If you think it's a bit of a bargain at £27k then what is it at the actual price of £21,500 for the Exclusive or £19850 for the Excite? The MG5 is a game changer. You don't get all the bells and whistles, but there's nothing even remotely comparable out there. The aesthetics are debatable, but the drive is really good. The steering and responsiveness in 'sport' mode are better than 'adequate' and the suspension gives a great balance between forgiving the imperfections of the road and feeling true in the corners.
I must admit I quite like it, and at the price you can really buy them for they are the EV bargain of the year. At the end of the day, a car is transport, and practicality matters. If I want excitement, I take my motorbike out😁
Had mine delivered in January the numberplate is fine now. All sorted so nothing to mention. Mine is doing 1000 miles a week and eating the milage with no issues so far at all. 9200 miles so far.

People nowadays are expecting too many extras. I come from a generation where your car had a cassette deck and 4 forward gears if you were lucky. Now people expect satnav, dab, cruise control and as many driver aids you can think of.
When he mentioned it didn't come with all the driver aids I actually saw that as a positive. Saying that sat nav, air con and Bluetooth have won me over massively guess I'm getting soft.
Agreeing with you, Martin. I wish that more EV manufacturers would sell a no frills car with decent battery size for longer range. If the low spec version of this one has the same battery, I'd jump at the chance of owning one, especially seeing that there is decent wriggle room, down to £21k or so, on the price.
Thanks for another informative review Bryan. Yes it looks a bit dull but hey it's an estate car, though I do agree with your comment re the MG badge. Those of us who remember what MG used to stand for will understand. I don't get why any car designer bothers to have folding rear seats without allowing them to fold flat, let alone in an estate body where carrying larger loads is exactly why you want/need one. I had flat floored, no lip access on a Saab 9-3 Sportwagon which was great until several full wine bottles rolled out when I got home from a shopping trip - lipped access has its benefits. Keep up the good work.
1. most SUVs have a similar footprint to Hatch (ZS EV is both narrower and shorter than the 5). 2. Most SUVs have a bigger boot. 3. most SUVs have a waist height boot (perfect for loading) rather than stooping for a hatch. However I think there is a definite market for an Estate EV, well done MG for releasing this. Shame the boot is 6ltrs smaller than the ZS EV. I think if you need range the 5 is hard to beat, for everything else you want the ZS EV if your on a budget (you'll only miss the bigger dash screen and auto AC).
I recently drove a Kia with lane keep assist and it felt like the steering UJ had come loose ie the system was involving itself in the steering all the time and was very disconcerting. I managed to turn it iff and kept it off for the rest of the trip. So the MG not having this is a plus in my eyes
I'm not a lover of lane keep assist and tend to turn it off on most cars. It certainly isn't much fun when you are seeking out the apex on a decent corner on a great road, so its a "NO!" from me too! Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
I have LCAS on my IONIQ EV and it only really works on Motorway Driving where keeping in the centre lane isnt difficult. Where it is really annoying is on country roads where you have to drive almost in the middle of the road and can be quite dangerous, so id agreee not having it isnt really an issue.
on a good point rear seat base lifts so you can lay boot area flat seat base rear is just clipped in like most older cars pull up from front but means its lose thing once removed
An excellent video of the MG5 (new one coming 2nd/3rd qtr this year btw) and I particularly liked the use of humour "we will come round yer hoose and clean it for 6 months - we probably won't be doing that" !!! - loved that.
Love watching your reviews from across the pond in the States. Although I had to look up what an "estate car" was. It's what we call a "station wagon", as it was named after the old wagons that would take your luggage from the train station to the hotel or your home.
Good review couple of comments though the car in that spec is widely available for about £22k now making it even better value and for someone who until last year spent 2 hours commuting going over the infotainment setup with speakers etc would be worth a nice 30 second mention.
Thanks Bryan. I can see this one being used as a taxi. Over in China, that's exactly what they do with the same vehicle, but wearing a different badge.
I thoroughly enjoyed this video review of the MG5. Your presentational style made me want to listen to what you were saying. I also appreciated the overall format of the video with the review, the resumé, and then the summary. Very well done. Liked and subscribed.

