The driver that crashed at 38:33 (Leo Hess) sustained serious but non life threatening injuries. Broken femur, shattered knees and 2 broken ankles. It took him over 9 months to start walking again. He owns a Harley fab shop in my home town Sioux Falls SD.
And he'd jump back in one tomorrow right? 😊
Nobody cares!
@@luliluinc.3118 Boomer
l busted up everything he did plus both arms, but the femur l traded for two busted ribs. l can tell you he suffered a world of pain and l'll bet he had more that the dozen screws and 2 metal plates l ended up with. Brave man.
@@luliluinc.3118 You clicked, you replied...you care. Whoops!!!
As a young man in the sixties, I saw "The Goldenrod" in a Danish Car Exhibition in Copenhagen! It had just got the Record a short while before, and it was a wide but low, elegant looking car with I think 4 engines?
Great video guys! The more power you have the more things you break. Maybe a billion shaft drive?👍
I just gotta say it, those drivers have a screw loose, hopefully not in the car! I was a USAF Firefighter. Every single fighter pilot was like these guys, cool as a cucumber but nutty as a fruitcake! Much admiration.
Screw Loose ? watch the Isle of Mann. motorcycle T T races , as they travel at over 200mph through small towns and villages on normal roads
@@MrDaiseymay As opposed to driving at twice the speeds???
P.S. "Isle of Mann is nothing but a bunch of snot nosed scooter jockeys...surprised their worthless asses aren't using training wheels!"
See how stupid it sounds to randomly trash one thing to tout another? Grow up, try harder...

I don't understand the title. The landspeed world record broke the 400 mph mark almost half a century ago. John Cobb did it in 1947 hitting 402 mph on a single pass. The first official record though belongs to Donald Campbell in 1964 hitting 403 mph. The current landspeed record belongs to Andy Green driving the ThrustSSC hitting 760 mph in 1997. Mr. Green was the first person to break the sound barrier on land.
the land speed record for wheel-driven cars. ThrustSSC was the most incredible feat imaginable. To anybody that doesn't know the story

This is about the 2 wheel LSR
Motorcycle record. Not jet car.
Doh!
I like the information but..... please see my previous comment!
I had the great opportunity to crew for Terry Nish for two years at Bonneville. Sadly, Terry passed away in 2018 at the age of 80. His life as well as his family was devoted to the Bonneville Salt Flats and going fast.
7:22 Wrong, the lowest gear is first gear. The push start is because the first gear (the bottom gear, the lowest gear) is so high a ratio it can't be used for a standing start.
Regardless of second gear being the lowest, second gear is still second gear, not first. They didnt put first gear in it.
@@leelafarlett3535 If they did not install the normal first gear into the transmission then the lowest gear is by default first gear. It's the first one you use when starting out even if you have to push it up to 40 mph to let the engine pull the gear.
@@chrisbaker2903 Thats true, and also false . If you put a transmission in third to take off, then thats the first gear you use, but its not "first gear". Just try telling the parts man you want first gear for your bike, and see what he lays on the counter. Remember "Who's" on first, and "What" is on 2nd. Third? , you tell me.
@@leelafarlett3535 shhh Your confusing the masses.
Where do they get tires that can hit 400 without falling apart?
I went 200 mph once and what a rush. I couldn't imagine going these speeds.
Watch the many Vids showing the Annual Isle of Mann TT motorcycle ROAD RACE, They travel around the Roads of the island, 237 mph is the current record. A similar number, of riders and public have been killed, since ir all began, 28th May 1907. Unbeleivable Camerawork.
Top fuel is 334 in 1000 ft.. good god!
@@WillChandlerFLD120 I can say i have driven the salt and in a dragster the speed is only for a micro second. On the salt it's entirely different .You have to maintain or increase your fastest speed for five miles .At those speeds you can feel the smallest of faults in the cars design. One thing I found was my helmet filling with compressed air over 120 MPH. from the cars slipstream . Even little things like that make Land speed racing different world to Drag racing.
@@MrDaiseymay Look for guy martins run on a slat course. He found it was damn sight harder than running fast for a few seconds at IOM.
@@Mercmad yeah a whole different animal. Id think a dry lake bed would better a better surface?! But ive never experienced salt or a lake. I know Craig Breedloves nephew he lives in WNC .he said that salt can get slicker than snot. Don't see how they do it even taking off in low gear.
Congratulations to them. Great post.
when you name your son Rocky, you accept that life of worrying about your kid doing dare-devil shit like trying to reach 300+ MPH in a motorcycle..
I had a '58 red/white Sport Fury convertible. Wish I had kept it, but had used it to pull a 19' trailer 22,000 miles around the US & Canada in 1964 and it was worn out.
Bottom line the fastest wheel driven land speed streamliner is the vesco turbinator that ran 493mph at the Bonneville salt flats in 2018 with an exit speed of 503mph. They where not able to make a return run for the record because the event got rained out. So far since 2018 no one has gone faster because the salt is almost gone from the race area where there was the long course of 13 miles is now down to 5 miles for this years speed week. All the rest of the land speed races at Bonneville this year where canceled because of rain.
The video is from 2008. That's why 400 was the fast speed.
Why have rubber tires today? They should be made out of a material that won’t expand at speed.
Any suggestions?
7:26 Wrong, every car is required to have a first gear.
12:25 Wrong, the Ack Attack is powered by 2 Suzuki Hyabusa turbo Engines producing 750HP each.
Speed is close to God. Love you Lunies. Dave
Крутое хобби пропитанное романтикой! Супер!
I can't stand all the ignorant comments by people here that dont understand LSR. YES, THRUST SSC HAS THE OVERALL RECORD @ 763mph! But there are DOZENS of records to be had by cars, trucks, and bikes of many configurations, using many different sized engines, and fuel types. There's even a Land Speed Record for a 50cc two stroke motorcycle.
Rocky did survive, however,he did need an immediate change of underwear
one thing i noticed with most of these machines is that the front the way they are shaped would cause air to lift the front up and loose stability i would think
going back to immediate post WW2 there were more than a few ex military aircraft engineers involved in the land speed racing. One of the first things tried were the shells off aircraft drop tanks to envelope a car to make it faster ,so there was plenty of knowledge then to to determine lift etc > for those who weren't near other racers during the year long buildup time ,the best source of Info was the SCTA monthly papaer which always contained masses of info for builders based on the experiences of others. Those cars in this vid are the results of 70 plus years of land speed racing so lift is always being accounted for.
What about Craig Breedlove in the spirit of America, over 400 mph, in mid 1960s
With a jet engine though. It took decades for the 400MPH record to be broken and going 400 MPH is a wheel driven car is real achievment.
top demais
Humans are fascinating.
So sad you not able to drive on salt flats anymore
And then, to make it official, they have to recalculate it in meters and km/h 🤭🤭🤭🤭
super speeds, super default, great job ...
I've read
If you've got control over that vehicle, then you're not going fast enough!
I think the driver might disagree with you on that! :)
Did you even watch the video? They show you exactly what happens if you lose control at 3-400 miles an hour... They're lucky to survive those wrecks! All it takes is ONE piece of shrapnel at those speeds to impale you and you're done, and depending how you crash the blunt force of a sudden impact alone can easily kill you..
*Leave it to a Duramaxi pad to almost kill another driver.*
Pedal to the metal? Description says , "medal".
I guess if you go the fast in the category you get the medal. I know bad english.
I was at Gerlach Nevada when a car broke the sound barrier for the first time, howver he missed the 1 hour requirement for 2 runs by 12 seconds so it wasn't official--the next day he made the record
Thrust SSC?
@@k-mc94 not sure, i think it was a British chap, Noble maybe?--sorry
@@richierugs6544 The story fits Thrust SSC. It still holds the record to this day

