Damn, I don't share any of the same criticisms. I seem to have approached the game a lot differently. I was happy and eager to explore the map, so I got obtained most of the collectables and other tracked things naturally. It didn't feel forced and I didn't get tired of it. I think powering through the story and leaving the bulk of the map clearing for post-game was detrimental. I don't enjoy playing any game like that. I can't help but wonder if you were in a bit of a mood when starting the game because you didn't seem to enjoy it from the beginning.
I'm sorry that you were glitched out of the platinum. I wouldn't say that this is one of the best games I've ever played, but it is one of the best experiences I've had playing a video game. I hope that you return to it one day and have a much more pleasant time. Thank you for another Platinum Journey!

I explored a good chunk of each map as I went and did just about any side quest that popped up. Those were grand, good at times. Certainly didn't power through the story, although I understand it might have come off that way in the video.
I did consider covering side quests but they isn't all that much to talk about.
Unfortunately, I could tell something was off within the first 30 minutes. It felt so slow. The game capture was recording and I clocked a cutscene at 7 minutes. Don't remember anything in 2018 being that long.
Myself and Ragnarok didn't click I'm afraid, but I'm glad you enjoyed it so much.

Wow, I actually never thought I would see the day! I Platinum Journey with no Platinum?! This glitch sucks man, I hate being bugged out of Platinums....Maybe in 12 months you'll fancy a revisit as a bonus clean up episode. Great video as always, keep up the amazing work!

I given up with trophies now :( Too much work, plus stressful at times with all the collectables u must find.
I jsut wanna enjoy the game now without having to take twice amount of time to finsih the stroy just to find collectables and the remaining trophies to do. I spend weeks to platinum a game. My list of games to play is long enough. I would rather when I'm done start a new game or go on call of duty online. But good luck Adam :) Hope u reach 100 plats

To be fair God of War 2018 was about Kratos AND Atreus so playing and exploring his Feelings and motivations was interesting. Nonetheless the first games story was better.

Everything you said there about not caring about any stories except Kratos' is exactly how I felt. I have beaten the story but have been putting off the collectible run for over a year now. It's so unnecessary. Hopefully I don't encounter the same bug as you it's unbelievably infuriating.
Great work on the video regardless Adam as always, the music and world building was perfect.

Yeah I had the same feeling when playing the game. The point of the no cut camera is that you can follow one character uninterrupted through the whole game, which is really immersive. But if you start playing as other characters then the no cut camera sort of losses the point.
And as you say, Kratos is the one interesting character. Everyone else are just interesting when interacting with Kratos and when not interacting with him, not so much.
I know that the original plan was to make 3 games but due to the development time of the games they only opted to make 2 and you feel it. It felt to me like they crammed in story for worth for 2 games into this one and it just became to much. The game felt bloated.
When I played God of War 2018 it took me about 40 hours to do almost everything in the game and it was fun. Ragnarök took 50 hours but it felt sooo muuuuch loooonger.
God of War 2018 was a simple, but very effective story. I found Ragnarok overbearing and to be honest, quite boring. The gameplay as well began to annoy me, as the length of the game made the gameplay limitations very obvious. I just ended up putting it on the easiest difficulty 🤷. Not to help either, the stupid damn collectibles. If I got the glitch you had, I would’ve gone mad, sorry that happened. However, as always, a great video Adam!
Yeah, I way preferred 2018's story.

Have my sympathy on this one, Adam. I always wondered if we'd ever get a plat journey without the plat, just a shame it was the game cheating you over rather than it beating you!
Yeah, I figured it would be some crazy boss I can't beat or an impossible multiplayer grind, not a bug.
I always wondered what would happen if you were unable to obtain the platinum, always figured it would be a multilayer trophy or something that's just a crazy grind. Didn't expect to see it happen this way. Still a great episode though.

Bummer, this is the first time I’ve been disappointed with a Platinum Journey episode. This episode felt rushed, and uninspired which isn’t like you, Adam. I feel like you didn’t really give Ragnarok a chance, and you seem to come out the gate already disinterested, and wanting to rush through it to get it out of the way. I say this because you’ve dealt with far worse, more tedious Platinums (like MGS2, and Vice City with the Cannoli Trophy) and manage to persevere, but this one seem to lack any passion. Like you were just going through the motions, and was just eager to get it over with.
I am sorry for the disheartening glitch that really ruined the Plat for you, and of course I mean no disrespect and don’t blame you for your personal criticism against it, cause I agree with most of the criticism. Especially the Atreus part.

