I fell down and fractured my right knee four days ago. I am still in bed with a brace. I stumbled upon your video while learning about TPF. Thank you for sharing!

I broke my tibial plateau 2 wks ago skiing. I hit a large area of ice and lost control. Initially I thought the injury was a ligament/tendon injury as I had no real fracture pain. I ended up having surgery where I had a backward 7 plate and screws put in. Looks like we had pretty similar issues. Thanks for posting

Thank you for sharing your experience… I was thinking of sharing my story as a much older patient of 68 so I really hope you won’t mind me sharing some of my experience here… I got my tibial plateau fracture in a cycling accident… fortunately for me it was decided that I wouldn’t have a operation but they have told me that there is a real possibility of arthritis in the future and I may need a knee replacement… it’s amazing how differently the treatments can be maybe because I have no pins holding the fracture in place though … I was absolutely told no weight baring for 6 weeks and was given no physio… though I was told that I didn’t need to wear the brace when I was resting right from week 2 by then all of my swelling had gone down. By week 3 I did start some exercises after looking for advice from UA-cam physiotherapists but none of that was weight bearing. My week 6 xray showed good attachment of the bone and now Week 7 to 9 I have been advised for partial weight bearing still using crutches. Still no physio but just told to gradually keep increasing this. I am in week eight now and still have some strange sensations like my foot doesn’t quite belong to me although I have complete control over the movement of it. Of course these fractures are not just bone but cartilage tendons nerves muscles and fascia! So some of this stuff takes longer than a break to get better. I started using comfrey (knit bone) from the get go and like you magnesium to support recovery. Something else I found super helpful was meditation and I invested in a subscription to insight timer for £5.99!a month … there are so many healing meditations you can access .. I am particularly finding davidji super helpful… it’s all about staying positive about your recovery.. mind over matter… I wish everyone going through this the very best in their recovery back to full mobility 🙏🙏🙏

Thank you so much for this diary. I’m 7 weeks post accident- 11 nights in Italian and UK hospitals, 3 different plasters ( which got bigger and heavier every new one I had!) was put in a brace like yours 2 weeks ago and next week I am finally having my op to pin the bone - a crazy amount of delay compared to yours and I’m using my private health insurance 😮. I’m desperate to finally get on the road to recovery and have already booked next years ski trip in anticipation 🤞🤞

I am actually into the 6th day of my surgery. Currently i am able to bend my knees up to 70° without being too painful (because the doctors here in malaysia force us to do it). But hearing you said the swelling would reduced in the 2nd week actually a relief. Thank you for your sharing. I'm started to feel eager to live my life again😂

Our stories are very similar recovery wise, mine was my ankle though last June when i was 49 (first bone i had broken!) . Sleep wise i got an elevation pillow from amazon, it was a game changer. I had to use a zimmer frame with a bag on the front so i could take stuff from one room to another as i couldn’t use crutches 😂. I developed cellulitis from my wound so spent another week in hospital. I was very lucky and got hydrotherapy on the NHS and it made all the difference with flexibility and mobility. You are doing so well!

Thank you for sharing your story! I suffered a type 6 back in December 26th and am doing significantly better now. Just can’t sprint really. I did unfortunately develop a DVT which put me on an oral blood thinner which I finished the beginning of April. I broke mine playing sports and stepping awkwardly, what a boring way to break your leg. I’m glad you are recovering well, being young certainly helps. I am 25 years old

Hi Harriet, thank you for sharing your story. I’m 6.5 weeks post op. I had so little direction … I’d still be in a knee brace & non weight bearing if it wasn’t for research I’ve done myself & information from people like yourself. People should listen to their body/ leg/ knee - sometimes the advice is just far to conservative & actually detrimental to recovery.

    • @HarrietMurray

I broke my Tibia Plateu Fracture playing football ⚽️. No contact just by myself I was running and I stepped kind of weird because of the turf and felt two pops. I initially thought it was my ACL as that is a common injury in football but when I got to the ER they did X rays and some other type of scan and that’s when I found out that I had broken my Tibia. Fast forward to 6/9/24 I get my surgery and honestly I was so excited to get fixed up but yet so nervous as this was my first serious injury and I gotta say surgery and waking up has been the most painful part of this injury. Right now I’m on week one and I’m having trouble finding a comfortable way to sleep. I have yet to see my scar and I also didn’t get a chance to speak to my surgeon when I woke up to find out how many screws I have inside my leg. The hardest part about being hurt is accepting that my knee will probably never be the same. It honestly makes me shed a couple tears and it’s just hard to accept. I no longer trust my body and like you said it might all be mental.

@@XiaoXinLie Yes I’m walking now and still doing physical therapy to strengthen the leg. I still have discomfort and i still feel some pain in the area of injury. Doctor says it’s a long recovery a year + till I gain the muscle atrophy back in my leg. I basically got all of my range of motion back to like 140 degrees. I’m at a stage where I’m able to get by doing everyday stuff but I’m still nowhere near to being active and playing sports again. It’s also weird how when I touch my leg I’m able to feel some of the hardware in there and it’s weirds me out.

  • @gineenspring855

Wow! You are not having any PT or many restrictions...probably why you are walking already...meanwhile, I had 3 months no weight bearing and lost the bend in my knee. I am in Outpatient Therapy learning to walk with a walker and trying to bend my knee again.
I chose wheelchair initially due to no weight bearing, crutches seem very scary.
Dish Tub to carry food or plates out of kitchen...
Ramps off Amazon to get out the door...
    Adjustable Bed helped alot!
    Portable Commode...
Shampoo caps when I couldn't wash my hair.
Sounds like you will be recovered soon!

Great vid and well done you ! I am 7wks post op... my injury was after a 12mile hike in the Brecon Beacons, yards from car park ! ..managed to put my leg down into a hole, upto my thigh. With a thud 😮.
Operated on, several pins and plate. So now my seventh week I'm able to partiel weight bare, brace adviced to be worn while out n about or if needed in house for extra support .
Have had walking frame (named Johnny Walker 😉) But this week crutches are the new toy..and hating them ! Feel sooo unstable. But practice pratice I guess😬.
Been very fortunate with pain from start ! So the phisyo bending / stretching is the most discomfort I've had.
But must keep reminding myself, it's not the op that's the issue. But the muscle stretch..yucky feel I have to get through.
My wound is healing well, but did have a sore spot that broke out last week, yesterday the doc, squeezed and tweezed an internal stitch out, that obviously wasn't happy and wanted to come out. I had been concerned, and thankful it wasn't any unhappy metal work !
I am massaging my legs well.
Am drinking comfrey tea. Taking calcium tabs. Drinking full fat milk. And have purchased an exercise bike, which I can't wait to have a go on !
I turn 62 today🙈...and am determined to be walking the beautiful countryside again ...when I can 🤞🤞🤞🙏🙏🙏💪

    Hello Harriet,
Thank you for sharing. Your video has been quite helpful and informative. I had a similar injury and I am currently 3 weeks post surgery, non-weight bearing and my brace is set at 90 degrees. My question is with the 90 degree angle on your brace, how often and how long are you keeping it at the angle? I can only manage a couple of minutes at a time every couple of hours otherwise it’s straight/elavated most of the time? What’s been your experience?

    • @HarrietMurray
      @HarrietMurray  5 місяців тому

I have just uploaded a 6 month update if youre interested! I was bending it to 90 degrees quite comfortably once my swelling had gone down. When I was watching TV in the evenings, I would just constantly bend and straighten it to keep it moving. I hope your recovery is going well!
