  • I just picked up ANOTHER boat project and OF COURSE it's a fast race boat because why would I ever own anything practical, useful, or safe. This video will introduce you to my newest project boat, a homemade 3 point Racing Hydroplane, called a Mini Max or Sea Flea! These boats were made popular in the 1950s and 1960s when their plans were published in DIY Magazines, and allowed almost anybody to build a fun, fast boat with just a few sheets of plywood and a couple weekends!
Check out this pretty rad documentary about the designer of this boat here:
    • The Life Of William D ...
It's only 8 feet long and about 4 feet wide, but this little thing should hit 40-50mph when properly set up, and the sensation of speed being only inches from the water should make it seem like 100mph. Although it's in pretty great conditions, there are a couple things I want to do to it before I get her wet; watch the video for my plans on refinishing the hull with a trick graphite and epoxy coating to reduce drag, and rebuild the steering area to improve the aesthetics.
Hopefully watching this will help convince people to tackle their own boat restorations; it's dirty work sometimes but it's not too complex or challenging, so please leave a message if you have any questions and I'll try to help.
If you liked this video or learned something, please check out some of my other videos and stay tuned for updates to the SST project!

She seems like a smart one, and I'm not talking about the boat!

You are, either one of the most creative and daring repair engineers, or a glutton for punishment. Either way, it's all fun! Thanks for sharing this adventure.

I had something similar as a boy, 10 HP Johnson maybe? Didn't have the cool tunnel hull tho, more of a shallow-V type thing. Thanks for the video and the memories. Oh, and wear knee pads - top tip.

What kind of mount/rack is the boat sitting on? I need one to redo my hydroplane.

Just finishing up on building one sort of that style. It's a 8 foot 3 point hydroplane. Fast little boats with the right motor

What did you finish the hull with? FG resin? Epoxy? Or what?

@@ADDvanced I actually used 2 coats of fiber glass resin and then a 2 part Marine paint that's at least 20yrs old but seems ok. My father use the West Epoxy building and repairing boats and that's the way go . Seal the wood with a coat and mix epoxy with sawdust to fill any holes then it will be water proof and just use a regular oil based rust pant any color. Coating it with fiber glass resin with paint brush will waterproof the wood the same. Cost me 60 bucks at Walmart Really Epoxy is super strength for building wood parts. Fiber glass will flex Epoxy does not want to. Kinda confusing I know. Lol

That would be a Very Early motor if it had the fuel tank on the cowling. Most if not all 50's racing outboards have a remote fuel tank. I have built several Mini Max's, the Sea Flee is nothing like the MM, the Sea Flee was designed to be built using 2 sheets of plywood and a 10foot long clear1x8. I have built over a dozen of them and powered them with anything from 5hp to 25hp outboards. The MiniMax is a totally different toy.

might well be possible that in the old setup the steering wheel was horizonal and stuck through the deck

Yeah, I think the gas tank and pyramid was added later tho. Different construction materials and fasteners.