I would agree with you . I just got one 3 weeks ago, having ordered an Exclusive model for the cash price of £22795 3 months ago! After and driving 80 miles on the motorway, I was regretting not buying a car with adaptive cruise control. The normal cruise control is really a waste of time unless your on a empty road, having to constantly change the speed when following vehicles ahead vary the speed is a pain. I wanted the extra range otherwise I would have gone for the ZS with all the toys. However its a nice car to drive and I wanted the extra length of an estate make it easer carry to long RC model glider wings. Although it would of been better if the rear seats went flat. Looks don’t bother me ,its functionality , keyless entry , rear parking camera , range, load capacity, performance and price and the 7 year warranty was the main selling point over all other EV’s at the time. However if I was to order a EV now I may have considered the VW ID 3 - prices have dropped to £28k . They have adaptive cruise , remote smartphone support etc, probably about 40 mile extra range. ( I’m getting 180 miles on the MG with a outside temp 3 deg C - so that’s pretty good and thats with the heating on 3.2 miles /kw ) No rear camera or keyless entry for that price of course. Although its £5k more and has a miserable 3 year warranty I bet the lower depreciation would compensate, I wish I waited another year to be be honest, if I known we would be another lock down I would not of ordered it so apart from 105 mile delivery mileage its hardly been used. In another year there are a fair number of new EV’s coming out and that will hopefully mean lower prices.
I would prefer it to have MG Pilot (which I think is of German origin?) and this would enable it to gain 5 stars with EuroNcap, if the structure is safe enough. It doesn't look as though the facelift version will reach the UK before next summer and that's a long time away! I can't see MG submitting this version for test without MG Pilot, as 3 stars wouldn't be a good look. But, not knowing for sure that its structure is strong is a worry for me. Looks solid, sounds solid (almost a Golf 'thunk' from the doors)........ but is it?
My dad just bought the mg5 long range over 250 miles to a charge has mg pilot aswell it’s a great car and he got the exclusive for 24550 brand new bargain
Hi Julia. Thanks for taking the time to watch the video, and for your comment. It's not that its a boring car per se, its just that there is nothing there for the enthusiast, which is fine, as not every car needs to be. And it is well equipped, practical and will suit a lot of people's needs. Its just that for me, with an MG badge on it, I'd just like to have seen something a little bit more "MG-ish". They have shown a new electric sports car concept, so maybe that's something for me to look forward to! Anyway, glad to have you on board and thanks again! Bryan.
@@AutoEV There's an updated version of the MG 5 EV on the horizon for later in 2021 and this car will finally come to Austria. I'm an estate girl and that's why I'm so interested in the MG 5 EV. Currently I have an old Jaguar X-Type Estate Diesel at hand and this car also fulfils everything boring about a car, but it's practicality is just great. When I say a car could bore one to death that's a great compliment. :)
There is talk of a refresh coming that will include but it will effect the price, I got my MG5 Exclusive for under £23k and its a solid car that I really like.
Interesting that most motor journalists likes to hate on VWs infotainment system for being laggy, when everyone knows it has got OTA updates and most probably will become better as time goes by. At the same time they just mention the laggy system of the MG as a minor hiccup. I know, I know, there is a big price difference between the two and that you have to take that into consideration. Still, from what I see on reviews of the MG infotainment system I think it's not acceptable at any price point. I think looks like (given I haven't tested it myself) that infotainment system could be a potential traffic issue.
I test drove one yesterday and it's fine. It takes about 10 seconds for the day nav to first load up, but once that's done it's absolutely fine. You can flick between sat nav, radio and other functions and it works pretty well. It is perhaps a little old fashioned but it's not as big a deal as some reviewers make out. The new ZS has an updated system which look a lot slicker, and I guess if the new MG5 comes here that will get the same system. Overall I liked the car a lot. I'd have one tomorrow but am going to try the new ZS and wait a few months to see if the new MG5 comes to the UK too.
Best review I've seen on this car, seriously considering it. What I need to know now is how do I get the right adapters for my Thule roof bars which are currently on the Leaf ?
