Vidushis Ranjani and Gayatri presented a unique concert at The Music Academy in Chennai on June 5, 2022. They are now taking this on a tour of the USA and they talk to Priya Parthasarathy in an exclusive interview about what went behind the conceptualising of this concert. Raaja by Raga made waves when it premiered in Chennai and here they talk all about how they created it.

How Raja is different from his predecessors is that he fused Indian classical seamlessly with the western classical and orchestrated a symphony in almost all the songs he has composed. That's phenomenal and changed the way composers approached the songs. This unique quality of Raja is what made these songs celebrated by lay people who don't know music as well as geniuses in music. And that's where Raja shines better than anyone else!!

Raja used folk tunes more than classical tunes although even folk tunes had some element of classical music in them. Folk tunes with western orchestration was his USP

Great madam,Raja sir music is Kathambam,all type of flowers tied in string
But for Carnatic, Western classical,folk all in one plate.How nicely sir has harmonised the Carnatic notes and presented it for us,any type of rare ragams too.In 8 bars of carnatic song there will be 8 chord progressions,oh we cant even imagine.In that too .. many chords will be accidentals.I have no words. Great madams,keep going.My best wishes.

No doubt Raja Sir is a Great Legend. RAGA sisters too are in peak fame now.
Musically you can Blend Carnatic & Film songs, but lyrics cannot be matched at all.Gayathri mentions this point.Carnatic music Composers have Composed the lyrics to attain Moksha through Bhakthi & Gnana along with traditional Music.Carnatic Music along with lyrics will melt our heart,whereas Film music cannot.Major difference is this lyrics. Anyway people welcome change & we have to go by the society.

Sir, this Azhagu malar Ada song is Hindolam plus chandrakouns. Raja sir used suddhamadhyamam M1 and in some places used N3 instead of N2. In case Sumanesa Ranjani is prathimadhyamam Ragam usage of M2. Hence Chandrakauns.

i was a big fan of illayaraja until i had a chance to listen to a abhang sung by the sisters. After thatbi stopped listening to both new old cine songs including illayaraja. i am much was surprised and pained to know that they sing cine songs of illayaraja. i have huge respect for both raja and sisters. is it a new way of music industry i am not sure and not happy too.
"Gowri Manohari" - Raja has created some masterpieces.. "Kanna Varuvaya" is my favorite..

MSV and Rammurthi were far superior in the classical genre of cinema music. When it was a classical song they stuck to the fundmentals. Example: Karnan, Kangal Enge Nenjamum Ange - Yezhu swarangalukkul ethhanai paadal - Isai tamizh nee seidhya arum saadhanai. The reason it was so good was because the underlying melody was also powerful. Ilayaraja's melodies are somewhat shallow in comparison, more dependent on the orchestra to give the melody some depth but innately falling short.
Very true statement. However, synchrony leading to melody is also another form of genre in which Ilayaraja has been very successful.

Good carnatic singer sisters and the period grew up is Ilayaraja Music period. Obviously, they are attracted towards that. But normally, there used to be a preface in programmes like Raaja by Raga, that before Raja, who all handled carnatic ragas in film music. No one can ignore the genius G Ramanathan, and the great composers like SMS, KVM and MSV-TKR. At least in forthcoming US programm they will mention about these legends.
This seems to have somehow become a "moral" argument - like it is a "sin" to have taken up Ilaiyaraja but not MSV or others. Total bunkum.The sisters have taken a bold first step so let us appreciate them for that. Moreover, they have at no point put down or said anything negative about the music directors of yester years..
The carnatic fraternity is huge and there is nothing to stop any of the other singers in the field to emulate this model with older music directors of the 40s/50s/60s.
