As a pilot, we do and watch crash analysis to learn as much as we can. Perhaps we don’t make the same mistakes. Woody’s humiliation is obvious. He teared up. Yet he understood by going through it he was teaching us something. And that is more important than his ego. You guys are tops in my book. BTW Woody also teared up talking about the honor of Gus choosing him to mentor him through instructor. How can one not love you guys.

As a brand new Adventure diver with only 79 total dives under my belt, I have met a large variety of Dive Masters.
The one that sticks out the most was, of course, a completely ego driven nasty one that I only wish he could
let go of the chip on his shoulder long enough to watch and learn from Master Class divers like Woody!
At dive number 51 he was sooo nasty to me that I thought I may have given up on this sport completely.
Luckily I had the opportunity to dive the very next day with a Master Class Diver! Someone who is humble,
honest and can learn from their mistakes.. Those are very admirable traits in not only a dive master, but in a human being!! RESPECT!!!

This video flys in the face of a previous comment when I thought you were too mean verbally responding to an instructor doing (CF1?) and not the ambassador that brings positive awareness to the sport while constantly impressing upon the audience how important safety is combined with a constant level of humility and respect for one’s own limitations and diving in and of itself. Thanks and regardless of this video and admission; which should only further demonstrate the fantastic ambassador and teacher you and Gus are, I think you and Gus represent the best of the dive community that participates on UA-cam and UA-camr’s of all types no matter the sport or lessons or messages they promote.

I just restarted diving after 18 years as my children are now old enough for the OWD. Because my theory lessons were 27 years ago I decided to join the lessons with them - just for a repetition.
Right after the diving holiday I found this YT channel and I love it because I don't need to do any mistake by myself when I can learn from others.
What irritated me in this clip was, that I learned 27 years ago at my SSI OWD lessons, when a diver is missing, search for 30 seconds then go up to the surface. At the PADI OWD lessons of my sons they learned search for 1 minute and then go up.
And now I want to know, are there exeptions from this rule, because it wasn't mentioned in the clip and I haven't found anyone commenting?
I'm wondering what had happened, when the group surfaced and the woman wasn't on the boat. Worthful time had past ...
Thank Goodness that everyone kept fine.
Disclaimer: Englisch is not my mother tongue, so maybe I understood that wrong, that they first dove to the boat and surfaced there.
In addition: feel free to correct my English where there are better expressions.
    Gus, Woody keep going!

Mistakes happen and thankfully everything ended good. You learned from it and checked yourself and now you inform others to . No need to be embarrassed or anything. Think of all the people you have aided and potentially saved now that you learned from that mistake. Keep it up you two stay safe and good luck.

I've been looking forward to this one since you guys started teasing it! :) And I'm not a diver/never will be, like many of your viewers. I come because I respect your expertise, and I admire your exceptional story story-weaving/retelling abilities. So happy to have found your channel, gentlemen!

I also remember my mistakes and carry them with me throughout my life. It can be hard and embarrassing even a decade after but, I think if you act with your mistakes in mind you'll be better for it and have a much more enriching life. Thanks for sharing(although I'm 3 years late)

I think it's great that you learned from your mistake and became a better instructor instead of doubling down. There's a local instructor in my city who is the complete opposite. He often took students, even OW level students, to depths of over 180 ft on a single tank of air. Even after multiple students getting bent and him being expelled by Padi, he still does it and brags about it on social media.

That's a good thing for Eddie as an instructor. I was in kinda similar situation once and our lack of experience, not as an operator but as an instructor, can get our charge killed. This kind of realization must be drilled into us before we l take on the role. It's also good as a boss to prepare for such situation. I'm glad everyone is alright. Super glad the lesson was learned without loses. This VDO and tale should be shown as educational material, maybe with black bar on Eddie's eyes, to aspiring instructor. Thank you for sharing such valuable experience, so others may avoid it.

I love the honesty. Everyone makes mistakes! Admitting mistakes just adds to y’all’s competency. And we all let our egos get to us from time to time!
Also, I love these stories. Honestly I just enjoy hearing y’all talk. Keep up the great work!

