Man I love this guy. Just the way he presents himself, down to earth and really talks to you through the camera. Great job. Would love to meet you one day when I'm in the states
This was a GREAT video! I'm 5'10 and 240 lbs... and 50 yo. I grew up with guns and then locked them up for a couple of decades (for the most part) while my kids were in the house. Now I'm an empty nester and getting back into handgun self defense (9mm strikers) and I was amazed at how many bad habits I managed to clean cobwebs off of. This video accelerated my rust-removal AND helped refresh the importance of solid mechanics. Liked, shared, subscribed, and highly recommended to others!
Yes, that left elbow cant is a great help in leveling-off that recoil. Also, I've found that pushing my trigger hand (fist) forward and at the same time pulling the other hand inward I create somewhat of a front anchor that helps in the overall stabilization of the handgun.
Short and sweet. I’m going to try the elbow trick next time I shoot. You didn’t mention that choosing a larger weapon will help with recoil. Size does matter!!
Trigger control is simple, when your finger is on the trigger you mean to kill, take it off when your not gonna kill.. big hands or little hands, guns don’t shot themselves... I spent over 20 years professional dealing with guns and I have never pop a round off. Cause when I shot I put my finger on the trigger when I am not shorting I take it off... I trained that why for years!!!
This is (around) the fifth time I've watched this video. When I'm having a "not so hot" day on the range, I use it as one of my "go to" instructional video texts. Very basic, but very solid info.
I wanted to say after I watched your video, my wife and I went out to the range. I’m 5’ 9” 205 and I incorporated what I watched, and I have to say it helped. Sharing with my wife about leaning forward and her stance, one foot back. Even helped her. We were shooting a 9mm. She even said after words she really enjoyed shooting. I tried the twist of the left arm, it was a little strange getting use to the angle of the gun, however so slight, but it worked at least I feel it did. Thanks for sharing your wisdom, and thanks for your service.
I'm pretty small statured (5'10", 155). I took my EDC (Springfield XDS 9mm) and my RIA 1911 to the range; I used these techniques with both pistols. There was a noticeable reduction in muzzle flip with both pistols, but most impressive was that the XDS barely moved in my hands at all. Thanks for the great instructional videos, Mr. Lovell.
When you present your gun even without shooting I can just feel the connection and focus and the switch flip from poet to warrior and I’m reminded how lucky I am that I’m not a terrorist against John Lovell. But seriously, the content is great, so much solid info in all your videos, plus they are so fun to watch. Thank you for your service!
@its yeshua not jesus so get over it ...but John Wick is legit, I mean Keanu Reeves really puts in the work to send lead down range along with taking CQC courses. He's no SF, but he's better than the average Joe.
@@LRRPFco52 haha. I taught martial arts for a long time and I always said "I don't want to get in a fight with a mechanic or a farmer because those are the guys that have the absolute strongest hands, which make Rock hard fists and gorilla strong grip. Nope.
I remember the first time I really thought I could shoot well, and a guy in my first ccw course complimented me, and offered a kind suggestion that I move my trigger finger slightly on the trigger to change the dynamic of my trigger control, and I shot my first one hole group at 7 yards. It’s amazing the impact a little experience can have on you’re performance. The elbow trick is absolutely something I’ll have to play with next time I’m at the range, thanks for making the video and sharing.
Great tips John !! Not many instructors out there who are providing this type of information . Sometimes it's the little "tweaks " in technique they make all the difference in the world 👍👌
John Lovell hey John I just took a 5 class NRA pistol class and the instructor kept preaching relax your grip relax your grip almost to the point where I felt it was recoiling too much, which from alot of videos I watch on YT from high level instructors seems to be the complete opposite of what my instructor was saying. Just how relaxed should a pistol grip be? Rob Latham on one of his vids says to grip it as tight as you can, ita like who to believe??
