Purandara Dāsa (Kannada: ಪುರಂದರ ದಾಸ)[1] (1484-1564) is a prominent composer of Carnatic music. He is widely referred to as thePitamaha (the father or the grandfather) of Carnatic Music in honour of his significant contribution to Carnatic music. He formulated the basic lessons of teaching Carnatic music by structuring graded exercises known as Swaravalis and Alankaras, and at the same time, he introduced the Raga Mayamalavagowla as the first scale to be learnt by beginners in the field. He also composedGitas (simple songs) for novice students.
Purandara Dasa addressed social issues in addition to worship in his compositions, a practice emulated by his younger contemporary, Kanakadasa. Purandara Dasa's Carnatic music compositions are mostly in Kannada; some are in Sanskrit. He signed his compositions with the mudra (pen name), "Purandara Vittala" (Vittala is one of the incarnations of the Hindu god, Vishnu).
Inscriptional evidence suggests Purandara Dasa was born in 1484 CE in Kshemapura, near Tirthahalli, Shivamogga district,Karnataka state. According to other opinions, his native town was Purandaraghatta in Karnataka, or Purandaragad near Pune, but the latter is considered a historical mistake - connecting his "pen name" (his ankita) with a location that mainly served as a military encampment in the 15th and 16th century.
Purandara Dasa systematized the method of teaching Carnatic music which is followed to the present day. He introduced the raga Mayamalavagowla as the basic scale for music instruction and fashioned series of graded lessons such as swaravalis, janti swaras, alankaras, lakshana geetas, prabandhas, ugabhogas, daatu varase, geeta, sooladisand kritis. Another of his important contributions was the fusion of bhava, raga, and laya in his compositions. Purandara Dasa was the first composer to include comments on ordinary daily life in song compositions. The itinerant dasas who succeeded him are believed to have followed the systems he devised, as well as orally passing down his compositions.According to traditional sources his compositions number as many as four lac and seventy five thousand. But not more than 700 compositions are accessible now.

After the end of wodeyar rule patronage for karnatic musicians ended.Present day politicians donot value our heritage. In this regard i admire Tamils who have mastered both Karnatic music and Bharatnatyam.Well again only a perticuler community is dominating in both arts.

Nowhere it is stated who the musician is.? do we have to do some guess work amongst a wide galaxy of CARNATIC STYLE SINGERS..? IT IS great disservice to the artist if his name is not mentioned at all.............well there are more than one singer, thats perfectly ok, soon after the title of the kirtana one could indicate who the singer is in small subscript...this is minimum courtesy one could extend to all these learned artists. THE RENDITION ON THE 'KRITIS' IS EXCELLENT & FINE.

While I admire the intent, the lyrics sung by some artists as well as the titles shown here are clearly inaccurate. It is important that those who want to publish it should consult someone who knows Kannada. The inaccuracies in title shown here are as follows. The correct wordings should read: "Yenu Maadidarenu" ; the usual problem of confusing "T" with "D" is exclusive to Tamil speakers."Innu daya baarade" again the same problem plus the confusion between "alpa praana and mahaa praana" is exclusive problem to Tamil speakers."Raama naama paayasake" hrasva and deegha are there in Tamil, but the publisher did not pay attention"Entha Cheluvege" again problem of confusion between "k" and "g" exclusive to TamilThere is what is called sincerity, required from both artists and publishers. There are outstanding composers such as
Swathi Tirunal who composed in multiple languages, without making a mistake. How is it that rendering songs from such great composers does not bring a sense of humility? It is important to know each language and learn its pronunciation properly which is the least an artist or publisher can do. These days there are good script software such as "Baraha" that provide script in every Indian language. If you type in English and use it will show everything in Kannada. Similarly if you type it will show the same in Tamil and so on. With such sophisticated editing techniques available at finger tips, even those who are not from India, do not make mistakes. It is time to pay attention and learn our own tongues; since the lyrics of almost all such songs are derived from Sanskrit.Hope things will improve.

Sir.. while I am purist on Kannada and very proud of this language we should not become too crirical on these matters. this seems fight between our own brothers and sisters from just 30km from Bengaluru.
i am sure any mistake in Uchhaara is unintentional. let us appreciate that great krithis are being preserved by these musicians.
Youngesters showing lot of interest in Purandaradasa krirhis as they get solace..

I totally agree with you on this because this reflects the artist's and publisher's commitment to their art and the lyrics should not in any way compromise the composer's intended meaning or emotion. This is not about Tamil or Kannada but bringing it to the stage with all the authenticity that it deserves which can only be accomplished with learning the language prior to rendering the composition.

While I fully agree with you I have to say this. It is only Tamilians (non kannadigas) who sing Shri Purandaradasara krutigalu. Kannadiga artists think it is below their level to sing/play dasara krutis. without emphasizing on correct pronunciation, we just have to listen to whatever they sing. The situation is pathetic.

Pronunciation is Bad. Tamil influence is too much in pronunciation. please correct it by consulting Kannadigas.

@@teamstark1018 firstly it is middle kannada and venkatachala nilayam is in sanskrit.
Even otherwise how does it matter? Middle kannada phonology is identicall with modern kannada. Almost none of them pronounces mahapranas properly.
