The Retro Future I would enjoy a SNES video for a home console but I also wanted to comment because I am kid and I get made fun of because I enjoy retro games more than newer games like red dead 2 or Fortnite and I like both of those games my brother has red dead 2 on his xbox so I got see him play it and it looks fun and of course I have played Fortnite but your video on the pocket go made me really really want a pocket go and I saved up and got one! But I just wanted to say thanks for the great content I really enjoy old retro games but whenever I find a retro related video their channel is always not retro related AT ALL so I am a really big fan even though I’ve only been subscribed since SomethingElseYT made the video of his DS LITE but thanks for making really good content.
For anybody looking to get into repairing and cleaning retro consoles, the original Game Boy is a great place to start. It's easy to take apart, the inside is very simple, and it's unlikely that you would break anything. Nice work, Elliot!
Game Game I’d rather start with a game color or pocket, cause my first console I opened up was an advance sp then a color then pocket and the the original. I find that color and pocket were a lot less complicated as they only had 1 mother board... but yeah, that’s just my opinion tho
@@OutrideMaro You're not wrong! It's definitely simpler to only deal with one motherboard, and aside from that, the process is pretty similar to a DMG. So yeah, pretty much anything in the Game Boy/Color/Advance line shouldn't give you too much of a challenge.
I just bought a bunch of High Quality Replacement Labels for the Game Boy DMG-01 Console in this video from a seller on eBay named Game Boy Color Man. He has every single replacement label for every Game Boy, Pocket, Color, Light, Advance, Advance SP, Micro N64, and SNES! For this DMG-01, he has the Battery Door Label, Serial Number Label, and Bar Code Label. And they are top quality American Made! Nothing like the toilet paper quality you'll find from other sellers that sell Chinese labels. The dude is awesome! The labels look fantastic and fit perfectly down to the millimeter. The packaging is amazing, and the dude also threw in a whole bunch of free kick ass Dishwasher Safe Die Cut Stickers! Check out his store if your Game Boy looks beat up and needs new labels! Or if you just need a smile put on your face. Honestly the coolest eBay purchase I ever made! He even ships to all 50 states and the Entire Globe! Look at this on eBay ebay.com/usr/gameboycolorman
I've just turned on my own Gameboy from 1989. Not played it in over 25 years. It worked straight away. God they knew how to make lasting handheld consoles back then
I just found my dmg Gameboy up my parents loft, guna restore it just like this. I'm 32 and wanting to relive the nostalgia and restore all my old games. Great vid
Even tho I’ve seen that many of these dmg restorations I still always find myself watching them as I’ve done a few myself and always find them satisfying and makes me wanna do sum more of these projects
Im looking into buying one of these because as a kid i used to have one and this video will greatly help me because its also the intention of cleaning it up nicely, great vid and you have a new sub!
Just bought the non dx version of links awakening and reliving my childhood on GBA I modded with the AGS 101 screen! You've really inspired my to try and fix some old tech I've got round the house, like an old Sony minidisc player and an oldish iPod touch that needs some soldering! Keep up the great work!
Duuuude the the camera angles and the music during reassembly... that was sooo fucking relaxing to watch. Amazing refurb work. Link's awakening for the GB also on my personal top 10 games of all time.
Could you go over how your PO box works. If I send you things do you return them ever? Charge for repairs? Love the channel- what you are doing is the future for everything electronic not just retro gaming. Superb.
It is a good idea to wipe dry the alcohol with a clean dry qtip. Hard to tell in the videos if you are. Doing this gets the PCB cleaner and collects more of the grime before it dries again. Not that it is really going to hurt anything but it is good practice.
Elliot you should offer this as a service and start making some money on the side restoring these for people who don't feel confident doing it themselves, call the company "Retro Restorations" ;)
great video. Love all those sexy B roll shots of the cleaning and taking it apart. I too am enjoying Links Awakening on the Switch. Getting back into it tonight
Apologies if you have covered this in another video, but do you have any recommendations of a supplier of replacement lenses for the original Gameboy? Got one that I am restoring and the original lens is pretty beat up. Thanks in advance!
I would recommend finding the most accurate one on eBay, and I would recommend glass, as it won't scratch or shatter as easily as the one that's already on there. Just don't clean it with isopropyl alcohol. It'll damage the paint. I'd recommend Windex
I have two game boys that seem similar to this one but isn't working could you restore them. Where would I have to mail it to you and how much would it cost. Thanks
Hey TRF can you make a video looking inside the analog stick (the design flaw/ the blue thing that makes it work and drift) just open that metal thing and you’ll see. If you don’t want to/ can’t it’s ok 👍
make sure all fully screen line and turn down and up of small wheel contrast what you can see if little line fix again fully and clean of fully no yellow of body game boy 1989 :)
I'm trying to fix the lines on mine I worked for two hours trying to get them to work but they won't any recommendations? I went over and over it with my solder but nothing
You Didt a great job on this NGB, i have two banged up laying around here, by seeing this video opening them up and check it would not be that hard. Or do more damage to them (they dont boot up with batteries in it and i dont have a charger for it so i dont know if they realy work or not. Got them for free with a stack of games so not complaning :) SNES and SEGA MegaDrive cleaning video would be apriciated. :)
I'm pleased it came up so well, believe it of not it's not the dirtiest one I've found (I actually found one with a dead cockroach inside it) I'll give you a shout If I find any more for you Great editing by the way!
Hey Elliot, dont remember if I've asked this, but have you ever tried Polywatch to buff out an old plastic GB screen lens? It's an extremely mild abrasive that has worked for me on lightly scratched plastic lenses. Think it works on glass also. Never tried on a GB though.
N64 PLEASE! i had a one when i was a kid given to me by my cousin and i think i split liquid in it so seeing inside may help me to recover the old thing
they're really not that hard to find as long as you get around. I have two - an immaculate boxed grey one that was £40 from a charity shop in one place in 2016, and an unboxed also-immaculate translucent blue one that was £50 from a Cash Converters in another place in 2018/2019. I had previously thought about buying one from a market stall I was at in France (of all places) in 2009 but didn't go ahead and buy it, but nowadays I suggest trying to buy one as soon as you can!
Your videos are great dude. Got a question for ya, just bought a GameBoy myself but the screen has a couple of faulty horizontal lines. Is fixing them as easy as the vertical ones?
I actually fixed a DMG that wouldn't turn on, so that it would. It's perfectly functional (mind the horizontal line. Ugh.) I'm getting a new, black shell for it. I'm going to be making a video on the process

