      Yes that was the law from I think 1974 on. Cars had to absorb I think 5 mph in the front with no damage and 2 and 1/2 mph in the rear. When the law first came out it ruined the appearances of cars like the Camaro. In time they made it where bumpers could be incorporated into the body of the car which is what we have now. Around this same time pollution controls were required which cut back on the efficiency and performance of motors. We went from having great looking fast cars in the late 1960s to ugly inefficient crap in the 70s. And then along came Toyota.

    I'd really suggest claying the paint before cutting if you do something like this again. It'll take the dirt out of the paint and this will enable the polisher to do a much better and easier job.

      @gamby16a 3 роки тому +5

      I hate typing this, because everyone has an opinion on detailing and all of them are different. That said, I'd use a paint cleaner, THEN clay, so as not to go through 3 claybars. I might even take the time to use a glaze after the polish, just to condition the paint a bit more before waxing.
      That said, the finished product still looks 100% better. Very satisfying video.

    • @andyb6851
      @andyb6851 3 роки тому +4

      @@gamby16a Good idea, makes sense to use the iron and tar remover first, especially if the lacquer layer is still thick enough.
      I'd also suggest trying a clay mitt or towel instead of a bar, along with a lot of soapy water. Way faster than a clay bar.

    1. Never wash or polish outdoors, and *especially* not in direct sunlight.
    2. Always remove engine electrical parts or cover them with plastic.
    3. Never spray the engine bay with a strong stream of water.
    4. Only use a neutral ph-balanced car shampoo, not household dish washing liquid like "Dawn"
    5. Only use high-quality auto chemicals and 300-GPM micro-fiber towels labeled “Professional”

    I owned one of the these. Wonderful cars that sadly get overlooked by BMW enthusiasts. Just an FYI, there's two ways to do the bumper tuck. The easy way is to drill holes into and compress the bumper shocks then trim the rubber side bellows. But the preferred way is to replace with the Euro bumpers, which have be special ordered. Maximiian Imports sells these but as these cars have been out of production for four decades, these aren't cheap or easy to find. You might also try fitting late e30 bumpers. They fit but aren't correct for the car. Thanks for rescuing this classic!

    It's amazing how from hard work little bit of money that you can turn something around. A few years back I bought a Ford expedition that ran fantastic. When I read the ad and saw the mileage and the money I figured something wasn't right. Had pictures of the outside which the paint was in bad shape from never being waxed or clean. That didn't bother me so I set up to go see it. When the person opened the doors for me the inside was a disaster. There was buttons broken switches snapped off and the guy let his kids play in the car as it was a toy or something. Even after seeing all of that I decided to go ahead and buy it but I even offered him less money than he was asking. At first he said no and then his wife said do you have the money on you and can you take the car with you. So once I came home was it I went around and made a list of what was broken and needed fixing.
    As the parts were coming in I started cleaning everything. After just fixing all the cosmetic things I was having neighbors stopping by asking me if it was still for sale. Like you're BMW they wrote on the windows for sale and I hadn't done anything with the glass to that point. I had neighbors offering me twice the amount that I had spent and I still hadn't even finished making every part shine. After seeing that it just blows me away how people leave money by simply being too lazy just to clean something.
    I love what you have done so far with this car. It just shows some hard work really does pay off.
    Look forward to watching the next video.

    I thought you would have used a clay bar to get some of the trash out of the clear before buffing. They have light to heavy duty options and I'm sure the heavy duty would be much less abrasive than the finest of wet sands.
    *Love the vids and the Porsche is freaking sweet!

    Nice save. While the E21 is generally unloved, they are good little cars and will go almost forever with a little bit of maintenance. In todays insane used car market, I bet you could get good money for that car.

    Looks great! Now you just have to buy some new Bimmer badges and get rid of that horrible fake M badge!

    I like these detail videos but I'd rather see revivals. How about some boat stuff? As a boat mechanic you must flip some boats in the spring and summer, no?

    Goofy Euro spec bumpers? We just had chrome bumpers with no plastics in Europe. Those are US bumpers.

    Have you ever tried black shoe polish on your window rubbers, just with a bit of rag, & interior trim shine on outside plastic bits such as the grill bars, you don't even need to polish the plastic.

    Ahhh, the US bumper from hell. I love the patina! I wonder if the former yuppie recognizes his car?

    You're lucky to have classics like this not rust away like they do here in the UK. Good to see it back in action even if it has a whole load of miles on it. Oh, and please remove the M badge!

    How come in America so much cars are left to rot somewhere instead of selling it right away when it's not going to be used anymore? Good job anyway to bring it back to life :)

    PS those are 'goofy spec' US bumpers. The Euro ones were closer to the body and didn't have the huge rubber insert. Those Fed Regs made many great looking cars just look ... 🤢
