To find out what happened to the queen (Jessie Buckley of Wild Rose), Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr. of Chaplin, Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes) plunges her head into the aquarium and asks the octopus what it saw. The octopus tells him that the queen fell down after drinking tea. Dolittle takes his head out of the aquarium and asks everyone to leave the room. Then he asks Jip the dog to recognize the poison among those illustrated in a book. He finds the Queen has been poisoned by some kind of nightshade added to her tea, and the only cure is the magical fruit of Eden from a faraway island. Dolittle leaves his lurcher dog Jip and a walking stick named Sticks behind to guard the Queen while he's traveling to find the cure with Tommy (Harry Collett).

What’s the Dolittle movie about?
After the loss of his wife seven years earlier, the eccentric Dr. John Dolittle (Robert Downey Jr. of Chaplin, Iron Man and Sherlock Holmes), the famous doctor and veterinarian of Queen Victoria England (Jessie Buckley of Wild Rose) isolates himself behind the walls of his mansion, with only his menagerie of exotic animals as his only company. But when the young Queen falls seriously ill, Dr. Dolittle, at first reluctant, is forced to set sail for a mythical island in an epic adventure in search of a cure. As he meets ancient rivals and discovers strange creatures, this journey will lead him to regain his brilliant spirit and courage. In the course of his quest, the doctor is joined by a young apprentice (Harry Collett) and a merry band of animal friends, including an anxious gorilla, an enthusiastic but stubborn duck, a bickering duo between a cynical ostrich and a cheerful polar bear, and finally a stubborn parrot, Dolittle's most trusted advisor and confidant.

@@seulgi1211 He's been clean for years. He got his life back on track. To some people, a stint in jail does that. Also, overdoses. Nobody in Hollywood would hire him until Mel Gibson vouched for him and help him get clean. Now, he's one of the top celebrities (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and he loves kids.
@@arnoldhenry that's not what I meant. I know that Robert Downey Jr. Has a history of 'that' as well. But he's referring to "Sherlock Holmes" which is (based on the novels) literally used drugs. Sherlock Holmes said it keeps him calm and helps him think. You can see a mark on his arms, patches, and smokes around the room.

Well this saying is stupid because it just promotes people to be silent bystanders and do nothing to help or get justice or save anyone when they witness an animal or a person being hurt or killed. We ought to take decisive action against crime and abuse and stop abusers, poisoners and murderers from getting away with their evil deeds. Have your sons watch What Would You Do with John Quinones to see ways you can fight evil and abuse using your power of speech and the community of people around you without getting stitches or abused in the process of bringing justice.

Wait, how come an octopus would worry about that? They can regenerate their bloody limbs.
Yeah, but octopuses' arms don't regenerate with their neurons. Most of an octopus's neurons are located in their arms. If they lose that arm, they can regenerate it, but without the neuronal function. So it's still an issue for them. It would be like a human losing part of their brain.

Why would they even say this? The phrase wasn't coined until much later by mafia syndicates. I know it seems like I am being nitpicky, but the animals constantly say modern quips and phrases despite the setting of this movie preceding almost all of them. Even in a movie with talking animals, it really broke immersion.

When they did pre-release viewings some of the feedback was that some of Holmes’s dialogue was really hard to understand so they actually did go back and dub some of the lines in the movie.

Looks/sounds like his voice has been dubbed or electronically modulated. Something uncanny valley about it.
One thing I kept noticing when I watched this movie in theatres is how you almost never see RDJ's mouth in dialogues. When he's speaking, the camera is always over the shoulder, or looking at something else, or obscured.

As someone whos never seen this film, the dubbing is so prominent. They tried so hard NOT to show his lips like 80% of the time.

So when they wrote this movie script they just saw Robert Downey Jr's performance in the Sherlock Holmes movies and said " make it like that but more insane.
throughout the movie I thought that was Simon Pegg not Michael Sheen. But he was the standout performer.

We already can talk to animals, it's just very difficult and their brains don't process things the same way we do.

c'mon you just cannot blame the director. yes certain scenes could have been better scripted but they knew they were going for British era and Downey was playing a British. They should have thought about it before they started shooting. His dubbing is one of weak points of the movie.

I don't think they used a Filipino word. Dolittle is set in England if I'm not mistaken. "Ta-ra" is a variant of "ta-ta", and is an informal Northern English expression to say "goodbye".

Plot, script, and RDJ’s odd choice of accent are what ruined this movie for me. They should have stuck to the original story by Hugh Lofting.
