Nkechi Nnachetta It's actually very subtle. I also hate love triangles, but the whole romance thing is really an extra thing in Chihayafuru and me being a romance junkie ended up watching it for the awesome story and for the athmosphere and even though the romance was a whole lot less than I expected and wanted - I loved the anime for the rest of its attributes. It's really good!
First of all: Mushishi, Monster and Cowboy bebop are really nice examples of anime for mature audience. All of them are fantastic. Monster is just a mind-blowing piece of work. Its amazing how they managed to keep one in suspense from the first episode onward, yet kept a credible/relatable atmosphere with characters that still have other issues in everyday life. Plus the 60s-70s european society is spot on in this show.
@@kaizu9964 it's a decent anime. The aspect that drew me in was the competitive nature of the sport. The characters are all written pretty well but it's their attachment to the game and desire to get better/win that really stands out.
For me it was Gundam Seed and Full Metal Alchemist on Toonami. I was already watching DBZ and Fist of the North star but I never knew they were anime, they seemed like another type of Transformers or G.I. Joe type cartoon.
chrisrey001 it’s a reference to the skit he did where he’s trying to explain his favourite anime to a friend and he starts getting bored and falls asleep.
So I decided to watch Chihayafuru based on your recommendation. I really love it! Thank you sharing it! The anime it reminds me the most of is one called "March Comes in Like a Lion" about a young pro Shogi player, and I get similar emotional experiences from it, and if you haven't seen it, I think you would find something you love in it : )
I also just finished binging Chihayafuru recently because of Prozd's recommendation, and it is absolutely incredible. I'm already rewatching it again, because I didn't want to move on to other anime after that lol.
@whいつも Honestly, I think it might be my #4 anime already. As long as the rest of the story remains the same quality, it's easily going to become one of my all-time favourites. I love sports anime for how inspiring and epic they can be, like you mentioned, and Chihayafuru is definitely inspiring, but what I find the most refreshing about it is how real the characters feel. I totally buy that they're all friends, and I love seeing how their interpersonal relationships and individual motivations shape their games. It's so well-written! I've thought about checking out the manga, but I'm so attached to the anime that I think I'm going to hold off and wait a bit longer. If a year goes by and there's no news about a fourth season, I'll have to move on and read it, but I'm holding out hope we get another season, since it is so beautifully animated and scored. And I feel the same way now when I find people who have watched Chihayafuru. I get so excited to discuss it, because it's so niche and obscure for most anime fans.
Sungwon: “So the kid he saved grows up to be......” Me: oh he probably is like the son of an emperor or some shit. Saving the kid probably turns out to be good Sungwon: “A SERIAL KILLER”
Even if it seems stupid if you watch the anime or read the manga the way the charachter is writen is awesome, he is one of the big reasons because monster is fantastic
Monster is soooo goooood i watched it a few years ago. Johan was terrifying and i really liked lunge's character development. Not to mention the art is amazing! Monster is just **chef's kiss**
Mushishi had always been on my #1 eversince I stumbled upon it in 2014. It's such a healing show I ended up using it as a bedtime show so I can sleep peacefully. It's really hard to find something similar. If the overall visual and feel, I'd highly suggest Saraiya Goyou although they're nothing similar plot-wise.
Hey ProZD. I usually dont comment on youtube videos but I just finished reading all of Monster after 4 days of watching this video and I just want to say that Monster was one of the most EMOTIONAL, ENTHRALLING, and just INCREDIBLE series that I have ever read. Thank you for recommending it and I look forward to enjoying the many more series that you have suggested.
I love Chihayafuru so much, the setting and how they take on Karuta is amazing, the soundtracks are amazing as well. But the fandom tends to focus so damn much on a triangle love and who would end up with Chihaya rather than her beautiful journey with Karuta
Johann has to die, he is a rabid dog. It's not the dog's fault it's been bitten, but in the end it doesn't matter if it continues to bite and kill people. And yet the show made me feel sorry for him. How twisted is that?
i got goosebumps the second the mushishi soundtrack came on. i love that show to pieces. its so relaxing. ive never seen a better example of a happy/sad show.
I'm currently watching silver spoon now and as a pre vet student myself it spoke to me personally in a way no other anime ever has. I hate that it took me so long to discover it but am so happy you talked about it.
i'm literally having an argument right now with someone at HorribleSubs that apparently got "Bored to death" watching Chihayafuru". Some people are just linear like that. To each his own i guess.
You are and have probably never even talked to a girl before. Sad, learn how to behave and then maybe one day some girl might not throw up at the sight of you.
1: steins;gate 2: hunter x hunter 3: full metal alchemist brotherhood 4: mob psycho s1,s2 5: a silent voice Edit, my current top 5: 1: hxh 2: monster (thank you for the recommendation sungwon) 3: steins;gate 4: samurai champloo 5: its a tie between attack on titan and oregairu, waiting for both animes final season to see which one takes fith place, AoT might even take my 4th place if the manga has an amazing ending
