My favorite dark aspect of The Wind Waker is how much Link's grandma is affected by the uncertainty of her grandchildren's safety. Like, she literally worries herself sick, and you can come back later to her having nightmares if I remember correctly.
She must care for them so much, and I'd hate to imagine my grandma worrying about me so much :(
Yes that's right! You need a fairy to heal her, another villager says she worries so much that she can't sleep & hardly eats anything. I love the focus on family in this game, the Aryll & Link + Grandma dynamic is so heartbreaking but you can make everything right again 😊 I feel bad only visiting her afterwards for a soup refill, though!
Surely if she DIDN'T care, that'd be darker...
@@reinforcedpenisstem You make a fair point 😅
Me too! She is such a loving grandmother, worried sick about their safety in a dangerous world. I always make sure to help her with a fairy on Outset Island before finding Jabun.
That music, man. Genuinely felt awful for the lady, even now as a grown ass man.
that crash is so creepy. also the cries of the spirits aboard the ship are actually from an unused Jabun sound file for when Nintendo wanted the game to be even darker, but couldn't fit that in due to time constraints.
This is my favorite Zelda game. It was the first one I played on my Wii U, and before Breath of the Wild, it probably did the best open world in the series. The Cel-Shading is still beautiful even today.
The darker aspects of the story are done in a way that I think is good for all ages: You appreciate them the older you get.
I agree with your point about WW probably being the best open world in the series until BotW! A Link Between Worlds is another strong contender, but nothing beats the freedom of sailing the open ocean. The weather effects really impressed me when I replayed the Wii U version for this video--I can recall fleeting moments like watching the sun rise on a sea platform or looting an enemy submarine during a thunderstorm in detail. The rain & the wind blowing at different intensities throughout the day too...I think the art direction is sublime and yes the Cel shading still holds up so well! Finding new ways to appreciate a childhood favorite as an adult is the best, so you're right: The Wind Waker's dark aspects are certainly a prime example of that!
@@ThaneGamingthis in depth reply is why I love ur channel
Here I thought I knew every nook and crevice of this game, which is one of my absolute favorites.
Then you go and fish up an old pot, and, well, I guess you learn something new every day.
I'm always on the hunt for new information about my favorite games! The amount of easily missable details in the 3D Zeldas specifically never seem to end, I've loved these games for years and I'm always learning new things! Glad I could share at least one 😅
@Thane Gaming Glad for it, too! Hope this series continues!
The freaking redead screams jumpscared me both times in the intro
I hate that scream so much
Oh no I had hoped it wasn't too loud, I adjusted the volume on them a few times 😅 sorry for the scare!
@@ThaneGaming no it's fine this is required to happen for a series like this. Also so we can all get flash backs of having nightmares to these things
@@Nintendofan1389 the collective Zelda-based nightmare all fans are guaranteed to share 😅

That's just my channel in a nutshell
Wind Waker is known for its charming and joyful vibes but it has such a dark and deep side as well. The story, lore, music, characters, side quests, etc… It’s absolutely amazing and I have it as the 2nd greatest Zelda game ever right behind Ocarina of Time.
That’s why I felt that the Wind Waker was like a Don Bluth movie.
lol love the quick use of the link barrel beatbox
8:59 - Sorry for pronouncing “Molgera” as “Molgeria” here! I’ve said the boss’ name like that in my head ever since I was a kid, and somehow only just realized that there’s no “I” in there…I’ll fix it for the full analysis.
ALSO, AdamTheGameBoy made a great argument against Koboli being a descendant of the postman in Majora's Mask: they're in different timelines. However, I think Termina can still exist in the adult timeline, and that the in-game text was meant to imply what I said in the video (whether the script writers were thinking of the timeline in the same way back then or not). What do you think?
Anyway, the second episode wrapping up The Wind Waker will be released in a couple of weeks, and it’ll be just as long (if not longer) than this first part!
Wind Waker: Zelda's cheerful apocalypse.
This is the only Zelda game i ever really played, on the Wii U, i was lost and confused for the longest time, before recently giving it a fresh start on a new file [the Wii U i got was pre owned, so there was already some save files there]. And man, this game, it's beautiful. The artstyle is incredible, the game, very enjoyable, the music? Incredible, i have the Mini Boss theme stuck in my head.
And that credits melody, wow.. i think i remember tearing up when i first heard it. And I'm not someone who cries easily!
Wind Waker is definitely up there for one of the games i ever played. Alongside Paper Mario, Castle Crashers, and the entirety of the LBP series..
Good games.
i found your dark aspects series from the mother videos and loved it and I never even saw all the TLoZ videos you've uploaded, i guess my binge starts now. Im playing all the games in chronological order right now so i'm probably gonna be consumed by LoZ content for awhile lol
These are all the Zelda videos I've put out over the years! ua-cam.com/play/PLK37aGUr9BMXkph12NTCSpf2hbQ_Xbsm_.html
Lots of Majora's Mask. As for Dark Aspects, my biggest video next to the MOTHER compilation is the analysis for Ocarina & Majora! I've also covered Skyward Sword for that series 😁
@@ThaneGaming the binge has TRULY begun
The mail man can't be descended from the Termina mail man no matter what. They are entirely different branches of the timeline.
That's an absolutely valid point, though I think it's possible that Termina exists in the adult timeline. I still think that the in-game text was meant to imply he's a descendant from that postman, because there were no other notable postmen in the Zelda series at the time and these two look identical.