For 2 wheels jet bike hooda the record and no piston could beat it.
49:38 so it there is no association I win I went 500 miles an hour that sounds historically correct😮😢😅😂🎉
if you want a record you better beat 763 MPH!.
There are 2 (actually 3) land speed records: 1 wheel driven (4 wheel, that is) , another 2 wheel (motorcycles) driven, and unlimited, ie., jet powered. These Gentlemen are vying for the 4 wheeled wheel driven LSR. The record of which you speak was set by a jet powered vehicle.
Thrust powered versus wheel driven...big difference...
Would it count as a record of you took an SR 71 and managed to keep it on the ground and exceeded the land speed record.
@ 7:23 = All vehicles have a first gear, if you remove the 1st gear then the second gear becomes the first gear... if you remove the first two then the third gear becomes the first ;p
Not if they left first gear at home. First stayed home second stayed in the bike.
@@leelafarlett3535 As he said, "if you remove 1st gear then the second gear becomes the first gear" So the second gear that stayed in the bike became 1st gear by default.
The first gear you use could also be first gear. How ever you want to look at it. Dont much matter. @@chrisbaker2903
@@chrisbaker2903 What came first; the chicken or the egg?
9:05 I find it hard to believe that tech inspection allowed them to run over 300mph with tires with a max rated speed of only 300mph. Tech inspection needs to get on the ball.

Oh these tiresome background drums. Stupid!
When the Ameicans stopped trying to break the LSR via the international rules , and switched to Jet thrust, instead of traction. Britain joined in and still came out on top. Now the Americans have switched back the the former rules again. Good Luck.
Who has the wheel driven record again? The one you were bragging about in the first half of your complaint?
P.S. Didn't realize this was an international competition? Regardless, you sure seem to be bragging up Britain, like the whole nation was involved in those record setting attempts..
Which part of those cars did you work on again?
the whole return run thing is stupid. a speed record is a speed record. I don't care if you can also take a crap within the hour.

Awww, how cute, these Americans doing 400 mph. Meanwhile, back in 1997, Andy Green & his merry men officially broke the sound barrier - 763 mph...& they're planning to .go faster

2008!? Lame its 2023.
Yes, and it indicates that there were at least 2022 years, before 2023, to choose from...including 2008.
That's about as logical as a screen door on a submarine.