So, I ordered some snorkeling gear and tried it out in the river today. It felt really unnatural at first, but we had a blast. You guys have absolutely, 100% inspired me (and my wife, by default) to start gearing towards diving. Snorkeling in the Cheat River is a small step compared to what you guys do, but it’s something, and I’m one to commit. I just want to do it safely and correctly. West Virginia isn’t exactly Mecca for underwater activity, but we’ve been meaning to use our passports a bit more. We each run separate businesses, and are hellbent on finding ways to stay sane. I may never go into a cave, but I certainly want some of the enthusiasm you fellas display on here. Thank you for putting your heart into what you do, and for being honest and sincere about what diving is. I’m completely sold.

The bit where you said "time to talk about it" was interesting. When I first started scubaing (in the Red Sea) I had a pretty bad experience with a substitute instructor (I was already open-water certified by this dive, but he was leading the dive and there were various newbies on it).
So the usual instructor had a (rare) unplanned day off, and this other guy led the dive. He brought his girlfriend (also an experienced diver) along with him, as well as a GoPro. At first I thought that could be cool, maybe he'd even snap some pictures of us!
The dive site was an average Red Sea site, random reef with some interesting formations, around ~12-16m depth. As soon as we got down there, our guide started taking selfies on the reef wall. Selfies with fishes. Selfies of him being upside down, or whatever, just all kinds of posing. He was mostly occupied with taking selfies for the entirety of the trip, and occasionally he looked back at the rest of the group and just kinda acknowledged our existence. I don't remember him asking for air levels once.
My buddy was his girlfriend. As the dive went on, I signaled my air levels to her several times, especially when I fell below the agreed upon return pressure. She tried to get the guide's attention but at this point he was a good 10+ metres ahead of us, taking selfies. Note that with the visibility we had (not as good as usual in the Red Sea), he was already kind of at the edge of where we could still see him, and there was no way he could still see the whole group. It did seem like he had turned the dive at this point, and was slowly heading back towards the boat.
I kept signaling to my buddy as my air levels were getting lower and lower, until eventually I ran out and requested her alternate (which I got without problems). Nobody in our group could see the guide anymore, so she kind of took over the dive as the only experienced diver and guided us to surface right there so we could orient ourselves. Fortunately the boat was in sight and not far away, so we swam to it at the surface. At the boat we met our dive guide again, who did not at all acknowledge what just happened (hence why this video reminded me of it - there was *no* "time to talk about it"!). She however was ready to talk about it and gave him a piece of her mind (to him insisting everything was fine!) as soon as we got out of gear ... I don't think they're a couple anymore. I also told the other instructor about the incident and safe to say that company won't get this guy as the substitute instructor again.
From the perspective of a newbie at the time, it was great that I was buddied with an experienced and *calm* diver when this happened. When I realised that I was going to run out of air, I didn't have to be worried about my buddy not knowing what to do or misinterpreting signals. That definitely helped with me also remaining calm throughout the incident ...

When I was taught back in the day with NASDS, the bottom line is that ANYONE can cancel any dive, anytime...if they aren't up for a dive or part of a dive, that should be respected. Not everyone is a superman type diver like yourself Woody and obviously you learned your lesson. Great video guys.

Thank you for sharing I am a dive master and I am guiding others divers right now, it’s totally true what your saying, when guiding other diver the dive is Not for the guide is for the other divers on the trip , it requires also a lot of patience and understanding that the other divers are not at the same level that the guide .

I was on a cruise excursion, snorkeling around a small shipwreck, and pointed out to my [then] husband that we were getting too far from the boat. He looked - and hollered at our tour guide "Hey! The boat is drifting away!" Our tour guide had his "Oh sh!t" moment when he realized the anchor hadn't been set.
Turns out our tour guide could swim really fast!

Woody: "I still feel humbled admitting this to our 25K subscribers..."
Well, 88K views and 289K subscribers later 😂 Time flies! It's ok Woody. Life is a journey of discovery that we learn from and better ourselves. The lessons learned early on helped you become a better diving instructor. Sometimes we are blinded by our passions. I'm glad no one got hurt and you came away with more insight on how to dive safely with students.

Hey Gus and Woody!!! I am a new subscriber and so glad that I found your channel. I have never dived ....I've never even been inside a cave, underwater or dry. That's OK though because I LOVE your channel and I am fascinated by cave diving. I wish I could get certified but I cannot because I am disabled. I was born with spina bifida. I am not physically able to go to all the beautiful underwater cave diving places but watching your wonderful videos is the next best thing! I have learned so much and I'm beginning to feel as if I know you both personally. The best part about subscribing to your channel is knowing there are so many videos for me to watch and also knowing there will be so many videos in the future that I can watch. Peace.