While majoras mask happens in the child timeline do the fact the link in MM is still the hero of time and is the still a kid I think makes a case that if termina is a real place that all of its inhabitants that you see in MM should exist in the adult timeline since all of it denizens would have been born before the timeline splits off
Wind waker is still my favourite Zelda game so I'm all for this. 😂
I love it so much! There's no other Zelda that feels quite the same as this one--I love sailing as a way of traversing the world, it feels so good to map out each island & explore all the submarines + sea platforms 😊 all of the characters are so eccentric too, even moreso than other Zeldas which is saying a lot lol. Majora will always be #1 to me but this one comes close!
Speaking of octorok traps perhaps that why we never see the cute lil 2d octoroks in 3d zelda spoooky!
If ritos evolved from zoras, how are there both ritos and zoras in Breath of the Wild
I wondered that too, but it's called divergent evolution! Same with apes and humans
Nice ending!
hi, what do you know about the Yusikamis?? (likely the Japanese version I never played anyways)
Wind Waker is the poster child sleeper hit. I have never so quickly dismissed a game upon seeing it, for it to turn out years later to be maybe the game I've completed more than any other game. I love this game and I was so rude to it at first. Great video!
I'll wait until Part 2 to see if you cover a certain aspect, but it pertains to the kidnapped girls...
I have the script written out, but I don't believe I mention the kidnapped girls again--what aspect are you referring to?
@@ThaneGaming Early in the game, Quill says that girls have been getting kidnapped from all corners of the Great Sea, but we only ever see three girls, and two are from the same island. So what's been happening to the rest? Well, given that the room they're kept in can be flooded, I think I have a theory... (Then again, there are those other cells... but they're unoccupied...)
God, that bit about the Encyclopedia... Hate the book, Termina was always a parallel universe, was even said to be by Anouma at one point. The credits of the book don't even have most of the Zelda team credited like the others, book contradicts facts in other areas that were true for ages.
I am mixed on Encyclopedia, but mostly negative about it 😅 I love the developer commentary they included for each game, though the contradictory lore explanations elsewhere are egregious (they already did the "it was all a dream" thing better in another game; Termina being born from the Skull Kid's imagination does not add anything to Majora). I will still reference it when applicable, but the games/developer interviews > Encylopedia
“With the Wii U shop being put out of commission, that means you can’t buy this game digitally.”
Oof. Good call asking for it for Christmas when I got it, my GOD
Thank you the termina disappears retcon is god awful!
I mean termina has history prior to skull kid stealing majora so how exactly did majora create termina?
Also that just a cheap copy of the links awekening ending!
Why are you pronouncing Ariel like that like? Otherwise, I enjoyed the video.
Her name is spelled "Aryll" so it could go either way--I always said it as "Ariel" in my head too, though I make a habit of looking up pronunciations before doing these videos and the majority prefers "Ay-rill"
@@ThaneGaming wow, I can’t believe I was mistaken about that. All these years I thought she was the little mermaid. Sorry for my blunder
@@ThaneGaming
I’ve always said it Ar-rol
10:55 also known as bullshit
Oh my god, that redead jumpscream, I hope they don't return in Tears of the Kingdom
I kind of want them to return, I'd like to see what they'd look like in this style! They are a bit of a pain to fight though, so maybe they can be restricted to certain areas
didn't realize i was watching part 2 earlier LOL... watching this now too
I almost didn't split it into two parts, but I think I need to, creatively 😅 I still debate whether it's better to do this or spend another month to finish it all! You're awesome for going back and watching the first part
Ah yes, my first Zelda game!! By no means my favorite, but a great intro to one of my favorite franchises
Same! This and Mario Sunshine we’re my very first games. I was about 4 when they came out.
@@joshuakolton9955 You played The Wind Waker at 4? Wow.
Wind Waker wasn't the first Zelda game I played, but it's the first one I completed! My brothers and I all had our own save files, and we would always play together w/ one of us controlling the Tingle Tuner.
@@joshuakolton9955 I was playing games at 4 as well! Though I was 7 when those came out. Sunshine was my first GameCube game, I remember selling our N64 to get it.
recently i dusted off and installed my old wii, to replay some GC games not yet switchified. Prime 2 was first, currently going wind waker. I think twilight princess and eternal darkness are next. Or maybe some sunshine. And a quick double dash.
I have the Wii with wind waker HD but in disk form and BOTW digital
GOAT series.
18:08 I have....NEVER seen that before. Very cool.
Glad I bought the hd version for 20$ back in the day
Me too! I had a Wii U at launch but sold it before I got the chance to play this game, then towards the end of the system's life cycle I bought it again + this game for $20! Never got to experience Tingle Bottles though...
I wish Nintendo would bring back Selects, but I know they're not going to because of how well every Switch game sells, even 6 year old ones for full price 😅
Yea Nintendo be no entiendo, sometimes so we just hope for the best.
@@rig7078 "Nintendo be no entiendo" is amazing 😆
Great video
idk if i’m just biased because it was my first zelda back in the day, but windwaker is just so timeless and charming. i love everything about it. even the god awful triforce charts section :’)
Love the Zelda content buddy! Hope all is well!
Thank you man, there'll be more to come for sure! All is well here, hope the same for you ✊
4:20 the zora only lived in the ocean in majora's mask if i remember correctly, so they never actually lived in seawater. they only lived in fresh water, because majora's mask only happened in the hero of time's head.
Zora live in the sea in Oracle of Ages, too!
Zora can live in salt water?
In Majora's Mask, they live primarily in salt water at Great Bay! There's also the Oracle of Ages Zora that live in the sea