+Michael Edwards the instructor you had is most likely not worried about fighting (stress + speed + accuracy) and is instead interested in recreation (accuracy only). I wouldn't say he's 'wrong' unless he breathes a word about defense or fighting

"*Thanks so much guys*" No, thank YOU, I'm too poor to fly out of Alaska for good training so I have to rely on online sources and it's great that you have been willing to share this stuff. Hopefully this will clean up my times at a pistol competition tomorrow.

I watched your video many many moons ago. Yesterday I was at the range shooting my Ruger mark 4. 22 LR and noticed that I was doing exactly as you demonstrated. Now 22 doesn’t have a lot of recoil but I was amazed at how quickly I was able to get my sites back on target and I was shooting 😊Pretty darn quick as well great demo.❤
Best insight I've found. Now I notice that other instructors are including or referring to these tips but not one emphasizes as clearly as you do. You are the POET, my friend.
That elbow tip made a world of a difference! Thank you so much. It definitely helps a ton and removes a majority of the harm from a sloppy trigger pull.
Thanks for the tip about the elbows! I actually have a birth defect in my elbow that keeps it from being able to rotate. But I tried it in dry practice and I think I'll be able to rotate it just enough to put the pressure you talk about on it. Can't wait to try it in love fire. Thanks for all your content, especially the mindset videos!
I figured out number 2 after countless times of bewilderment at the range. Thanks for the affirmation. Military pistol training isn't always as in depth as it could be. God Bless
John, you are my hero. I train daily with you. Although I have been a shooter since childhood the consequences old age and health issues have compromised my skill. I refuse to give up and will always be a “protector”. Bless you🙏🏼
I notice when you present, you're right eye dominant (our left). The can't produced from rolling your weak hand elbow helps bring the sights to that side. What about those of us that have a right strong hand, but a left dominant eye? It really screws with me switching from my rifle scope to my pistol sights. Also the transition from shooting with one eye to both eyes open.

I can't wait to try this out at the range. I'm a little dude and a beginner to pistol shooting. I like the fight presentation. I'll be saying it to myself in the lane for a good hour ripping off rounds. Good video. When you first posted it I didn't watch it because I wasn't shooting pistol yet but now I'm going back through all your vids for some awesome tips and advice! Thank you and keep it up.
God damn....I tried the whole "camming the elbow" technique, and it's seriously like shooting a different gun. Awesome advice as usual John, keep up the great work!!
JOHN...… You are a GIFT FROM GOD ! ……. I cant remember how may times I have watched beginning shooters and many experienced males (who SHOULD know better) present with a crazy body posture where their body is arched backwards from feet to head...….. and they look like they are trying to keep the gun as far from their face as possible--- like they expect it to explode. :-) I would usually show them a posture which one might use to grapple with a wrestling opponent. In reality, the opponent is the recoil. Your instruction about proper posture is "right-on" afaic. You are the FIRST person I have EVER seen come out and crystalize this idea. (other than me :-) ) I also LOVED your idea that you posture reflects your mental level of preparedness to attack. I don't even like calling it "defending" ----- as I see it--- when you are countering a deadly threat your job is to become ( in a millisecond) the badest MF in the room-- so bad that you steam roller how ever many attackers/perps are in need of your attention. They become YOUR hapless victim . I think a good forward aggressive posture is needed--- not only for recoil control but also to be the beginning movement of some kind of dynamic movement. I see the goal is to be able to move and shoot faster than you can identify targets. (hopefully ALL the targets are all ready confirmed before the opening move). Anyway -- keep the great videos coming--- and keep innovating and distilling the inner and outer warrior way !
John, I don't know what it is, but I could listen to you talk all day long. Just found your channel a week ago, can't get enough. Keep up the good vids, and thank you for your service to our great country sir.
It's like having a booger hanging and your friend (in this case, camera operator) doesn't tell you until AFTER!!! Anyway, greatly appreciate the videos and faith!

I normally just read comments, but I'd really appreciate some impressions from your family if y'all are ever in SC. Much love for what you stand for. Really hit home with the family values.God bless
Nice. An added point I teach is rotating both elbows inside, This creates equal torque pressure on both side of the pistol. One is able to hold the pistol in a relaxed yet still maintaining firearm retention way.