I tried to give it a chance but the pacing for me was so slow and uninteresting. Felt like I was watching and not playing. Seemed a bit aimless whereas 2018 had a directness.
The difference between Ragnarok and MGS2 or Vice City is that I really like both of those two games. So the tedious stuff at the end I wanted to persevere.
Unfortunately, Ragnarok bored me. I knew the collectibles would be annoying but also not being into the story was a blow. I was indeed eager to get it over with after a while and move on.

This game was boring, the worst entry in the entire series. I hated getting the plat and this one made me reconsider trophy hunting as a whole. I ONLY go for the plat in games I find very interesting and engaging now. Good video Adam, as usual.

I also didn’t love this game. I found the collectible stuff just awful and the story never fully gripped me . Sorry about the game cheating you out of a trophy I know the feeling with Doom 2016 all the collectibles and challenges and upgrades glitched out on me and had to keep restarting and it didn’t work 3 plus times of doing it all again and finally got it to work by completely wiping my game save and it was just truly awful but at least doom is really good time to play.

Honestly both 2018 and Ragnarok was a really tedious and boring.
If story and dialogues didn't exist in game i'd probably refund it.
They're really interesting than collectibles.
With collectibles either need to have to show them all on map after completing the game and teleporting really nearby instead of dragging all over from one part to the end or make them far less in the game.
Capcom did it with Resident Evil 4 as small cost of DLC.
I still didn't platinum both yet i'm still at that Berserker king.
I did defeat Valkyrie queen in 2018 and have ptsd out of it but i don't get how both games have more percent than GTA 5 Platinum.
That game is much easier to platinum than 2018 and Ragnarok.
Despite being boring with collectibles, at least you can find them and skip to destinations with taxi or heli unlike in GOW.
Man 2018 version was so much better.

Sucks you didn't enjoy this one Adam, and on top of that you encountered a glitch preventing you from the plat. I personally loved it, but even I didn't go back for ng+ because of it's pacing, so I get it.

EVERYTHING should be marked after the main story, or after a side mission as a reward. Relying on guides is just poor UX.

So thankful I never enountered this bug during my Playthrough. Took me over 140 something episodes to complete not to mention failed takes. Would have been pissed! Lol
Damn man that is hell there. It took me about 10 ish stream episodes of spider man 2 last week while visiting family in Utah. I couldn’t imagine doing 140 episodes.

It happens Adam, unfortunately for game developers trophies are an afterthought so if a collectible or miscellaneous trophy doesn't pop, they usually just recommend starting a new game or if there is enough of an uproar, patch it later on. Hopefully you get your platinum at some point.

@@AdamMcDermott Don't give up, I understand there are certain games which can make you feel defeated but take it one step at a time. Dead Space 2 took me three months mainly because of Hardcore difficulty but seeing you persevere gave me the inspiration to see it through. You don't have to do it now, just maybe play one story mission a day or go back to it at a later date. Keep up the great work.

Trophy glitches are cruel, but even crueler when they happen in a game like ragnarok, which is crafted to be played only once with it's long scripted story segments. You earned this platinum anyway, you just got cheated out of the moment

Thats why i dont play sony 1st party games anymore , mideorcore tv show wanna bes at best , funny how im currently 100%ing GTA 4 on PC and that game came out in 2008 and has better quality of life for achievement hunters then this game in 2022 ... sony first party games were cool in 2016 when uncharted 4 came out everyone fawned over the graphics but its been the same graphics for almost a decade now thats why i really stopped buying sony first party games for the most part they are trying to become HULU lol 😆 so yeah not for me but sorry that happen to ya 😢 come to PC, LIFE IS BETTER 😊❤
I replayed this last month and I definitely feel the same as you. I’m very mixed on this game. When I’m kratos the game kicks ass and is up there with the 2018 game but the Atreus sections absolutely suck. The story arcs are boring and his combat is shit as well. I’m really going to struggle to play an only Atreus game spin off if that happens which there’s rumours of that happening.
Also the pacing of the game on the whole is all over the place.
That really sucks about the glitched item. I got the plat launch and had no issues, so bonuses why that’s happened for you

I was a big fan of the 2018 god of war but ragnarok bored me to tears. It only started to get fun when you unlock draupnir. I got the platinum for 2018 but ragnarok can get lost.

