Sangeetha Yatra - EP 01 - Shanmukha (Tiruchendur) | Gayathri Venkataraghavan

Namaskarams! Many of us would like to go to different kshetras but sometimes ,we may not be able to travel physically. Our great Sages,composers and poets have given a wealth of information about all these khetras and we can travel mentally and worship when we listen to or sing these compositions. This was the idea behind ‘Sangeetha Yatra’ series.
We begin this Sangeetha Yatra with Lord Karthikeya. Tiruchendur is the second among the 6 Padai Veedus (6 Important Temples) of Lord Muruga in TamilNadu. It is a very popular pilgrimage center and a very powerful divine Kshetra.
It is said that Lord Subramanya vanquished the demons including Tarakasuran and Surapadman. The battle between the two is described in epic proportions, the Asura brothers are said to have used magic and kept reappearing every time they were destroyed.
Lord Karthikeyan used The Shaktyayuda given by Divine Mother Parvati Devi finally to vanquish Surapadman. He wanted to be with Lord Shanmukha and hence he is held by the Lord as a rooster in his banner flag.
This amazing sea-shore temple on the shores of The Bay of Bengal, has been visited by the greatest of saints and seers over the years.
Sage Adi Sankara is said to have had an illness,which was cured by a visit to this great temple and singing the Subrahmanya Bhujangam slokas. This is a universal prayer for generations of Bhakthas, said to cure rare diseases and uplift the mind.
The “Patra Vibhuthi” given in this temple has miraculous curative properties. The temple is again famous for the Shanka Abhisekam to the Lord a commonality in the Tirunelveli belt.
Sri Muthuswamy Dikshitar talks about both these traditions in his Thodi kriti Sri Subhramanya Mam Rakshatu. He describes Subramanya Swami here as , “Shatakoti Bhaskara”, Meaning as effulgent as a hundred crore suns.
Sage Arunagirinathar has garlanded Muruga here with his Tirupugazhs including the very popular one “Iyal Isaiyil “. Composers have penned their devotion for the victorious Lord Karthikeya here with their beautiful songs.
Kandar Kalivenba was composed by Kumaraguraparar in Tirchendur. A story goes, that as he was unable to speak till he was 5 years old, his parents resolved to drown themselves with the boy in the sea. The Lord appeared before them holding a flower; words poured out of the boy's mouth when the Lord asked him what was in His Hand.
Similarly the great poet Nakkerar has sung the praises of the Lord here.
Senapathe, Saravanabhava, Senthil Andavan , Jayanthi Nathar, are some of the ways he is addressed endearingly by Bhakthas here. The apogee of Kanda Shashti is the Soora samharam - Annihilation of Soorapadman. The battle between the Lord and the Asura is re-enacted on the beaches of Tiruchendur on the sixth day.Lakhs of people gather to witness this majestic occasion. It is a sight to behold!