What about March comes in like a lion? It is similar in terms of how it takes a game (in this case shogi) and makes a good show out of it with how it follows the characters and a niche community for the in-group feeling.
I remember reading on Netflix that Mushi-Shi was an award winning anime. I gave it a try and remember being really confused watching it the first time. I watched 3 more episodes still confused of what the anime was about, but decided to finish the anime because I was already a few episodes in (Also knowing it was episodic helped too). It literally became my favorite everything in anime of all time. Music, intro, outro, character, aesthetics, story etc… After finishing it I remember looking up everything about the show. Amazingly what popped up was that a movie was coming out within 3 days and I was so hyped (Especially that timing though). I watched the movie and like always (for this anime) I stayed until the end music finished… then suddenly they put at the end “Season 2 of Mushi-Shi will begin in 3 months”. I was so shocked because season 1 came out in 2006 and then season 2 was 8 years later (2014). Season 2 outdid season 1. I didn’t think it could be done, but it was. Artland has my utter most respect hands down. They unfortunately got bankrupt shortly after, but before they did, they went out with a bang.
Couldn't agree more with everything you said about Chihayafuru, it's a masterpiece anime. I'm pretty sure it will always be among my top 5 anime. And now I must pick Monster up again!
Just finished watching the last episode of Silver Spoon (thanks ProZD for the recommendation!) and I must say... that is a phenomenal show! It's one of those anime that makes you want to keep watching one episode after another. Learning about farming was really cool, I laughed quite a few times and the character development was right on point. Now to try another one!
My first anime was Naruto but didn't knew as a kid that it was anime. Later when I really knew about anime then it was Accelerator, and since then he is my Favorite character (not the fav series tho). Since that time I haven't changed my pfp.
Thank you so much for mentioning Chihayafuru! It's an amazing anime, but it never gets the recognition it deserves, and when I try to recommend it to others, I only manage to make it sound boring as hell because "it's just a stupid card game" 😭
Silver Spoon was so great and wholesome! I haven’t watched the anime, only read the manga (didn’t completely finish it, i should remedy that). I remember when he got so attached with Pork Bowl, and when they made the cheese, and the pizza too! Mushishi definitely ranks in my top anime too! I random discovered it on Netflix one day and just absolutely fell in love. I love your description of it! Haven’t read or watched Monster, but it sounds super intriguing! Definitely sounds like one id need to follow up with a palate cleaner (maybe like Houkago Teibou Nisshi, so cute). something about your description reminds me of psychopass, which i really enjoyed too. Cowboy Bebob, i watched a few episodes, enjoyed it a lot, but i haven’t finished it. It’s definitely on my list, and the jazzy opening is kick ass. Do you like the show Firefly? It shares some similar themes I think. Definitely gonna have to add Chihayafuru to my watch list! Seems like it shares some similar elements to March Comes in Like a Lion, which is one of my current faves!
I like how much variety there is in your top anime and your choice in music! The Mushishi and Chihayafuru OSTs in the back were about to make me cry. They're so good! (People keep talking about all these mainstream shounen anime. For good reason, I'm sure, but I wish we had more Chihayafuru representation)
Just asking; have you ever watched Death Note? It's a bit like Steins;Gate, with all the plot twists and smart moves. If you like Steins;Gate you should DEFINITELY watch Death Note.
When I tell people I like anime the first assumption is Naruto, MHA, DBZ, and all the general shounen action people think of when they thing "anime". This top 5 is faaar closer to what I actually love but struggle to communicate cause most people wont recognize any of these shows other than Cowboy Bebop
Me watching this: I wonder if he has any bad opinions. First anime: Silver Spoon. Me: Well, no matter what the rest of the list is, he is truly a man of culture.
Is it Bakuman? I feel like Chihayafuru and Bakuman are pretty similar although Bakuman has no sport, it's just sounds like it. Even though Chihayafuru is categorized as a sport, I feel like Bakuman's sport-like element was more powerful. On the other hand, even though Bakuman has romance as it's main plot driving tool, it falls short compared to Chihayafuru's romance. I like both of them, but I think I favor Bakuman a bit more coz of my favorite character Nizuma. You guys should check both these anime. However do you guys know any other anime about making anime like Bakuman?
Thanks for mentioning Monster. It is also one of my all time favourite anime. It has a very philosophical foundation of whether there is a price on human life. I watched it 10+ years ago and still contemplate Tenma's decisions, and in the real world, our hospital triaging systems.
Pro, it makes me so happy that you love Chihayafuru just as I do! I watched it long ago when it first came out and I didn't think it would give me so many feels about an obscure japanese card game lol It's definitely one of my top animes
Sheogorath go with airing order so bake, nise, neko black, monogatari second season, I think hanamonogatri then tsukimonogatari then owarimonogatari then the three movies and owarimonogatari season 2

