- In this video I try to beat Half Life 1 without taking damage. I disabled the healing of the med kits and then lowered my health to 1. If I take any damage I die. Can I beat the game with this handicap? Watch the video to find out.

_Finally kills headcrab he died to several times._
_Immediately saves._
Same, bro.
Nothing wrong with save scumming
Gordon is just sprinting around Black Mesa, bleeding to death and a stiff breeze away from keeling over, and yet. Still does better than anyone else in that building at containing the Xen invasion. What a guy.
just goes to show how incompetent the HECU, Black Mesa Security, and even the Black Ops soldiers are at their jobs when some random MIT graduate with an orange suit and a crowbar just baps 'em
@@Maxim_Moldovo Black ops did fufill their mission (nuking Black Mesa)
@hart418 yeah, but only because G-Man undid Shepard's work
half life if HECU was aiming for the head
half life if the protagonist wasn't superhuman for gameplay's sake
@@LJay205Kid named “the HEV suit”
true lol
To be honest, that's pretty realistic to how many times an average person would die, had they been thrown to Black Mesa.
That's true
It would be neat to see an edited-together shot of the whole run. The Flawless Take.
I also wanted to see a spliced run
Saw the the title and immediately thought "he'll never get passed the freezer section" and then did the guy spitting cereal meme when you actually completed this challenge. Great video, loved the Opposing Force music
Considering it still DAMAGES the player if they have more than 1 hitpoint, I'd say it's still not possible. This is more of a 1-HP run rather than a full on no-damage run.
@@jessegd6306 It only damages armor
I loved the black into back mesa HLVRAI reference XD
Reference
Fun Fact: in Surface Tension (or any chapter with an Icthyosaur and some room), you can get the Icthyosaur to swim up under you and take you to the surface. it will be locked in place for as long as you stand on it, and if you jump, the Icthyosaur raises a little. So by spamming the jump button, you can levitate.
I have steam version and the fish literally always get glitched when they try to attack me. Not sure how to explain it by their attack sound plays over and over and even if I stand still they don’t hit me. The heli in surface tension also always crashes itself before I can shoot it down
Thats the most realistic halflife playthrough ever
very interesting challenge run video, commentary isnt too overbearing with annoying attempts at humour, the music is just the right volume and the actual challenge is pretty neat.
Thanks!
I loved the multiple fighting death's with that one failed jump death with no explanation, then back to even more combat deaths, 10/10 video
Thank you!
Headcrabs. “Kinda annoying” he says, there the bane of your existence. They’re annoying even when you’ve got 100% health.
I KNEW that yay sound effect would play once you hit 1000 deaths. I KNEW IT!
If Gordon Did not use the HEV suit This will happen..
"Black into Back Mesa" caught me off guard! Nice reference, my fellow scientist!
For the fan room I’m pretty sure there’s a small death wall as a way to try and teach new players to turn off the power before trying to get the loot. But since the wall isn’t actually big enough it doesn’t 100% work
Wait, does turning off the power turn the fan off too. It makes sense but I always go to the fan first.
so many moments that I thought they were impossible not to get damage. Great video!
Thanks you!
Freezer is impossible to not get damaged
@@JohnNash-lt1ny i know, but uploader started with 1 hp as his rule, and i didn't know that you don't die in the freezer like that. But i was thinking about a lot of other places in the video:D
@@MisuAlexandru1 Do you lose health if you are above 1?
@@MisuAlexandru1 fair enough. I can’t get past any combat section in this game without getting damaged so no hate from me. Every damn head crab in this game hits me once before it dies lol
Shutting the light switch in the water room in office complex will shut off the fan in the vents that kept killing you. Not sure if you knew this already. Also 9:28 "make it black into back mesa" made me laugh. Also, to your ending point, you absolutely CAN soft lock your game if you quick save at a really bad spot with low health. Like saving right as a headcrab attacks from behind, leaving you no time to avoid it when you load your save. You only proved that it's possible to not soft lock your game if you are careful with your quick saves, or are lucky enough for it not to cause a problem. However, just reloading the last autosave solves the issue, albeit costing up to an hour of game play, causing you to have to replay some sections.
Quicksaving right before you die is the worst
would it be possible to load an earlier save right before you die to them?
@@galladegamerletsplays well yes of course. Not everyone thinks ahead like that though lol most people keep a single save slot and just overwrite it whenever they save the game. Always keep multiple saves if the game allows for it for this very reason
Had only watched from you the crowbar only run around the time it came out, recently re-watched it along with the crouch run, and boom new vid.
17:40 Looks like they really went to pieces after you rejected them.
Thank you as always for taking on a challenge I was mildly curious about but knew would probably begin to boil me alive not long into starting it. I'm sure my number of deaths would have hypothetically doubled yours, and I would have probably just quit after the first few hundred.