Please do another/better backlit pocket please.
Can I use a rechargeable battery on the gameboy?

Yay!
Where to get LCD for GB?

Changed the screen on an iphone 6s and the camera module on an iphone 5 before... easier or harder than this?
youre making me want to buy old game boys and repair them
Doing it !

Ooooooh 4 matching batteries this time 😳
Marc P. There’s actually two different types!
@@TheRetroFuture I only see 4 identical Energizer AA types 🤔
Marc P. Oh never mind yeah you’re right!
Really, it doesn't matter which console you do next, it's always a blast to watch your restorations, no matter which console or electronics you do.
Thanks!
Great camera work :-) The GameBoy turned out so clean, also nice tip with the soldering iron on the screen :-)
Thanks Vince!
The soldering iron on the screen is old news, I had it done to mine in 2016
@@RWL2012 no body asked.

My grandma got this exact one and its in a very good condition! Works fine and colors of the gameboy look great
I love these videos. This isn't just restoration of a Gameboy, it is preservation of video game history. It is video game archaeology.
Every time I see you do a GB restoration, I'm always tempted to try it myself.
Good job :)
Absolutly love the cut-style of this video! Thank you for your nice conent, hope you keep going :) much love from germany dude
I just found my dmg Gameboy up my parents loft, guna restore it just like this. I'm 32 and wanting to relive the nostalgia and restore all my old games. Great vid
Well that super dramatic close up of some screws being nipped up was an experience 😅

Awesome video again... love to watch these... keep up the good work.

I just cleaned my dmg from childhood and it turned on after the IPA treatment - great content !!!
Really nice to see you do one of these again. Very satisfying to watch. Many thanks.
You’re welcome!

I love that he’s wearing his Tiger electronic wrist watch.
This is the most therapeutic thing I've ever watched.
Yes!!
I'm loving those Macro Lens Shots.
I have not seen a single comment about the sinc between the audio and the montage, realy nice.
I would love to see a Gameboy micro .. love your videos
a super nintendo repair would be aweseome. I just got one and could use some tips and tricks on how to keep it looking like new.

Finding a Game Boy with a battery cover is like finding a DS with its stylus; whether it be aftermarket or OEM.

great video. Love all those sexy B roll shots of the cleaning and taking it apart.

I wouldn't mind some home console repairs. I think you should start with Famicom/NES, as those are most likely to need repair.
Yes! The OG gameboy repairs! Love your vids! This is very, VERY nice!
Biggest achievement yet,
4 batteries from the same company
9:10 I never knew that part even existed!
I'd like to see a Wii repair 😅
What glue would you use to get the screen lense back in place?
Let it sink in that That thing is 30 years , and most likely older than most People in the comment section
Nice video, I particully loved the video editing! Good work
What exact product do you use to polish the metal shielding???
Trying to put a back light into a Gameboy being an absolute nightmare so far
I waited so long for one of these ☺️great video my personal gameboy also have that plastic cover over the cable connector
Enjoy!
what you said about how Links Awakening on Switch is essentially the same game is exactly why I think 60 bucks is way over-priced.
Ahhh they are all overpriced! Great remake though.

Delicious restoration

My gameboy I took inside out and bought new case looks great now 👍
4:24 You uah.. want to tell us what temp you Did set it to so we dont melt the the ribbon?
Just bought a DMG myself which needs a strip down and clean.
i found my 1989 gameboy but batteries were left in and with new batteries it will not turn on...any suggestions
thanks

what is the temp for the welder? 100C or less? because i use it to solder at about 260 ° c
Damn dude impressive how you made that gameboy look so good 😬
Recently I got a game boy color, so seeing this makes me dopamine chemical.

Is there a difference in the black Cartridge vs the gray cartridge?!?