This was a perfect episode. Clips of the game to get you invested but not so much to drag on. Critique of both the game and the trophy list, all topped off by that dramatic finale.
Honestly Adam, while I didn't have the same struggle as you,I came out the other side feeling negative about Ragnarok. Those sections with Atreus went on for way too long, were utterly Pointless and are the reason I'll likely never play the game again. God of War (2018) however... Most likely.

I'm sorry you didn't get the platinum but it really added to the entertainment at the end there. I'm struggling to find enjoyment in games anymore so I think I'm going to call it quits at platinum #200 which gives me 10 more games.

Really accurate comment here. Atreus sections felt like nothing but padding, plus you couldn't even get through the collectibles without being subjected to 400 mini fights in-between each collectible, further padding the experience. Oh and of course Muspelheim was a grind that made the least of all sense. GOW 2018 was far superior to this one.

this sort of thing is why i try to keep manual saves at the start of every chapter of a game if possible cuz you never know when some nonsense like this might try to do you over

I’m the same as you I HATED that whole ironwood section with Artreus, initially it’s cool because visually it’s excellent but it’s just too long and too slow and I didn’t care either 😅

It’s boring mostly because the combat is repetitive as fuck, not very challenging, and there are no stakes because you don’t save it from any outside threat. It’s this protected little bubble.
So unfortunate. I just finished the platinum of this game myself, and I very rarely platinum games anymore. It’s strange that some of your critiques are the exact same gameplay loops as GOW 2018. The collectible system is the same and while mildly tedious, it’s not nearly as bad as some games. At least you can see the region breakdowns and the regions are usually pretty small, a beach here or a village there.
My problem with the bad collectibles is that there were bad in 2018 and the developers didn't make them better. Surely, they must know they suck and have a terrible travel system, but just did it again.
That is why I was particularly annoyed for Ragnarok, haha.
Impressed you were able to go through with this one, even though it bugged out. I played through the game and immediately stopped when I saw the same collectible slog as the first game. Completely skipped it this time around and don’t plan on going back.

Man I feel bad for you Adam, my experience with this game was spectacular, I had no gltiches and tho I feel you about the gateways, the collectibles weren't as bad for me, they were tedious and boring but felt rewarding to finish, regardless the glitch you got is horrible, I had not even heard of that glitch, my play through was seamless, you had it extremely rough, I really hope you can finish the platinum and find the courage to do ng+ man, this video itself feels tensioned and sour, a irregularity for your videos, I hope the next few treat you better man, cheers

You might already know this Adam, but I'll mention it just in case, there was supposed to be a GOW Norse trilogy, but that would've taken them 15 years in total, and they didn't want that, so Ragnarok leans really heavily on cutscenes/story to make up for what would've been a 3rd game.
I feel your pain with this game, as I've had a few glitches of my own, although not as bad yours.
I enjoyed 2018 more. GOW 2018 (10/10) Ranarok (9/10)
Highly recommend the DLC 'Valhalla'.
I heard about it once being a trilogy. Makes sense now why there were so many cutscenes and many feeling way too long. They were trying to cram two games worth of story into one.

Oh Adam. This one hurts... I've been saying it for a while, but collectibles in games are one thing. I mean really, what purpose do they serve aside from needless padding and artificial gameplay? But then to have trophies connected to them is just insulting. Let collectibles burn, they're genuinely a blight on modern game design.
This one was agonising to watch though. I'm absolutely devastated and this amplified my own personal burnout towards the new era GoW games.

I agree. So few games do collectibles well - Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is a rare example. There doesn't seem to be a point to most collectibles.

Wow.. I have never seen Santa Monica screw you so hard… This is why I heard that people were very harsh about the game’s story and especially the Platinum. No other Sony game I enjoyed that had a glitched Platinum. That is upsetting and disheartening to see for the first time, not get a Platinum.
But other than that, the execution was played out very well with the emotion, game opinion, and how much of a grind it is.
Really interested to see a Beyond Good and Evil episode since Ubisoft just announced the 20th Anniversary version of the game with a full Platinum. So satisfying.