Jip Pl what in the hell do you contribute? All I've seen of you at this point is bitching, so I guess that makes you the bitch of the gun community. Nothing but top notch content at Mr.gunsandgearchannel. don't watch it though itd go over your head
I'm not exactly amazed at how many people don't understand the magic of the elbow as people learn their stance for target shooting and not defensive/offensive shooting, but years and years ago as I was working on my certs for PPO, I was introduced to the C.A.R. system from an astute instructor picking up on my mixed cat bag of franken-stances on what worked best for me at the time. Talk about falling in love with a good idea!
Thanks John. I really appreciate all the tips we get from trained pros like yourself, in this crazy world we need all the help we can get. GOD Family & Country.
+Vincent Wilkes my rear iron is on backwards! GREAT eye, I'm so impressed. I did it because the rear side of the site is sharper and causing my shirts to get holes faster when I'm practicing my draw. Running the sights this way makes no difference because of the rmr and relative height of the suppressor sights
Thank you, friend. Every time I shoot, I have to aim for the left shoulder in order to get to the chest. I know it’s because of recoil anticipation. I will try your technique and let you know how I do. Great video.
Just left the range and that cant of the off-hand elbow is exactly what ruined my day...not doing it, of course. Now I'm itching to go back in a couple days. Thanks, John!
It’s interesting cause everything you covered is exactly what I’ve learned to implement without any training.. since I’ve started going out shooting, I’ve learned on my own. And it all works perfectly for me.. one guy at the range asked me why I put my foot behind me and tilt to the side. I told him it helps me gain control of the gun more than any other stance. So he tried it. And he said it was actually a more comfortable and confident stance he has ever tried. I also took a buddy of mine out and taught him what’s works best for me... and he now can hit the target a lot better than before.. thank you for the video.
Are you right or left eye dominant? I think it would make a difference using your techniques. I am right handed and left eye dominant. Would your tips work for me?
Ideally, you should be shooting with both eyes open to capitalize on the situational awareness advantage, but it shouldn't take long to acclimate. Your dominant eye should easily pick up the front sight in full presentation as John examples. I'm also right handed and left eye dominant, and Johns advice works phenomenally well for me; after a few hours of practicing the draw and presentation with the new tweaks (remember, going slower is more beneficial when practicing, especially new techniques. Building accurate muscle memory is more important than speed; that will come later as a natural by-product of muscle memory. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.), it not only feels normal, it feels _better._ More natural; the left wrist cammed forward felt awkward for about 15 minutes, but now I don't know that I could grip a handgun differently without it feeling alien.
NikolaiVolkov I am also right handed and left eye dominant. But my right eye is so weak that when I took the eye test to renew my license I actually had to close my left eye just to be able to see the letters on the right side. I just started shooting a couple of months ago, and I started shooting with my right eye closed. I don't know when I started keeping both open, I think I did it without even noticing.. But I have no problem not closing my right eye now.
Friend of mine mentioned the “elbows out” thing you talk about to me about a year ago. Made my shots, follow up shots especially, so much better, and quicker. Quicker shots mean I’m less likely to anticipate the recoil. Which leads to less “down and left” issues. Then it’s just a matter of practicing good trigger control. The way he described it....Get a two hand grip on the gun. Then pull the gun back into you until it touches your chest. This naturally puts your elbows straight out to each side. Then you just push the gun straight out to your presentation without changing how your arms are oriented (easier to demonstrate than describe). Held like that recoil pushes the gun into you, versus flipping the muzzle like it would in an elbow down grip. Naturally you don’t do these steps every time, it just illustrates how to orient your arms.
Great insights, thanks! I see some guys roll their elbows inward, others push them slightly up and outwards and I get some benefit from doing both … just paying attention to my elbows helps, I think. I can’t wait to try this one tomorrow. I’ll work it into dryfire tonight. Thanks for another thing to try … it sounds great.
