- I bought this Nintendo Game Boy off of eBay for spares or repairs. The listing stated it turned on but didn't load any games.
Can I Fix it?!
Hope you enjoy!
Steve
PS. I'm not an expert in repairs at all. I do this for fun, and it may not be the best or safest way to go about repairing broken stuff. I'm pretty good at melting plastic though. Please don't copy me - I'm an idiot.

My favorite thing about this channel is that, you show how easy it is to do everything right and still have it not work.
When I get my own job I'll try to fix so many things!
Spoiler alert....
Missed opportunity.... "I'm blue daba dee daba da"
GET IN THERE!! 😁😁😂
Great fix. Looked like a very satisfying one to work through.
Loved the video!
😁😁 Thanks Lee, much appreciated! 👍
Never seen a damaged gameboy like that ! You are not lucky with your purchases but we are lucky to have a video on it so keep buying junk consoles for our pleasure 😜😂
Thanks KoSlow! I really like doing these trace repair ones, so I'm pleased with the purchases. Obviously I don't know what I'm gonna get when I buy them, but that's part of the fun! 😁
You are a braver and more patient man than I. I just go to my Gameboy parts drawer instead of fixing a board.
10:25 best laugh ever . Keep the good work :)
😂😂 thanks Froz!
The closing music, the only reason I give it a like!
Nice fix, thankfully there was a lot less wrong with my NES. Someone had cut the IRQ line and rejoined it, but was unaware they had cut the next line. Once I realised the extent of the damage, I just added another wire and it booted a game just fine.
Great work Steve. Your repair skills are growing fast.
What is the make and model of the UV timer light.
Thanks John. Not sure if it's a generic one, but it's from repair outlet. This one: repairoutlet.co.uk/collections/uv-lamps/products/qianli-portable-iuv-intelligent-curing-lamp
I was wondering what that device was, so thanks for saying :)
The ONLY problem i have with this channel is that i need more vids! As always, great stuff
Great fix Steve! We love your channel and let's hope we get a chance to insult sword fight and beat the sword master again in the new Return to Monkey Island!!!! CAN'T WAIT!!
Yep, genuinely can't wait! It's gonna be awesome! 😍
Another great video, o how I do miss my old GB, have to try and convince the wife that the kids really need one
🤣 your kids definitely need one, Morten! 😁
Steve is the type of guy you love for his singing skills and just appreiate he can fix about anything.
Love all of your videos! and the music you use in them!...especially - Don't Leave Yet! (feat. Lil Demi') love the instrumental
I love how toy story was a odd font for Nintendo and Mario turned it into alien language
You can also get new slap on plastic covers for the display from eBay.
Bit late to this one, but really enjoyed it :) Fantastic work Steve!
Thanks dude! 👍
"Just blanks, there's no projectile!"
Proceeds to stick a pencil in, giving it a projectile
I'm just binging vids now... Love your work!
WOW that's some water damage. Another one with serious water damage.
Have you considered a dedicated little brush for your solder mask? Like a nail polish brush or something? Ooh, could you keep the mask in an opaque nail polish bottle??
Funnily enough, next weeks video features a little solder mask brush! But I do like the nail polish bottle idea! 👍
Battery Juice I would guess.
Steve I didn’t think you were going to fix this game boy but I was wrong well done sir get in there 👍👏👏thanks for your video see you next time 👍😊
That Laugh I love to hear the joy in it.
OMG!!! This is the first game I played in my gameboy when I was a kid!!! Good job~
Very nice! Don't look at me I am hideous. Nice job indeed
😁 thanks WanJockey! 👍
@10:27 laughing like Palpatine... something's going on here...
Like your videos ! Subscribed, keep up the nice work ✌️
Cheers from Marseille - France
Thanks Bruno, much appreciated! 👍
Coper oxide is blue. This baby got some moisture on it
That was my old game boi. I fed it blue food dye into the cartridge slot because I was out of red. I was playing an April fool's joke. On my game boy. I got it really good. It was expecting me to put in a cartridge, but I put in the dye instead. I recorded it, and put it up on UA-cam so everyone could make fun of it. Because my game boy made fun of me in highschool, and I wanted to get back at it.