Thank you for watching, and taking the time to leave us a positive comment. You might need to talk to some one about this. There was a lot of chatter about the roof rails not being able to carry loads. I'd suggest contacting MG Cars or your local dealer at the very least before buying anything. Bryan @ AutoEV.
Absolutely, and for those that need just that, it is hard to fault. Great to have you here watching, and thank you for taking the time to comment. Bryan @ AutoEV
it baffles me why they would not just upgrade the screen CPU for a few hundred pounds, how many buyers will they lose with that ridiculously laggy screen?
I agree with you, far too much is made of it. We have two cars one with so called softer plastic and one with hard plastic and whichever car we are driving the touch of the plastic is no issue at all.
Exactly. I never even notice what kind of plastic it is. Not like you ever sit fondling the dash. And hard plastic is much more hard-wearing and easier to clean for a family car...
I really don’t want plastic seats for £27k. Is there a leather option or quality cloth alternative on the model you drove. I saw a 2 year old ZS today and the plastic seats did not look good. I thought plastic seats had gone with the 1970’s
No leather option available, but the lead-in 'Excite' has cloth seats, and I suspect, that is probably where this car makes most sense. Cheap as possible. It still has good equipment levels on that model.
@Wooly Chewbakker - You speak for yourself- remember everyone does not agree with you. Anyway the point I was making rather badly was the plastic seats in cars of the 1960’s and 1970’s were unpleasant to sit on in hot weather because they did not breathe (unlike Leather and Cloth) and left you with a sweaty derrière . Are these fake leather seats in the new MG any better?
I’ve had leather seated Mercs for ten years, moved to EV in December with a MG5 and the seats are fine. All the luxuries my last Merc had I don’t miss at all. Also the Apple Car Play for me is the clincher. The car is a bit quirky but after over 3000 miles I still enjoy driving it.
I have an exclusive and it doesn't feel like plastic. It's soft, comfortable and warm. Better than leather and doesn't kill animals, can't see the downside.
The concept is bang on for now, but personally I can't get past that 60's Vauxhall Viva styling crease all the way down the side.... The Chinese just don't seem to "get" what makes successful styling....... It isn't enough just to copy. You have to be able to innovate, and that's where the Chinese lose points.... But that said, it will sell because of it's competitive pricing, and the current buzz around EV's..
Hi I'm Chinese and the mg factory is just 2 miles down the road from mine. My guess is the styling choice is deliberate. Many people in China , myself included, want their car (especially if it happens to be a cheap one), to be as inconspicuous as possible.
A really good review, however I do 20K miles a year and drive every day on the M25... with all those mad drivers, so the ‘bells and whistles’ that are actually ‘safety features’, that I have on my old Ford Focus, are very important when driving in fast moving traffic, I am usually the slowest car at 70 mph! I also have an MGB, so would have no problem with the badge. If this car had the bells and whistles I would order one tomorrow.... just going to have to wait until MG offer a few optional extras to accommodate all road and driving conditions...
You make a very good point Andrew, and as much as I myself don't use those features, plenty of people do, especially in those situations you describe. We are believe that there will be a revised MG 5 along sometime that should "hopefully" be equipped with MG Pilot. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. Bryan @ AutoEV.
@@AutoEV hi, thanks, I will certainly look out for a upgraded MG5 with a view to ordering one... let’s hope they do it soon, I think they have missed a trick by not at least offering optional upgrades like their competitors do. The MG is the nicest and best priced EV at the moment.
I have the Bells and whistles on my Ioniq ev but i find them quite dangerous as they allow you relax too much, when I should be fully concentrated on my driving. Emergency braking is probably the only one ive found useful. Would be interested to hear why you feel they really help you on the M25 . The irony i find is that so many people with all these safety features have no issues using their Mobile phone whil still driving , despite BlueTooth being available for hand free calling. Seen people on Motorway with their IPAD on the Steering wheel as they allow Cruise Control to drive the can and keep them in the centre of the lane. They think they have Level5 Auto Pilot
Those safety features are massive dangerous features and almost caused a lot of accidents! M25 is safest motorway, it's just a traffic jam and no one speeds on it! I see people with feet on dashboard reading book in middle lane due to lane guidance!!
