Growing up, in the 70's and 80's, playing multiple sports, and playing thousands of hours on the school playgrounds, I've never saw or even heard of any of my peers sustaining a non-contact knee injury. The only time I saw someone get hurt was if they stepped into a hole or a depression in the dirt/grass (usually one that hid a sprinkler head), which caused them to unexpectedly twist their knee. But even that was VERY rare.
As kids of this time period, we were so active. On the weekends, and in the summer time we'd stay out all day, from sunrise to sunset, riding our bikes for miles, swimming and fishing at the beach, going on hikes, playing pick up basketball at the local courts, often all in the same day. Climbing trees, jumping out of trees, playing tackle football at the beach or at the park., etc. We also played organized sports as well. Vast majority of injuries were contact injuries.
Today I hear of kids injuring their ACLs once, twice, even three times sometime before even finishing high school!
    What's happened??

Thanks for covering those of us that didn't want surgery. I'm exactly 11 months out from an ACL rupture and everyone thought I was crazy to not do surgery. I kept my knee in flexion for the first 4 months and just did floor mobility exercises. I've been back to weight training for 4 months and did some boot camps last month. Doing really well but I probably won't go back to dancing, maybe skiing next ski season.

This journey is going to look different person to person and we recommend having a conversation with your healthcare team about how this can look for you!