Something I should mention when checking continuity. It's sometimes not enough to only be checking if it has a complete circuit. You also have to pay attention to the resistance value. Ideally it should be as close to 0 as possible. Between .1 and .4 Ohms is acceptable on a circuit with no load components. A very high resistance value can be an indicator of a problem. Because it doesn't allow the proper amount of voltage to supply the components with what they need. But sometimes certain circuits can have a specific resistance value to be within a range. This is good for checking coil windings. Corrosion is one of the biggest contributors to high resistance
I measured brandnew mainvoltage switches having 0.3 ohm resistance while the leads of the multimeter themselves even show 0.1 ohm resistance.. What do you mean by 0.1 to 0.4 ohm is "acceptable"?
❤️ great vid as always
That piece of tin foil on the back is supposed to be there. Not sure what it does, but I think it'd shielding. The Americans are obsessed by shielding, where, here in the UK we can take it of leave it. That is why the Amiga had so much metal inside of it. It was totally unnecessary, but the Americans loved it.
wild guess: it's for heat dispersion (the thin metal sticker)
Just found you channel & loving the content 👌
Nice work mate 👏🏻👍🏻
Cheers mate! 👍
I'm a new subscriber as of today for reasons unknown the UA-cam bot overlord recommended one of your videos after the one I was watching. I am hooked! Out of interest do you do console mods like for Dreamcast and Playstation 1? I am 40 next yeat (gasp) so am I child of the Amiga in the UK. Do you have any fix videos for the lovely Amiga?
Lovely to see a smile on your face. 💕
Oh great singing by the way your getting better at that to bro
Great job getting it working. That board has suffered from a battery leak, the board is still contaminated, the whole thing should be washed, the traces are still being munched on....
Battery leak of course, Ive seen the blue gel before and couldnt think what it was, but obvious to me now.
Could I ask something about the blue stuff that was scraped off? When you removed it and tested the central points for continuity, why did you then have to rewire the traces on the board? I was assuming the fix would be to repair/replace whatever the central connector was.
I'm only really here for the song at the end
🤣🤣
Youre really talented well done
Nice work, You can use vinegar on electronics?
Lol so funny love your video mate....nice save you may want to mod it for a video lol give it a go mate lol see you on the next one..cheers mate
Thanks Roger, yeah I'd like to put a new screen in it at least 👍
Fun Fact: If the original Gameboy detects a fake cartridge...or if the contacts are dirty it will corrupt the Nintendo boot text and prevent the game from loading.
This doesn't sound true. If that was the case there wouldn't be any fake cartridge's.
I know absolutely nothing about electrical engineering and circuit boards. Can someone explain to me what that blue stuff is? Some product of copper corrosion? It‘s such a pretty colour!
I found my old big game boy recently, and besides having 10-20 year old batteries doing their thing leaking the battery connectors into ruin, it still works.
Mostly. A or maybe two adjacent lines on the display are dead. And they are in the inner third of the display. Sadness was had.
When the lines are vertical it is easy to repair. There are Tons of Videos how to repair this, you only need a soldering Iron, no soldering is required, you need only the heat.
love your videos!
I can’t believe you said that you never owned one hour’s of Tetris missed 😮
The rubles conversion lololol
😂
Holy hand grenade? Is that a Monty Python reference?
That was AWESOME!
could you list all fluids and tools you have used?
Awesome skills.
I guess in this case it's short for "damaged".
*great song* by the way
Great video
Thanks Jayden! 👍
I like your humor :D
Love your video.❤️❤️
Love watch your video. Would you able to fix my game boy? Its missing the screen cover! Please let me know.
Nice
SullDaBull made me subscribe.
This is what exactly happened to mine
What is the green stuff you use
Love the t shirt
was the video output kinda messed up?
I really need mine fixt and clean or I'll throw it away and try to get one expensive
I order a old Gameboy that was 115.00 box but it had 56% off I think there shit me cause the Gameboy barely works some games works some don't plus is little dirty should I throw it away or fixt it I don't have all the kit to fixt it but I try to find a cheeper cause Amazon have them in 180 box some even 220 box but there dirty
Like all your videos
Is that water damage?
Surely you noticed something that major the first time round?
Looks like that one should be trash, why a giant piece of copper inside?
Not sure, I thought it was meant to be there as some kind of interference barrier or something. First time I've been in one, so don't know if it's supposed to be there though! 😬
I might as well say it "Niccccccese.... "
😁 thanks M m!
It's blue daba-di-daba-da!
You are a god!
what does dmg mean
That was a lot of work for a gameboy that just needed a bit of a blow
Could I send my atari lynx to you so can fit a McWill mod? 😆
I like this channel more than other repair channels I've seen.
watching your stuff feels like just sitting in a room with your mate talking as you work on stuff. other channels cut out all the good stuff. lol
Nice one Steve, so much blue! Lovely colour though. Also sporting a new UV light, very fancy 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Vince! Yeah, the UV light is cracking. So much better (and quicker!) than the torch 👍
Where did you get the uv light from?
