPU's Max-Q vBIOS. It is not a regular vBIOS for the full power range, so it makes sense it is limited in voltage, too. R004 should work better.
      Or you can manage to find a Max-P 115W vBIOS for your vendor, which works. Would be the easiest way, without shunt modding.
      ---
      But as Eric said in his comment, using R004 (4mOhm) should already be close to the healthy limit for the existing VRM design in your laptop. So I would not go for more than 100W or maybe 105W TGP in your case.

      glad you like it :) Well you would do pretty much the same as me. There must be two shunt resistors on your laptop's mainboard too. They are quiet easy to identify. They must be bigger than the other resistors, and can be labeled as "005", "R005" or similar. you can try to track the PCB's traces from the GPU VRM backwards to the shunts.

    Hello I want to ask you for a consultation on this notebook. I was waiting for the update from XMG about ryzen 5000 support on my apex 15, but on the first of November they released a news that they are having serious difficulties with this and the support of ryzen 5000 is highly unlikely. Right now I have ryzen 3600 in mine and its working very good and has a decent thermals. But I want to keep this machine around as much as I could, so if they will not realease a bios support for at least ryzen 5600x I want to know to which cpu I should upgrade? Im looking at 2 options - 3700x and 3900 non-x. Im using my machine for gaming so which one will give me more performance? 3700x has two more cores, but it can just add some more degrees with not that different performance, but 3900 has 12 cores and also 64mb of cache which will be very preferable for games in my opinion. Im sorry for taking your time, but I really need your advice.

    • @TechModLab
      @TechModLab  3 роки тому

      you are right. At the moment there are no positive news about Zen3 support in the 2020 Apex15. But the new Apex15XL (2021 model) will get it afaik.
      Your question for the processor strongly depends on your use scenario. Do you use your processor in ManualOC mode (all-core fixed max clockspeed)? If so then the 3700X would be a better choice because the fewer cores can reach higher clockspeeds than the 12-core 3900.
      If you don't run ManualOC, but the default ControlCenter power modes instead I would still say 3700X. Also keep in mind that the higher core count processors draw more power in idle so your fans will go crazy even in idle, when you do not use ManualOC.
      3700X:
      - 8 cores are enough for gaming
      - cheaper
      - more quiet fans in idle
      - more loud fans under load
      - hotter under load
      3900(X):
      - cache doesn't really matter for games
      - just a few games can make use of 12 cores
      - more loud fans in idle
      - more quieter fans under load
      - cooler under load
      If you are just gaming i think even your 3600 is enough. You will very likely see no higher FPS with a higher core count Zen2 CPU in most games.

    i have a question tho, if you shunt mod a laptop, would you need to change to a better charger? like stock one is 100w, after shunt mod you get somewhere 150w so do i need a 150w charger? i know that it have nothing to do with input wattage, just reduce the resistance coming into the chipset

    • @TechModLab
      @TechModLab  2 роки тому

      You are talking about the power supply unit (PSU), right?
      Yes you probably need a higher rated power supply. Mine in the videos got 230W with a little headroom up to 250W, so it can support up to 140W TGP, 88W CPU, plus 20W extras (SSD, display, and so on). But it's really close to the limit. So I should opt for a higher tier power supply myself.

I will take a read into it :) But my strange results with the lower two shunt configurations are not explainable just from the signal issue. I suspect a wrong shunt resistance/label plays a role there. In worst case it's coming from the original one. But not sure yet. Need to run tests :)
