- Photo books are a great way to organize and share your photo memories. There's something special about printing photos, and this is especially true when they are gathered in book form to tell a story. This video will review the process of creating photo books in Adobe Lightroom Classic from basic setup to cover design and adding text, to page layout and using templates.

@@MSladekPhoto I finished the book and it worked really well. It would have been more sensible to start with a book where it wasn't so important to get it right, but since it worked, I think that's largely down to your explanations. I did get the page versus photo comments wrong initially- it matters when you then swap pictures! Thanks again

Aloha Michael, I got so much out of your tutorial. In fact, I followed along with you and completed my first Blurb photo book. I do think Lightroom/Blurb isn't quite as user friendly as Shutterfly and a few others. However, I did have fun using it and look forward to creating some more. Thanks again!

@@Gabby4637 Yiu can’t save a book as .jpg. You can save book pages as PDF, by clicking on “Save as PDF” in lower left corner when in the Book module. Hope that helps!

Michael, thank for this comprehensive video. It is my first time viewing one of your videos, and I really enjoyed it. I have subscribed as well and look forward to future videos. I did have two comments on this one: it would have been nice to have a demonstration of an internal page with text. I understand that is different from how you use the book feature, but I think others (well, me for sure) would like to add text to an internal page. Secondly, you didn't show us how to send to Blurb. I saw the option in the lower right part of the screen, but I wonder if, for first time users (who would likely be the majority of the viewers of this video), it wouldn't have been beneficial to take it one step further. Thanks again for a wonderful and informative video!

Just a little tip for the spine text, instead of using padding, there is a tool in the type box to center text within the cell (next to the alignment functions), it makes it much easier.

Great video. You explain things clearly. Questions. How do I know what I see on my screen is going to be the same in the book i.e. too bright or too dark compared with my screen. Is there another pre step before I get to the book module? Also, can I use Adobe psd images or do i save as jpgs and put those in the collection?
Hi Susan! Thanks for your kind words. Regarding what's on screen vs. book printing - I recommend calibrating your screen. It's both art and science ;) I use a Spyder X Elite by Datacolor to calibrate my screen. Regarding using PSD in Lightroom - Lightroom is able to work with those just fine, and they will work in books as well. Hope that helps!
Very clear instructions, struggling a bit with the small type on the binding, will watch again, question, I'm new to LR C, when compiling my first book I made a few mistakes, trying to figure out how to undo mistakes, don't want to start from scratch? Hi Michael! Thanks for watching and sharing this. I think you can undo steps with the history panel. Another option is to delete elements from a page or change the template. Hope that helps a bit!
Thank you for this Michael. It's a really comprehensive video. I think there's a plug-in from Blurb to add first? Not sure how that works or is it there 'as if by magic'. Someone asked about adding text to a page and sending to Blurb, which I'd also be interested to know. This video has been so detailed and full of step by step instructions that I've subscribed. Hi again! Yes, you can send directly to Blurb from Lightroom - it’s on the bottom right - “Send Book to Blurb.” I have not done much with text in Lightroom. The tools for text are pretty limited, so if was doing much text with less photos, would likely use InDesign for that and then send a pdf to Blurb. Thoroughly enjoyed this video! I have been using Snapfish and Mixbook....but need to be able to print a book for resale. My question to you is there anyway to get a 60ish page book down to a price for resale using LR & Blurb? I have also Subscribed!
Hi Rosalie! Welcome to the channel - many thanks for your subscription. Regarding Blurb pricing, unless you’re doing quantities over 25 (maybe 50-100) the price for single or small quantities units will likely be too high for resale. They run coupons frequently of 20-30% off. I’ve checked a few other book printing sites and have not found any that are less expensive by a significant amount.

@@de-graftasafo-adjei4646 Hi! At 4:26 in the video I show that you need to click on "Create Saved Book" to do that. It's the only place in Lightroom where you have to click save on anything. Hope that helps!
Hello Michael, Always enjoy your videos and explanations. Your video on making a photobook is excellent. I do however have a couple of questions. Do you make soft proof copies of your images and make adjustments to colors and brightness prior to going to the book module and using Blurb? Secondly, do I need to install Blurb icc profiles? Lastly, does soft proof images alter the original image that have processed in Lightroom or is that a copy of the image and treated separately when adjusting colors and brightness? Thanks for your help and any explanation you can offer on your process, before going to the book module.
Hello! These are great questions. My approach to color is to acknowledge that it's both art and science to get it "right" and to get it right takes lots of effort. So, I'm happy for 95% "right" and do not do any soft proofing. I trust my monitor (Apple Studio Display - LOVE it) and eyes to get me the look I want in Lightroom edits, then go directly to Book module. My experience of books from Blurb regarding color and exposure has been very pleasing - when I look at the books, it looks like I remember the photos looking.
Regarding Blurb icc profiles - I have not installed those. I think that would mostly be helpful in printing proofs to local printer.
One more thought on color/exposure - one reason I don't stress too much about the last 5% or so of accuracy is that when people view photos on screen, I have no control over what quality or settings they have on their viewing device. So, potentially, all the time and energy to get everything just right, could be wasted. Similar for printing - I trust professionals to get the color and exposure levels in printed pieces within spec, as longs as I give then reasonable files to work with.

