  • More than half of the world's oil paintings come from Da Fen in southern China. Located in China's manufacturing hub, Shenzhen, Da Fen thrives on the mass production of art. It exports millions of replicas of Van Goghs, Monets, and Picassos to the world, generating billions in revenue for painters who were once farmers or migrant workers. The founder of Da Fen, the 69-year-old artist Huang Jiang, spoke to BBC News about his miracle business model and the challenges his team faces now. Video journalist: Xinyan Yu

These paintings are never meant to be art. They are meant to be *decorations* for walls and rooms etc. There is demand, and then there is market. I dont know why people have to compare these paint-workers with artists and condemn them for not being original. Dont tell me you think the painting in your living room is supposed to be a "piece of ART". Why isn't it in the gallery then???

Yes the paintings on my wall are Art and are in galleries 😉. Yes there are many talented artist in China that should be on their own showing their work but because of crazy over population it’s hard to be on top when everyone in your area is doing the exact thing. They need to make their own style and look for other means outside of their country but that’s hard when your country controls most of what you do.

These people are talented and most likely want to create their own arts but the big environment means they can’t survive unless they use their talent for this kind of work. There’s a documentary about the people behind the paintings: ua-cam.com/video/VENXneCDR7Q/v-deo.html

I made a Series of art works regarding the situation of those art copyists living in Xiamen back in 2006. Now I revisited the place . They are gone mostly.

Living in Beijing we are just two German artist left who work since long in the capital. The art world is disappearing here as well . Still we are standing but it gets difficult. Let’s see what the year of the Rabbit has in mind with us.

Van gogh lived under 30 years with his parents, never got a girlfriend even cutting an ear off to show sacrifice which he failed and was a japonist who hanged Japanese wood art on his room to satisfy his art.
The Chinese will probably stop copying his art if they knew this.

But you don't know that Japanese paintings are influenced by Chinese paintings. In contrast, ancient Japanese paintings of the same period may not be half as valuable as Chinese paintings. Also please stop your stupid statement, does that mean that all the piano pieces played by pianists in the past are plagiarized? Art is precious because of his influence, like the Mona Lisa being painted all over the world. Isn't copying a cult? The Orchid Pavilion prefaces the greatest Chinese calligraphy works, and all that can be found today are imitations of more than a thousand years ago. But he is still so precious. It's the most shameful thing you can imagine all the great works of art of the past being forgotten. Communication art is true love of art.

Not everything needs to be massed produced. They ruin everything and now Art. Nothing is sacred. As an Artist I have no problem with them making art and selling it but part of a company just to dilute the market. Might as well just by a Computer printed copy.

If people want to buy the printed one, buy it, if they want to buy paint one, buy it, it's their choice and freedom, but to me, you sounds jealous and you are probably the so called 'artist' who can't even sell

"Identical to the original"... Uh, no. To an untrained eye it's probably very close, but you just can't speed up the process like that and not lose something. Oil painting masters used glazing techniques for skin tones, this requires the addition of several layers of semi translucent oil paint. Because of that, a simple portrait would take 20 to 60 hours.
And then there's still the fact, that you can't copy an artwork without changing the essence of the painting, the feeling it creates in the viewer, the subtleties. If you can, then you're a really, really skilled forger and definitely take the same, if not more time than the original artist.

Thank you but what is produced there is not ART. It is a silver plated garbage like khalil gibrain said. Those "painters" (the producers of the paintings and NOT a racial splur) are not artist. Art is a problem solving mechanism of interpretation of the world both external and internal. These "painters" are not doing that at all. They may be talented at painting and have to put bread on the table but they are only painting one painting in their entire lifetimes. Where are they working through the process. Essentially they are defeating the purpose of art which is intended to express the human condition(be it directly or indirectly) and doing the complete opposite and making themselves into machines. I am not saying not to copy but copy as a means of putting yourself in the same though process. Copy as a means to gain understanding so that you can express your own ideas. I copy and even sell my copies but I copy as a means of understanding the artist and by extension with their humanity. My copies are not stenciled in, nor do I do 1 gazillion copies of the same thing. They have mistakes, reinterpretations, changes, differences in the conscious decision making process. I do copies as a means of understanding for my increase in the fundamentals of art and to express my ideas better. For example Van Gogh's painting at one stage was his INTERPRETATION of Japanese techniques after he mastered it. To be honest even a child's stick figure has more soul than those paintings which to me are dead paint on a canvas. Will never buy from there it not art. Its a print shop

you r funny. Everyone knows it's a painting shop. The painters are not trying to make art. they are not pretending to make art. They dont claim their works as art. They just want to make money from replicas and to allow people who want a painting in their room to be able to affort it, unlike the "real art" which costs millions. And why are u here judging them for what they never claim to be?

Lucky you have the luxury to paint in the way you please. These artists do it to put food on the table like you said. They must have learnt the techniques whether self taught or with help and even after having obtained art degrees because they don't just magically know how to paint so in other words they put in the effort to learn the skills then you happen along and debase them. Print shop you call it. Please ask your next door neighbour who hasn't obtained the skills to do what they do.. overnight.. go on. Your opinion is pretty lousy. Who are you to say they don't have an appreciation for art or presume to know what runs through their minds as I'm sure there would be those who enjoy it and no, not because they get paid for it. I wonder if your very judgemental view is prejudice against the ubiquitous "Made in China" mass production line of goods in general and that if you can't find fault in the quality of the paintings before your eyes then you have to blame the painters because surely something must be wrong with them.