Gutted for you with this one Adam. Don't blame you for not playing through again. As you've said you may end up hating it if you play anymore. Hopefully after giving it some time you'll want to go back to it (or maybe not 😂). The maze in the first one where you have to collect those Anchor of fogs (or whatever they're called 😅) almost broke me, so tedious. The maps in these games are abysmal. If developers insist on collectibles then they should be made as easy as possible. On another topic, knowing your love of Beyond good and evil, with the anniversary out now that contains a platinum, is there a chance that will sneaking into the schedule? Love this channel

Also I have funny story about game bugs. Back in the day in 2004 I think I had no internet and at one time I played Prince of Persia Warrior Within. It was my first POP game. My classmates finished this game without problem, but I had funny bug that after 1 boss fight(woman in black in some throne area) game prompts you to check new updated map and I skipped it so game ended up thinking that I am on the same route but way later in the game. At that point you have sword that breaks walls so my playthrough stopped at the unbreakable wall. Next time I played game without problems, on 3rd playthrough I finally understood why it was happening ))) So if you get to second encounter with Shadee check map after boss fight so game will update areas. Another stupid fail was that I didn't upload Rayman Legends save with 700 lums and lost it so challenges grind needs to be restarted :D

Yeah I was really disappointed with this game. I never even ended up beating it, and I’d been hyped for the platinum for years. It might sound a bit shallow, but Kratos not killing Thor or Odin, or getting Mjolnir, bothered me. The game devs said that that would’ve been too predictable, and it’s like “…well, yeah, because that’s how these games have always gone. Why is this suddenly an issue?” I didn’t buy a lot of the character moments, playing as Atreus felt like a chore that kept disrupting the more interesting stuff, and some of the areas felt like Doom arenas, of just walking into a big area with ramps and upper pathways and fighting monsters before moving onto the next one. I haven’t thought about the game in a long time but this video brought back a lot of memories. That’s an absolutely shameful bug for a AAA game that came out in November 2022. Fix your games.

This game was amazing besides the atretus part
This is probably one of the games i have the most mixed feelings about on one hand i think it is graphically stunning and the game play can be excellent however the story kinda left me hanging when compared too 2018. I loved god of war (2018) for its narrative it felt like a personal odyssey with these characters with excellent pacing throughout yet i felt like they lost what made the story special in Ragnarok it expanded but kinda lost its focus and the pacing in certain sections such as Jotunheim. Ive come to feel that it would have been a wiser decision to make a full trilogy for the norse saga and not try to condense such a complex narrative. Its still good though i just don't find that its on the same level as the first.

Hey Adam, love your videos generally and its always a highlight for me when i see a new one posted. However, i can't help feeling a little disappointed in this one. I platinumed Ragnorok last year and loved it totally. I fully appreciate the difference of opinion and completely love the honesty you have about your feelings towards the game, but this video didn't have your usual spark for me and felt a little forced (again understandable why).
Anyway, despite this, I am really looking forward to TLOU part 1 next! Keep up the great stuff

I do respect your opinion but I do heavily disagree. Not everything needs to be about Kratos. Maybe I only feel like this because I didn’t play the original trilogy so I don’t have as much of a connection with him as others do, but imo I feel like it’s ok to focus on other characters besides Kratos especially if they want to do a only arteus game in the future. It does suck you weren’t able to get it the platinum that really sucks. I am glad it didn’t bug for me cause when I got platinum I did it before you could skip cutscenes so it would have really sucked if that happened.

Yeah, I grew up with Kratos and adore the original trilogy - the first game especially. Kratos is my hero and I'm mainly just interested in him.

It is definetly a bit strange seeing you do everything needed for the platinum but still not getting it. I myself wanted to do Ragnarok later this year but rather just stick to playing it for the story now. To be honest though, the game was definetly dragging when it came to Atreus part. Boy was annoying me big time 😂. Hope you have a better time with TLoU Part 1

I feel your being a little unfair regarding the story, I thought it was amazing in all aspects, a little slow in some places yeah, but it would've been a major fault for people as well if they didn't explore atreus and the other characters. Also regarding the missing item, did you check the shops lost item section?