Hi! Yes, resolution of PDFs export should work well with local printer. To be safe, I’d suggest exporting,yours and sharing with printer to get their input. Cheers!
Thank you for providing this well-structured video. I had previously been exporting photos and uploading them to Shutterfly, but the LR/Blurb system is much more streamlined and more capable. I'll give this a try right along.

Another question, I don't know if you mentioned it, but I found new pictures that i'd like to include in the photobook but I can't figure out how to add them to the collection that already exists.
You can drag new photos to an existing collection by clicking on the photo image itself (not the large gray frame around it) and dragging it over the desired collection and then dropping it there. Another way to go is to set the desired collection as your target collection destination during import. I show how to do that here - ua-cam.com/video/JMZDeVpjjvI/v-deo.html. Hope that helps!
I’ve tagged onto Ansub Cheema’s comment; really good walk through. I have literally in the past week sent off 2 books to BLURB via Lightroom. Relatively easy intuitive process. I live in Scotland, there is excellent tracking provided which is done through the first email confirming its on its way. Not sure yet if I will have to pay additional import taxes - I have had this before on something completely different and it was an update email from the parcel force company; so be aware there may be additional taxes to those not living in US state of production of the book??? Looking forwards to holding my books. Gone are the days when family albums existed - kind of miss those days. BUT - memories through personal books are the way forwards … and I agree with you = printing your own images is really personal and now about to possess my own book of “my” own images will I think top printing - thank you for this fairly in-depth walk through

Question... If I made a hard cover 10"x8" photo book and send to Blurb. But, I also want to make a soft cover of the same book with everything being the same except the cover, do I just change from hard cover to soft cover and re-send to Blurb..?
Hi! You should be able to just select "soft cover" with (mostly) no changes from "hard cover" version. The one thing you may need to change is the spacing/alignment of any text placed on the spine of the book, as the hardcover book will probably be slightly thicker than soft cover. Enjoy!
Great video. I’m doing a vacation book to give to my father for his birthday. I’m not sure what the greyed out parts around the cover is. The picture I’ve chosen bleeds into this greyed out area. Does this mean it won’t be in the final product? I don’t want the composition to be cut off in that area. But also don’t want to resize it and have a border around the photo. Hope that makes sense. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you for your time.
Hi! The greyed out area is called the bleed area. This extra area is to allow for slight variations and movement in the paper as it is cut/trimmed. The photo should extend into this area, but know that this will mostly/completely be cutoff when the paper is trimmed for the book. Instead of resizing the photo frame/box for the photo, you could scale it inside the box to fit as desired. Hope that helps!

Been using PS for over 20 years and have only started to use LR to publish a Blurb book. When you zoomed in on your image you had sliders for moving up and down and side to side. I only have one slider that goes up and down. Have I locked something in? Ideas? Thanks

My thought is that the reason you are only seeing one scroll bar (vertical) is that your image, at the magnification level you have chosen, does not have anything to scroll to in the horizontal direction. Is it a vertical photo? First question: How do you get your images from the collection to show up in the filmstrip while your in the book module? I have clicked on my collection but the pictures will not appear? Second question: How do you keep the filmstrip at the bottom of the page from not covering up the dial on the bottom right that changes the size of the thumbnails you are looking at when your viewing your page views? Hi Allison!Thanks for your questions. I think the answer to both is: you have the filmstrip (the bottom "panel" in the Lightroom interface) set to "show when cursor is over" mode. You can change this by putting your cursor at the bottom of the Lightroom window, and then in the filmstrip panel that now is visible, click on the small gray triangle in the middle bottom of that panel. This will now continually show the filmstrip panel. By the way, all the panels (top, left, right) have the same option and interface to change visibility mode. Hope that works and helps!
Blurb is great with their software. What I don’t like is their print quality. Not sure if it’s just the book they printed for me but I’ve had some errors in printing with lines running down the pages, photos aren’t sharp with “dots” in them might be the printer they use. I just expected a crisp clear photo that I see on my screen. I should say that not all are like this. I noticed it’s mostly ones with a blue sky. However, have you experienced any issues with your photo prints when using blurb?
Hi Matt! Wow - really surprised you've had print quality issues with Blurb. That has not been my experience at all. I've only had GREAT quality prints from them, and I order about 3 or 4 books per year. I did have an error once, and I contacted them and they reprinted for free. I think they have presses in different locations across US, so maybe I am fortunate to have a really good one? Good luck on your future book printing projects - would love to hear update.
@@MSladekPhoto yeah it’s a bit strange. If I flip through my book I’d say most of the images are perfectly fine and acceptable. However, there are a few others that are not clear, pixelated a bit etc. Which is weird because I processed those files like all of the other pics. Just drop them into bookwright and resize to page as I did for my vertical images.
I did reach out to blurbs customer service yesterday so I’ll see what they say about it. Hopefully they’ll be able to assist with the issue.