I’m a small guy with small hands, and sometimes, especially with larger calibers, I have trouble managing recoil, not to mention I’m also learning how to use firearms. This video was great help, I’ll make sure to use t next time I go to the range.
Nice video, I'm always trying to find new ways to describe things to students. I currently use "lean into it like a you're throwing a punch or in a shoving match," but I like your " Fight!" emphasis while hands-on positioning. Subscribed.
So I watched this video a 2nd time prior to going out to shoot a couple of rounds and tried out these 2 tricks and they really do help. I had my back leg all the way back and my front leg fully forward. I leaned forward and torqued my left elbow so that my gun is canted a bit. And I've noticed as soon as I fired that my shots are more consistent and the only thing rocking back and fourth is my gun and not my body as if you were standing with your legs side to side. Also, I took your advice and got really agressive with it and really leaned forward even further as my left elbow is canting the gun a bit and found that my shots are even more spot on where ever I point my sights. So thank you very much for all your help and tricks and I look forward to your upcoming videos! :)
John, my shooting abilities just increased drastically entirely due to your video. I never type comments, but I just wanted to you to know how much you helped me. Thank you so much!
As a lady shooter, I can’t thank you enough for breaking down the attack mentality and the elbow rotation.

level of preparedness to attack. I don't even like calling it "defending" ----- as I see it--- when you are countering a deadly threat
your job is to become ( in a millisecond) the badest MF in the room-- so bad that you steam roller how ever many attackers/perps
are in need of your attention. They become YOUR hapless victim . I think a good forward aggressive posture is needed--- not
only for recoil control but also to be the beginning movement of some kind of dynamic movement. I see the goal is to be able
to move and shoot faster than you can identify targets. (hopefully ALL the targets are all ready confirmed before the opening
move). Anyway -- keep the great videos coming--- and keep innovating and distilling the inner and outer warrior way !
"This was helpful. I know it was" you crack me up man lol
John, I don't know what it is, but I could listen to you talk all day long. Just found your channel a week ago, can't get enough. Keep up the good vids, and thank you for your service to our great country sir.
4:27 One of the best explanations I’ve heard. “FIGHT. Defend.” Love it.
I love the free advice that you give on here !!!!!! Always helps and sometimes it's even funny
Ok...... LOVE the advice, but am distracted by the single gray hair on the beard...... ;-)
ugh I know
It's like having a booger hanging and your friend (in this case, camera operator) doesn't tell you until AFTER!!! Anyway, greatly appreciate the videos and faith!
John Lovell what holster do you use?
Sven Lara He has a video on the holster he uses
If you were looking at me you would be distracted by the fact that my moustache is mostly grey like my beard, but actually is growing from my nose! Yep all nose hair! Live with that and quit bitching! C. A. B. W.
I normally just read comments, but I'd really appreciate some impressions from your family if y'all are ever in SC. Much love for what you stand for. Really hit home with the family values.God bless
Where is the link to the grip video?
Nice. An added point I teach is rotating both elbows inside, This creates equal torque pressure on both side of the pistol. One is able to hold the pistol in a relaxed yet still maintaining firearm retention way.
Came for recoil management tips
Stayed for white beard hair comments....
Had not noticed the rebellious single white hair . . . now it's all I see!
Omg! I did not notice at first 🤣🤣😂😅
Your techniques as explained changed my life! Seriously
I've been jonesing for a new video lol. And this is great because I'm hitting the range after work!
hopefully with these tricks you can hit a target now, not just the range...
Tried this today and immediately saw the benefit of the engaged elbow. It really locks everything in place. Thanks for the great advice.
good stuff
Jip Pl what in the hell do you contribute? All I've seen of you at this point is bitching, so I guess that makes you the bitch of the gun community. Nothing but top notch content at Mr.gunsandgearchannel. don't watch it though itd go over your head
Mrgunsngear Channel your videos are good stuff too!!!
Sheesh someone seems a little triggered! If you get that mad over someone saying "good stuff" I bet you live in a van down by the river!
@Jip Pl complaining about a grown man saying "good stuff".