@@itsfahys Hi Stephen, apologies for the delay in responding. I can only say that I am on the M25 every day and drive to building sites very often too. My current Ford 2015 Ford Focus already has all of the systems on the MG5 and more, I use adaptive cruise control a lot, the EBA has saved me a few times, not out of a lack of concentration but because mad drivers dive across you to take a junction they have missed, even running across the chevrons in front of me on several occasions. It has been suggested that these features dull your awareness or even encourage use of mobiles / iPads.... I really don’t agree with that, I see drivers using phones in all types of vehicles, when driving any car you should keep your hands on the wheel and concentrate at all times, I know I do!, a pity so many don’t. From my experience most accidents are caused when drivers are not concentrating and many such crashes may have been averted if more vehicles have better warning systems. I don’t find the safety features an obstruction and will be looking for them on my EV. The MG5 does look very good, especially the long range version. Ow out, so I am seriously considering changing my car while it still has some residual value. Good luck with your choice. all the best, Andrew
No - for the size, it is not "quite a practical car" - 464 litres of boot space for an estate of this size is poor. Your "tiny little bit of drop" into the boot floor appears to be around 5-6 inches which, for an estate car, is unacceptable. You were right, though, to highlight the non-flat folding rear seats. All told, it is hopelessly impractical as an estate car - it has to have a flat load entry which remains flat all the way to the front seats.
Given that SAIC used to build the Passat in China under license I think that there's a reason for that :) And yes, you're not wrong - I tried to open someone's Passat in Tesco's car park the first week that I had it, but in my defence it was very dark.
The HK "No 8" number plate (reg) is legally registered to me and it is own on my name. Hopefully it can be picked by MG and use it to help the advertising for MG at HK one day...!!! 👍 All the best of luck...!!! 👍 Wai Kuen WONG /TC 126265
do not like the wheels as makes it look like a vw passat estate with those cheap nasty wheels worth around 6k not the 32k this will cost if you cant say no to 5k of extras from sales reps

Absolutely, and for those that need just that, it is hard to fault. Great to have you here watching, and thank you for taking the time to comment. Bryan @ AutoEV
All other estate cats I've had do not have a rear "load lip'
Some do, but it's better if they don't. Makes life a bit easier! Thanks for watching and commenting.
I'm getting Dominic Diamond vibes...
Why the flagnog it would have a fake exhaust pipe 🙄
it baffles me why they would not just upgrade the screen CPU for a few hundred pounds, how many buyers will they lose with that ridiculously laggy screen?
I need my house cleaned 😩
I reckon this car will be popular with taxi drivers like the Dacia Logan has but is no longer on sale in UK!
All cars have hard plastic!!! Why do reviewers mention it. Its easy clean anyway and you dont normally touch those parts!?!?!?!?!
Because the softer-touch ones are much more pleasing.
@@AutoEV - Thanks for the quick reply. Shame cloth interior is not also available on top of the range.
Check out the BYD Han, if only that was available in the UK, because style wise its the best looking EV out there.
The irony i find is that so many people with all these
safety features have no issues using their Mobile phone whil still driving , despite BlueTooth being available for hand free calling.
Also, the roof bars were mentioned but dd not say that they only for styling, they have no load-carrying capacity.
Unacceptable is a bit extreme haha. New one you can raise boot floor so it is level.
So.... it’s... okay.
Yup, its fine.......
Looks a bit like a Passat
Given that SAIC used to build the Passat in China under license I think that there's a reason for that :)
And yes, you're not wrong - I tried to open someone's Passat in Tesco's car park the first week that I had it, but in my defence it was very dark.
The HK "No 8" number plate (reg) is legally registered to me and it is own on my name. Hopefully it can be picked by MG and use it to help the advertising for MG at HK one day...!!! 👍 All the best of luck...!!! 👍

I will not buy a Chinese car.
Nice car, good for company car drivers on tax. But it’s bloody ugly on the outside
do not like the wheels as makes it look like a vw passat estate with those cheap nasty wheels
worth around 6k not the 32k this will cost if you cant say no to 5k of extras from sales reps
There are no options to make it more expensive.