@@MSladekPhoto they ended up giving me a credit for a reprint. The reprint was much better on the photos. However, I have 2 indents on the spine of the book but sure if that’s normal or not with their binding. But other than that it was good!

I'm beginer in lightroom. Can someone help me where is option to set unusual size of book 30×45cm?
Hi Filip! Unfortunately, you are unable to set custom book sizes in the Lightroom Book module. You will need to consider other book making services and options to get that size. Good luck!
At the beginning you told us you don't need to check the boxes, e.g. "sync w/ Lightroom," but not why you made those decisions. Why wouldn't I sync with Lightroom? Does that mean my changes won't be synced?
Hi! I usually do not sync the book, but I often will sync the collection that the photos are originally located. This is just a personal preference! Hope that helps!
Would you know if you can use multiple collections in a book
Hi John. Great question! I don't think you can create a book from multiple collections. What I would do is create a new collection for the book, which would contain photos from the multiple collections. Hope that makes sense!

WHAT DIGITAL SIZE TO YOU USE TO IMPORT IMAGES? ARE THEY RAW OR RESIZED?
Hi Lorin! When working in Books module in Lightroom, it uses the images as you imported them. My workflow is to import full-size RAW photos, so that's what gets used in Books. From there, after sizing and layout is complete, when the book is exported, Lightroom will re-size images as appropriate for the layout and print resolution. Hope that helps!
How can you add photos to the collection you are using to create a book? When I am creating a book and realize that I need additional photos I have created an additional collection folder, but when I select the additional photo collection it takes the book I am working on away.
Hi Trina! Great question... You can add a photo to a collection that you are already using to build a book by dragging and dropping the photo into the book collection. Here's how: 1) find the photo you want to add to the book collection. 2) Once you have it located, scroll in your collections panel, so you can see the book collection. 3) To drag the photo(s) to book collection, click on the photo (NOT THE GRAY BOX AROUND THE PHOTO) and drag that onto the book collection. @@MSladekPhoto Thank you so much for your reply. The process you describe works on all but a few of the photos, but I actually need to move a couple hundred photos. Is there no way to move a lot of photos (like a folder full of photos into an existing target collection)? Otherwise I suppose I just need to start from scratch and rebuild the target collection (painful!!).
Also, a lot of the photos that I am using are black and white photos from the early 1940s and they have the '! - resolution warning', some I can zoom to a better resolution level but most of them I cannot and they are in the 50 to 90ppi range. Is it OK to use them anyhow and/or is there someway to make them have a higher ppi in Lightroom 'Development'?

@@trinadegener8303 Hi again! You're welcome, and glad it helped. Regarding moving folder full of folders - yes, you can do that! Go to folder/collection in Lightroom with desired photos and then select-all for all the photos, or shift-click to select just some of desired photos. Then, click on any one of the photos (again, the photo, NOT THE GRAY FRAME) and drag and drop the group of photos to target book layout collection.
Regarding old photos resolution - short answer - it depends! First, low resolution warning is pretty conservative in Blurb. Printing can also be a little forgiving of lower resolution, as the dot gain of the ink hitting the paper hides some of the detail loss anyway. Also, for older photos, the low resolution look may fit the feeling of the era? Second, if you have the original negatives, you could always rescan at higher resolution for printing. If you have only photo prints, they tend to be low resolution, so there's not much you can do. Third - no, Lightroom can not do anything to increase resolution/detail. There are some programs that claim they can do that, but seems a bit like magic to me (which is what I call anything I don't understand how it works.)

Buying a software and then being bound to a single (overpriced) publisher (blurb) in a software that I pay for is really disappointing - the option to create a PDF or JPGs of the pages still does not offer full control over the format of the book - Europeans are stuck to weird US / inch formats. No A3, No A4 - no standards. How could that happen?
Hi! Sorry that the Blurb option is not a good fit for you. Here's the cool thing - you can simply export the photos and then use in whatever desktop or web-based publishing solution works best for you and your preferred format. Soooooooo many options! I hope you find a solution that works for you and invest time in creating photo books you love. Cheers!
It's not 10 x 8. It's actually 9.5 x 8, which is almost square, not landscape. False advertising on Blurb's part.
Interesting! I just measured one of my softcover books, and found same dimensions as you. Hardcover is 9.75"w x 8.5"h.
