    Brilliant Steve, had all sorts of problems cutting on the table saw, currently using a bandsaw and jig on my thicknesser to finish off. Will be making one of these very soon.

      This makes it much easier, and more precise. I haven't regretted buying the vacuum pump, very useful new tool.

      its a great concept, and especially using the sandpaper to keep it from moving.

      @@JohnathonWhittaker My first attempt didn't have the grooves for the weather-strip tape. The vacuum crushed the tape so much that it didn't spring back right away. And if the wood wasn't thick enough it would bow inward under the pressure and the connection felt mushy. So the grooves and sandpaper made all the difference.

    It will be interesting to see what could be produced using a compound cut.

      Hi Wendy, making the jigs is not my favorite part either, but they are necessary. I've got a new idea for cutting the wedges I hope to have soon. Have you got a band saw and a router?

      @@Steve.Garrison Yes I have every tool LOL Including a lathe as I am also a wood turner and carver. Jigs just don't compute with me sometimes or it's just a mental block from not wanting to make them at all. Can you make one for me? How much would it be?

    Hello Steve. Lovely work. Just started watching your videos. Thought I could share a tip I saw on crimson guitars UA-cam channel. The video is called the greatest luthiers trick of all. Useful for holding wood in place, sandpaper to wood etc. I saw you use a glue gun in other videos but this is a good one for lots of applications. Maybe you already know but thought I’d share.
    Cheers.

      Thanks! That is a good tip I'll have to remember. I figured out how to take the sponginess out of vacuum clamping here and made it a rock-solid connection with the flick of a switch. I'm happy to eliminate hot glue from this jig.

    Have you considered making groves on the raised panel of the vacuum part? On a CNC bed they have a honeycomb pattern for effective vacuum hold down. Just a idea. I like your design.

    • @Steve.Garrison
      @Steve.Garrison  4 роки тому

      Mine has a piece of coarse sandpaper that it pulls the wood against to prevent slipping around instead of grooves. The clamping force is very strong, I can put the vacuum chuck face down on my table saw and it won't budge.

    • @kennethbrinker2801
      @kennethbrinker2801 4 роки тому

      @@Steve.Garrison I can see how the sand paper will work.Since the work is only contacting the top facets of the sand you have a lot of vacuum area.

    • @Steve.Garrison
      @Steve.Garrison  4 роки тому

      @@kennethbrinker2801 Right, you don't need very much airspace where the surfaces touch as long as you have enough area inside the weather-strip tape gasket. The wood being clamped does need to seat against a solid surface, so that contact needs to happen before the foam tape is fully compressed, otherwise the clamp action will feel mushy instead of solid. That's why I have the weather-strip tape in grooves - so it can't be fully compressed.

    Has anyone tried or recommend using a 12" dual bevel sliding miter saw instead of a table? Would you still use the jig or not since miter excels at angle cuts?