These fixes are so satisfying! Thanks for bringing life back to these devices.
The UA-cam algorithm recommended you to me and I've been loving watching your vids. You have such a great personality for this, and I never thought I would enjoy watching someone repair electronics, but yet, I'm on the edge of my seat with you! Thanks for brightening my day!
Nice one, Steve! You are truly developing skills in micro soldering! Amazing! And the now traditional/classic "stupid game!" at the end, with the right soudtrack song! Nice show, buddy!😁😁😁
🤣🤣 thanks Pedro!
Your videos are really well made, its not about having a totally fleshed out lab or some fancy stuff but more about the basics. This makes the videos really enjoyable, something I can easily subscribe to.
Or you could've just bought mine I sold on eBay about 2 years ago...almost fully working for £26...but then there'd be no video to upload...oh...there was a slight screen vertical line of missing pixels at left edge...didn't notice hardly just a mm less visible picture...wouldn't have made an interesting video...
'That should work now' ... 'I made it worse, HOW!?' So relatable!! Glad the algorithm recommended you to me. Loving your content!!
Sorry. That just looks like the missing connections just need a slight more solder. That’s it. From my observation, the rings is connected, no need to make a new trace. (I stopped at 6:20)
I just found your channel about three days ago, it's so relaxing to watch your videos, have an awesome day!
Hmm.. Interesting Brother Steve! Toy story 2 was made by Mintendo - Mario-land was made by a bunch of mixed up, garbled pipes & tubes.
I see what you did there & if you pause around 0:56 Steve! Tells us what the GB is going to do' John travoltage style - Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin' alive 😂🤣
Oh Steve! Dr. Bunsen Honeydew got in touch, He wants his' Beaker back when your done with it 😂 That GB screen sucks! now that doses need changing 👍🏻
🤣 Thanks brother Steve! Glad you noticed the deliberate stayin' alive dance! I should've done that as my outro song 😁. Yeah, the screen is awful. Will be trying to pick up an IPS for it, for sure! 👍
I also noticed the use of the Muppet! throughout the lovely video content ☺
@@StezStixFix ❤🩹
These consoles are so cool! A concrete brick of a console. I have got 2 of those:) The earliest, produced 89 consoles, have philips screws, not triwing by the way.
Again. Your work is so tidy, and your videoes are so well produced. Just a joy to watch:-) A giant shame that you don`t have more subs, but it will come:-)
Thanks Willy, really appreciate that! 👍
I hated electronics back in college, but you made me wanna go back and study it all over again, salute!
That's Neptun in different timelines and positions. Looks like it had a bad start formation.
I've still got mine in the loft sadly water damaged ...
As a little kid (probably 89/90s I dropped it in the bath whilst playing it
To my surprise it actually worked
So, silly me assumed (aged 7 or so) though, "oh, they are waterproof"
😔
Yup, found put the hard way that they aren't.
Didn't have the heart 💔 to tell my parents as it was only months old at the time.
Great video, can’t beat watching old tech getting fixed! This Gameboy was the first model I ever played, So it was even better to watch!
Man I love the clack when the cartridge slides in and out of the cartridge slot. It's so mechanical, so visceral. So satisfying.
Nice fix btw. I'm surprised the game boy still worked even with a big hole in one of the nodes
To think around 20 years ago i threw one of these out in basically perfect condition. Nowadays $30 for a broken one.
UA-cam recommended me this video and I'm starting to feel like youtube knows me better than I know myself cause I enjoyed every minute and even gave a sub 🤣.
Wish I could get my 1080 looked at and possibly fixed by someone sent it in for RMA and they wouldn't fix it. It was still under warranty so I refused to pay for the fix. Now it just collects dust cheers going to go binge watch some more of these.
What probably happened was you didn't connect ribbon cable from the front to the back correctly. I've done it before and it would do stuff like that
Good shout, Victor! You may well be right 👍
I really need to beat the sword master (again) before the new sequel drops.
Sequel!? I had no idea, amazing!
I had no idea, this is the most amazing news i've heard!!! 😍
I cannot describe how appreciative I am for discovering your channel lately!
l paid. £30. For. A. Faulty. DMG. Game. Boy. Let’s. Try. And. Fix. It. !