Damn that sucks, I mean what else can I say really? All that work, the hours put in and you get nothing good sir but hey at least you gave it your all and in the end even if this game diminished your sanity and enjoyment that's at least one thing you can be happy about right? Despite not getting the platinum it was a good episode to watch regardless and I hope this doesn't drag you down too much to stop you from trying again, not just with this game in hopes of finally unlocking the platinum in what I'm guessing will be in your own time now but with other games in the future too.

I loved this game personally do get the Artrues bit tho that sucked. Love the idea of the collectibles tho! Should be an option to turn on and they show on map 100% agree!!

I had my issues with Ragnarok too but by far the biggest one was the way the characters spoke. It's too modern. They speak like a bunch of California millennials not ancient gods.

Hi Adam just some friendly feedback. This game is like 18 months old and about 4 channels have already done this video. I think if you plan ahead and target new games on release the channel would do way better
Thank you for the advice. I prefer to take my time with episodes so I'd never have one out around the release unless I get an early copy - which I don't want. I wouldn't be able to be as critical about Ragnarok without feeling bad if Sony game me an early copy. It muddies the water.
Many of my most successful episodes, including the recent Witcher 3, have been made about games several years old. I prefer to just cover games that interest me. Some episodes do well, some don't, but I'm happy about the process.

It’s a shame how the journey came to an end . I found that this game dragged a lot and stopped playing half way through plus the collectible grind is not worth it anymore especially after doing hogwarts legacy collectibles grind I can’t face it anymore

Once I figured out what to do, I found Gna quite simpler than King Hrolf to be honest. Sucks to see a bug screw you out of a magnificent platinum that is GOW Ragnarok man.
Gna having similar moves to the previous Valkyries was cool. Yeah, bugged trophies suck.

Do you think that Platinum trophies can sometimes be detrimental to the overall enjoyment of a video game? Or, do you not feel as if you can have a fair opinion of a game without the platinum and your overall experience of it?
A good trophy list extend the lifespan of a game in a good way. Resident Evil and the extra challenges offered new ways to play for example.
Unfortunately, some games have terrible trophy lists which I wouldn't recommend.

Honestly the only side character content I was invested in was Sindri towards the end and that arc get’s barely any screen time. If they are setting up for an Atreus side game I’m going to have to skip.
I have zero interest in Atreus anymore. Would rather he not be part of future games.

I never understood pepple that rushed the story and end with just doing stuff to end up whinning about it, by the time i finished odin i had very little left to do
I didn't rush the story - I did just about every side quest along the way - although that isn't conveyed in the episode. Didn't have much to say about side quests, they were fine.
Some areas had collectibles that couldn't be accessed until you have a new ability or the spear. Decided to just wait until the end. Didn't expect it to be quite a slog though.

a real shame this one Adam, I remember on Twitter when it first happened to you. Very rare for Sony first party titles to remain bugged like this so long after release.
I personally really enjoyed the story, but can understand pacing may be slow and distract from Kratos a lot - I think it was important to build up all the other characters tho. As for the collectibles, you are completely right. Just loads of bullshit. I enjoy the lore aspect, but they could do with an optional setting to just show you them all on the map - or at least after you complete the story or something.
99% of people end up using guides, and it shows how pointless collectibles become when you lose all desire to look for them yourself.

Yeah, my friend had the same issue with the same trophy for this game. Removed the game and he never looked back.

Cyberpunk 2077 glitched out for me recently over 100 hours into the platinum, and I gave up- didn't want to do that again - it wasn't worth it in my opinion, I just went to another game I wanted to play instead of wasting time grinding away for a trophy i basically earned already.
You still earned it though (technically), which is still good. Looking forward to the next video! Keep it up :)

Yeah, it was one side quest that bugged out and technically never registered as finished. I only realized after doing every other side quest and storyline, and then said there's no point 😅.
I moved on and started playing through the first three God of War games for the first time (already played GOW PS4 and Ragnarok). I only just finished God of War 2 about an hour ago with the platinum (while watching this video!).
Personally thought the first game was better than the second in terms of story, but the second was better in gameplay (some levels confused me a lot though). Looking forward to GOW3 soon! :)

I'm OK, thanks for asking. This was just a rough episode to make - both recording and editing as I was really down on the game. It isn't something I'm used to.
Thankfully, after this I recorded The Last of Us Part I, which I loved. Then also recorded Devil May Cry 2...which was actually fun too. Despite what many think about the game, I liked it.
You'll see a drastic uptick in my mood when The Last of Us Part I is done in a few weeks.

