Chief Seattle Letter to President Franklin Pierce

This letter was sent in 1855 by Native American Chief Seattle of the Duwamish Tribe to Franklin Pierce, President of the United States in response to an offer to purchase the Dwamish lands in the North East of the US, currently Washington State. The Native Americans were powerfully bound to the earth; the idea of property was foreign to them, and they actually considered the earth to own humankind. This was the Chief’s moving, lucid letter:

I live in Latin America in Chile, and like the majority of the inhabitants of Latin America I also have Indigenous blood running in my veins, I wish with all my Heart that our Beloved Indigenous Brothers of the north and all those who have that blood within them, be treated with LOVE and Respect always, and that with LOVE you also remember that Beautiful feeling in the depths of your Hearts called LOVE (GOD) that makes us be the so Respectful and Spiritual People that we are in the depth of our SOUL.
