- Let's PAINT! In Episode 107 SLOW! we spray Axalta Rival 3.5 Polyurethane in 1957 India Ivory and GM's "Pull Me Over Red" on our 1956 Chevy Bel Air in our home garage with beautiful results!

It looks really good! I've got about 4 or 5 flaws that I'm going to work on, some that might require spray touch up, some that might require a q-tip, and others that might buff out. I'll likely dig into those today!

Thanks! If you're spraying it yourself, just be careful with the flattener in the paint. It needs to be agitated often to keep it uniform and consistent.
Man, that looks sooo good!!! I am so happy for you!! Most folks will never understand all the intense labor and time invested. Those of us that live to work on our cars will always respect you and love the labor that you invested in your project. That respirator was brand new at the start of the shoot and have only seen less than 1 gallon of paint! But they look like they've been through a war!

Wow! Now that's some commitment right there! I know you've been following along for a while now and I do appreciate it. You know, I had a lot of reservations about releasing a video that was an hour-and-a-half long, thinking no one would be interested or it would get a lot of thumb-downs. The opposite happened! I released it three or four days after the short version, once the views on that one petered out. And who would have thought that the long version got almost just as many views, and it was released MID-WEEK! Guess you never know!
Wow! I'm excited! How do you like it? How would you compare the shine/glamor with a base coat clear coat? Honestly?
You know, one of the options that I had was to lay a clear coat over this single stage. I researched it and learned that the clear tends to mute the vibrancy of the color. Someone had black single stage next to one with clear over it, and there was a definite difference. Jack at Mike & Jerry's explained that base-clear was mainly developed to address VOCs and metallics. But for a solid color, a GOOD single stage wins the day.
@RestoringChristine1956 I'm going to do mine victory red and bombay ivory so those are both solid colors. So I guess I'll be going where you went for the paint. 🙌🏻

Thanks for the kind words! I'll be painting the trunk soon, maybe even this weekend. I'm planning on spraying it with Zolatone spatter paint, even though it's not factory original.
Looking great, been following this build since the beginning. I myself am building a 56 still on frame hoping to hit the body soon. Love watching your videos get inspiration to a first time builder.
Question though, are you going to put clear over your paint or is it more like a single stage?
Glad to hear from long-haulers! This is a single stage, and I did consider clear-coating everything, but the research I did showed that it would likely mute the vibrance if the color. Bit what sold it is the finish I got afyer just 2 coats. The shine is just ridiculous. Keep us in the loop on your build!
Why didn't you seal it before paint?
You know, we talked about using a sealer months ago, but when it came time to paint, it didn't come up and I forgot (never used it before). I've already fixed the 3 flaws I had in the ivory, a run and venting pits by sanding and buffing, and a third by sanding, shooting some touch up, and buffing that out. I've got one or two spots in the red to fix next. I'm sure sealer would have helped.
I started to watch this Episode and had to stop and back up a few episodes to Eps 76. I've been working on my '57, 2 dr post 150 series Gasser and got behind on your videos. I love all the info on body filler brands types, as well as the Primer types etc. What primer is best to use on bare metal prior to body filler? I've heard both Self etch out of a can and/or 2X Epoxy type primer. Any thoughts? You videos are very good and always make me want to go back to my garage and keep working. very motivating. I might even try to paint my own like you're doing. Great stuff.
Thanks! On bare metal, definitely go for an acid etching primer, but stay away from the Rustoleum version. I don't know what's in their product, but nothing sticks to it except maybe their own paint. When I primed her the day she came back from blasting, I used an Axalta epoxy primer that was also a metal etch over the entire car. Since then, I've been using mostly rattle cans from the auto paint store.

Much Appreciated. once I get finished with all my rust repair I'll need to seal the whole car before body filler and was wonder about that epoxy primer. so will seal mine with that then start the filler work. Been following since the beginning when I was overseas working for the Government, been retired now for a year and a Half and putting to work what I learned watching you videos, and don't sell yourself short, you are in the big time just like Derek B. in my book.

I had reservations about the hour-plus version, even though some of the big channels (like Vice Grip) can pull it off. That's why I decided to release the short version for the masses, and then this long version for the devoted. Glad you liked them both!

I never saw you set up your gun before you started painting the car. You should have a good size piece of cardboard tapped up some place to shoot on when setting up the gun. You would have seen right away you got too much overspray on the top. Then on the white side, your pattern was way too narrow. If you were shooting any thing metalic you would have tiger stripes.. Set the gun up on a board BEFORE you put any paint on the car.
Thanks for the tips and feedback. I probably wouldn't have realized the overspray issue because that was the first time I've sprayed that product and it's a lot more viscous than everything other than true Imron, which is like glue. As I was laying it down in quantity over a large area I could tell something wasn't right. Once I got the tip sorted out, you have to realize that this product is thicker than most. It doesn't spray thin, which makes the fan look narrow. I sprayed it as I was instructed by the paint shop. Check out Episode 104: ua-cam.com/video/KaM9-4vDMD4/v-deo.html . If this was a 2-stage base and metallic, the paint would have been a lot thinner and would have sprayed completely differently. Like you, I was expecting this material to spray the same way, but it doesn't, which is exactly what the paint rep cautioned me about. Overall, it's looking really good!