Bit of a downer episode. Gutted you didn't let the platinum. I suggest you return to it or play it on and off till you can get it, even if it's some years from now. However that was not the worse part of this video. That was how much you hated the story. My heart broke when you showed a quick scene of Faye and Kratos where she gives him the speach about love and greif and you just said "I don't care" 💔 It left me cold. Still onwards and upwards The Last Of Us awaitings.

I feel for you Adam, I would've called it a day also. I've said it before and I'll say it again, the original trilogy are the better games. I'm like you, I'm here for kratos, but this game is the story of atreus. It feels more like an interactive movie than a game. Fortunately I was lucky to get the platinum trophy when it first came out. I have every god of way platinum, even the PSP games apart from god of war ascension.

@@AdamMcDermott yeah, I certainly didn't care for atreus, especially with the brat attitude. Alot of people don't like ascension, I can't really comment as I only played it one time when it first came out. I will get round to replaying it and see whether it is good or not.
I recently played Toy Story 2 and got the Platinum it was amazing just a fun nostalgic time with a very fun trophy list and you don't need a guide for it GOWR is a slog with way too many collectibles and as with your experience glitched trophies
I also think Toy Story 2 would be nice to platinum over this :)

My thoughts on the game were exactly the same as yours. I wanted to be Kratos! The game just ended up feeling like a slog for me. I much prefered the 2018 game over this one.
I also preferred 2018. Don't know why they thought folks would want to spend so much time playing as Atreus.

This game is so American that after the meeting with Thor and Odin in the shack, I started watching Sons of Anarchy instead.
That isn't a metaphor. I literally just stopped, and went looking for the American TV show about a biker gang.
And don't even get me started on the little black girl, or the EXTREMELY "suthern dwarf." I skipped or muted every part I could where the latter spoke.
What's wrong with the girl Personally, found her and Atreus boring.

@@AdamMcDermott To have a little black girl play a Norse Giant is beyond immersion breaking. And the fact that her relationship with Atreus and that gameplay was so dull and forces didn't aid matters.
The other one I mentioned was one of the characters in Freyr's camp. (I don't recall the specifics.) Her accent was so thick and fake that I bet even people in Louisiana would shudder at hearing it.
I can overlook everyone having an American accent in this game. (Though some sounded Scottish.) I don't expect the actors to try and do a Nordic accent. That would sound terrible so I'd rather they did the accent they were best at. But there is such a thing as taking things too far. And that one character was just terrible.

Everybody has that one game that frustrates them and is beloved by everyone else except them. For me, its Bioshock Infinite. Columbia was nowhere near as interesting as Rapture nor was the gameplay and the removal of survival horror elements was a bad decision but thats besides the point. This is a good episode because its authentic and shows some journeys are not always about the victories.
That's fair. I can understand not liking Columbia as much as Rapture.

@@AdamMcDermott For alot of people it's easier but for some they'd rather force themselves to like something as to not alienate or offend those who do enjoy the thing they dislike. The Last of Us remaster for PS5 being the next episode is a great choice because that is game you love and the updated trophy list makes obtaining the platinum much more easier and comforting than before with those multi-player trophies.

People need to see that the process isn't always perfect and delightful and that there can be frustrations and complications. That is gut wrenching. I have mixed feelings about this game myself.... had I been locked out of the plat I'd hate the game, that's how much it divides me. Open world emptiness and collectathon with many low points and some high points. I hope the trend of open world games slows down significantly... I'll never replay this game again and will be hesitant if there is any continuation of the story or a spin off. There should be a boss selection option to add some level of replayability. Ragnarok is the worst Sony AAA exclusive I've played - I preferred KZ Shadowfall which was a launch game and had a pretty good multiplayer.