3:35 HL1 has weird behavior when it comes to corpses and moving map geometry like fans or those platforms around the generator in Blast Pit. For some reason if you're inside the corpse's "hitbox" i guess, while something like that is moving, you get instakilled. Dunno _why_ though.
the immediate save after killing that headcrab 🤣
This is just the way I always play Half Life. I find health, I do something stupid to lose all but a couple hp, then spend an hour repeatedly retrying a section until I get the super specific way of getting through without damage, repeat.
I kinda do the opposite. Play super careful, save scum to make it through most sections without losing more than x health. Find a massive stockpile of shields and health 2 corridors down
13:31 The way he simply stood there like "Oh, shit I'm gonna die" was hilarious to me
another banger video kazy
Save Scums became Save Necessities.
9:23 the reference is immaculate
you absolute madlad!
major props for trying this!
Thank you!
Ok at the 3ish minute mark. I have never seen a bullsquid hit that shot. Holy shit
Once you fire the test rocket motor in Blast Pit you get the fire damage symbol but dont get damage at least when low health. I just learned this this year I think, although I've played the game since 1998, I used to try to tuck my self in the further most corner to protect my self before xD. I guess they made so that you would not get soft locked from progression and the fire damage indicator is just for immersion it seems.
Nice run bro. Discovered your channel not too long ago but loving the vids man. Have a good day 👍🏻
We actually don't know if Gordon has weapons training, as he is American and considering our culture I imagine he wasn't unfamiliar
The grind might not have been fun, but the video sure was!
Thank you!
i have the impression half-life is named like that because you can't get to play the game to the end with more than 50 hp
Dang man, you beat me to it! I had finished recording footage through Gonarch, but I lost the recordings. I was considering reattempting the challenge, but then I saw this video! Great job! This challenge is no joke!
You should still do it! (If you have the patience to do it all over again)
damn i didn't know you were so underrated this content is golden and amazing bro ❤
Thanks so much!
"Just like the Vikings did it"
...with Glocks? ..actually, i'm not surprised, if the aliens gave them glocks, they basically would have been the hammer of god...
...*stargate conspiracy theory grows*...
13:54 what a "in your face" moment
(5:10)
You sure did pal, you sure did.
Really enjoyed watching this, have you tried opposing force with the same challenge goal???
Not yet but it's on my list!
20:03
Actually, I think that generator takes only ONE hit to break, it just doesn't kaboom immediately. If you listen, it starts doing the overload sound after the first shot but only explodes when the sound is finished, just like when you do it with the crowbar.
16:00 on this episode of "Ow my balls!"
commenting before a watch but i am looking forward to the Freezer Room
EDIT: Ohhhh interesting... the rules of the run (having 1 hp) makes the Freezer Room possible, since it cant kill. but if we were starting at 100 and just resetting every time we took damage, it wouldnt have worked in that instance. cool!
I guess Valve coded it so you can't die and softlock there.
22:27 nuh uh. he got like a minute of training in the black mesa hazard course
True. How could I be so foolish!?
@@KazyMatman that training was the best in the world. it got every scientist to become better than the US military. (they just dont know how to pick up guns, dont have the guts to shoot, or didnt have access to any)
i luv ur content broo
Thanks so much!
Turning off the guiding laser on the rocket launcher would make it easier to fight non-helicopters, like the tanks and the Gonarch.
Looks like a lot of pain
lovely video, thanks!
Thank you!
I would love to see a split run of all the good attempts and see how would look a complete no damage run.
Underated asf
I wonder if you can do the same in Black Mesa? Might be fun to compare the challenge between the two
One day
Half-life if Gordon Didn't wear the suit
YES THE NEW VIDEO!!!
I seem to recall the fan where you had your 33rd death had an overly big death trigger. IIRC it was a leftover from a differently sized vent. Not sure, could be my memory being shit again.
Half life 1 without plot armor
Why does this video not have more views?
Here a comment so the algorithm picks it up more easily
Ill also drop a like
Thanks for the support!
Nice aspect ratio, just feels right for half life 1
I came here to see how to avoid taking damage to the falling pipe lol
P.S. oh my GOD the snipers are the single worst thing in this game
Glad I could help!
This makes pistol starting plutonia looks easy
the gonarch fight is actually what made me never even complete the original half life
Really? It's not that bad in a casual run.
@@KazyMatman I don't know, it just really didn't vibe with me, maybe I'll give it another shot
The canon run
Didn't know soda vending machines can heal you. Nice video tho
Can you do the Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars campaigns without losing units/structures?
I've never actually played that game.