U want to talk about it?
Hi
Watched this after a mediocre range session and tried it today. Made a real difference already. Thanks!
This is pure gold!
I find myself coming back to your videos. Great timeless quality
7:00 - Jedi John Lovell: "This Was helpful"
7:02 - Me: Man this was helpful.
The guidance that you provided here is a huge help to me, especially rolling the elbows inward...thank you!!
What light are you running on that Glock? Fantastic tips.
+D Wallace this one amzn.to/2tRys4h
John, the link is blocked due to the net-nanny software at work (yup, I'm bored - watching YT). What is the make/model? Thanks!
+DHC45 inforce apl
D Wallace check out Olight Valkyrie PL-2. I have them on my glocks. Cheaper and extremely bright 1200 lumens
As a new shooter just falling into the Rabbit Hole, you are easily my favorite teacher!!!! Thank you!
"So you're ready to FIGHT!!!...you're ready to defend...." 🤣🤣🤣
Super helpful. Being of short stature with small hands, I really needed some help...this video really helped me. Thank you!
A well groomed lethal librarian!
That tweak the elbow in thing. Pretty slick John, pretty slick. It worked wonders for me.
are your irons on backwards or just painted for a reason??
+Vincent Wilkes my rear iron is on backwards! GREAT eye, I'm so impressed. I did it because the rear side of the site is sharper and causing my shirts to get holes faster when I'm practicing my draw. Running the sights this way makes no difference because of the rmr and relative height of the suppressor sights
Ah ok. I thought maybe for a second it could help finding your gun in the dark if they are painted on both sides!
Perceptive!
I'd need about 3-5 minutes to get you setup and you'd be good to go
2nd Chance
John could you expand on that? so am I....
Me during the intro: he’s not shooting that fast...
Me again: oh, that was slow mo. Never mind
Hahahaha
Mag dump
Great insights, thanks! I see some guys roll their elbows inward, others push them slightly up and outwards and I get some benefit from doing both … just paying attention to my elbows helps, I think. I can’t wait to try this one tomorrow. I’ll work it into dryfire tonight. Thanks for another thing to try … it sounds great.
I'm cross eyed dominant, could you make a video on how to present being cross eyed dominant?
Check out trex arms their video on it is the best I have found and it talks about side arm as well as primary weapons
Practice keeping both eyes open & high viz sights also help.
I’m a small guy with small hands, and sometimes, especially with larger calibers, I have trouble managing recoil, not to mention I’m also learning how to use firearms. This video was great help, I’ll make sure to use t next time I go to the range.
John, your good looks offend me.
I will punch myself for my intolerance and to change my looks.
John Lovell , Thats all I ask.
Shawn Awesome 😂 Both of you are fine, men.
Gay
What if I told you, it should had been you're?
Nice video, I'm always trying to find new ways to describe things to students. I currently use "lean into it like a you're throwing a punch or in a shoving match," but I like your " Fight!" emphasis while hands-on positioning. Subscribed.
Your hair is absolutely amazing sir:)
+Tony Hagarman its priorities. I almost practiced shooting more, but the hair was the better investment... ;)
Also if you ever teach a class in Columbus, Ohio or anywhere in Ohio I'm there
That's John, that torque elbow did it for me. Took a few times to feel it right but I got it.
What's the best caliber for carry and home defense? 9mm, .40, or .45? Interested in what caliber you carry. Keep up the great videos
20gauge or 5.56!
if I must use a pistol than 9
*then 9
The best caliber is the one you practice with.
Honostly i would chose 40 . But if he says 9 its 9 😂
.460 s&w. Or maybe 22 ratshot! Which ever caliber you are most proficient with and most confident in your abilities is the best!
Grip is the main thing I'm working on. Thanks for the 'elbow' tip to help with that.
Thought he was going to say, “...and some of you Ladies, you’re huge.” Haha
I know XD
John, my shooting abilities just increased drastically entirely due to your video. I never type comments, but I just wanted to you to know how much you helped me. Thank you so much!