@@ChrisPBacon-lu6wd I can't say. ive read the manga but I've heard the anime was super loyal to it so it makes no difference. It is still enjoyable either way, so see what's works with you. It really is an amazing work. Enjoy it!

It's really good!
one piece is insanely overrated. The manga is alright tho
It's set in the 2000s
ok, im watching Monster, you talked me into it.

Oh I love Natsume's Book of friends!!!! Yessss
Binge watched Chihayafuru last week, now I'm behind on two classes and am reading manga for the first time in 5 years. You've ruined me.
So good?
@@kaizu9964 it's a decent anime. The aspect that drew me in was the competitive nature of the sport. The characters are all written pretty well but it's their attachment to the game and desire to get better/win that really stands out.
Cowboy bebop started my anime adventures when one night I decided to watch it on adult swim
Same thing for me. It will forever hold a special place in my heart.
The ending of that show broke me
For me it was Gundam Seed and Full Metal Alchemist on Toonami. I was already watching DBZ and Fist of the North star but I never knew they were anime, they seemed like another type of Transformers or G.I. Joe type cartoon.
I watched a few episodes and it's like each episode is something completely different. Didn't like that.
@@ChrisPBacon-lu6wd yeah it's episodic

Tanya Poi Dancer have you read the manga? I don’t really watch anime, but Mushishi is one of my favorite mangas.
FINALLY!!! PEOPLE WHO UNDERSTAND...It really feels great reading that there are actual people who know this beautiful anime!
I reminds me of Hikaru no go
Sungwon: “So the kid he saved grows up to be......”
Me: oh he probably is like the son of an emperor or some shit. Saving the kid probably turns out to be good
Sungwon: “A SERIAL KILLER”
Even if it seems stupid if you watch the anime or read the manga the way the charachter is writen is awesome, he is one of the big reasons because monster is fantastic
literally my thought process lol
@@iiiaaa5505 the implication of that comment is not that the plot seems stupid.
This was my reaction reading the manga 😂 it went entirely in a direction I was not expecting... so I had to keep reading!
The kid is written to be one of the most evil villains of all time, a monster as one would say.

5. Silver Spoon
4. Mushishi
3. Monster
2. Cowboy Bebop
1. Chihayafuru
1. Hunter x Hunter
2. Barakamon
3. Samurai Champloo
4. Dennou Coil
5. Haikyuu!!

Yay someone has HxH and Bara as top 2....Just like me❤️❤️😀✌️
Hunter x Hunter is the closest we will get to a perfect shōnen
Barakamon is flawless

@@TheJbrown60 oh fuck off.
i remember just loving the mushishi world, especially early in the morning with that serene intro music.
I love Chihayafuru so much, the setting and how they take on Karuta is amazing, the soundtracks are amazing as well. But the fandom tends to focus so damn much on a triangle love and who would end up with Chihaya rather than her beautiful journey with Karuta
Agreed. I'm fairly certain she's going to end up with neither and they're all just gonna end up as friends and rivals who love Karuta.

I love monster because of how emotionally connected you get with the characters in a short time, like the newspaper guy near the start😫
Johann has to die, he is a rabid dog. It's not the dog's fault it's been bitten, but in the end it doesn't matter if it continues to bite and kill people. And yet the show made me feel sorry for him. How twisted is that?

Sounds like a whole lot of not Jojo's Bizarre Adventure........