@@KazyMatmanits a game of mixed difficulty. Be sure to look up the original campaign difficulty fix in the discussions tab on steam. They would add balance patches which would make certain campaign missions stupid difficult because the multiplayer balancing applied to enemies in campaign. You'll know what i mean. Great game. Doubt the challenge is possible as you command squads and sometimes dont even get vehicles on certain missions so they will be vulnerable. Very bold of op to even think this is doable.
15:42 Grenade! 💥💥
A lot of it is also possible only using the crowbar too. Sometimes the soldiers end up getting killed by their own grenades and you an just wait them out, like at 22:48. Is it possible to beat half-life using only the crowbar without taking any damage?
I want to do a crowbar only run but I don't have the patience to combine challenges. Lol
Nice
After 9:27, there would have been a part where you right a tram in Blast Pit. It crashes and throws you into a toxic waste pool. Did you bunny hop past that section?
No. You can get off before it crashes and walk along the side on the right.
11:46 If you're doing chapter skips, why play through We've Got Hostiles? It's not too difficult to get onto the ledge with the chainlink fence in the first turret room then bait a headcrab into following you up. Simply jump off the headcrab like a step stool and you can climb over the fence and reach the vent at the very end of the chapter, skipping almost all of it. Granted this is probably a lot harder when you can't take a single hit from the headcrab, but I imagine it's much easier still than dealing with all the marines.
I'll keep this in mind for future challenges.
Is this possible for HL2 too? One would have to make an exception for the part where the car falls from the crane, obviously.
I'll try that game some day. I don't know when though
In source there's a command called
- hurt me "number"
Not sure if it's in gold src tho.
Don't try this in black Mesa, worst mistake of my life, so many quick save/load
does anyone know what song's playing in the clip at 8:50? I tried going through the soundtracks to HL1 and Opposing Force and couldn't find one that sounded like it, is it from HL2?
I think it's from episode 2
@@KazyMatman I found it, it's called Sector Sweep!
9:24 I got that reference.
9:24 black into back Mesa. I swear I heard those exact words before
It's from "Half Life but the AI is Self Aware".
9:19 'Black to Back Mesa'
Black in back, yes im black in back!
At 9:24 you said “ I make it black into back mesa” WHAT?!?
It's a reference to a UA-cam series. "Half Life VR but the AI is Self Aware" It's funny, you should watch it.
how did u make it through the snark vent
3:56 Wait, soda can heal you?
yes if you click the buttons. 1 can of soda equals 1 hp. But if you break the machine the soda's that spill out dont, as far as I can remember in the original version at least.
@@kala1780 Yea, I ended up testing that and figuring it out. Thanks though 😊
2:30
Final boss
I refuse to believe this is Gordon. Hes super cool and doesnt afraid of anyone. This guy is ivan the space biker. The beard hides his 1 hp 0 armor glass jaw.
honestly, if we try to look at it objectively, residue processing is worse than on a rail
Honestly, I agree. Residue is much slower than On a Rail with less weapons. I probably hate Interloper the most though. 🤔
@@KazyMatman I don't understand why Crobar Collective cut most of On a Rail but left unchanged the in my opinion worst parts from Residue Processing
12:39 did he just say he needs some acid?
5:22 yeah its also kinda square
9:24 I make it black into Back Mesa
yes
You do know you can close that shield in front of Blast Pit to avoid taking any damage from the tentacles or fire at all. And you could have skipped We've Got Hostiles! completely.
I did try to skip "We've Got Hostiles" but I wasn't able to. I didn't try very hard but still.
20:00 you need just one shot!)))
legitimately playing half life on 1hp is my favourite way to play lol
and yup, it really shows how absolutely atrocious the headcrab placement is in this game most of the time
Like a real man.
@@erikpng which is funny because i'm not a man
@demon-goat then be a man. Idk. Or like a real woman too. Sure.
5:23 because it's not a barrel
why dont you play on 1920x1080 resolution?
The fan at death 32 is annoying af. Pretty sure it’s impossible to grab that ammo
I had to break the body first
Who let Bird Person play Half Life 😭
20:05 no, it takes 1 shot at the big red top part of the gate. Wasted ammo ;)
So is it possible to do it without taking damage? so next challenge is to do it without actually dying a single time then to prove your point, die a single time equals reset game ;)
I don't have the patience for that. LOL
@@KazyMatmancoward
Yeah It's possible, just play Sven Co-Op with multiplayer, server Die-Hard
How much patience do you have?
1474 times
Really impressive, but why
Science isn't about why, it's about why not!
Also, views 🤫
black into back mesa??????
There's a series on UA-cam called "Half Life VR but the AI is Self Aware" and they say that at that part.
Is dude playing HL: Source?
No it's base half life
@@KazyMatman Oh, I was wondering because the physics look a bit more buggy.
Why you always trying to conserve ammo when you have hundreds of rounds?
Always been a habit of mine. Never want to waste supplies even when there's more than enough.
