Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli
Radio recording, London (30.VI.1959)
This would have been one of greatest studio recordings, and it's live.
When I was a kid, I adored Horowitz, I guess I still do, but I actually think Michaelangeli was probably a better pianist. Everything he did was perfection.
ABM not The greatest! The greatest pianists of All Time Are really Artur Rubinstein ( The God) Grigory Sokolov ( The Titan The Giant of The piano) Emil Gilels ( The King) Wilhelm Kempff Maurizio Pollini Vladimir Ashkenazy ( The most beautiful volcanic piano sound) Sviatoslav Richter Stanislav Igolinsky ( better than Lipatti) Mikhail Pletnev ( The most Powerful Prokoviev piano concerto no 1) Solomon Cutner ( The structure of music) Maria Grinberg Natalia Trull ( Prokoviev piano concerto no 3!!) ABM played The second-rated concertos like Mozart piano concerto no 15 Haydn concerto G major Liszt piano concerto no 1! ABM never played The Best piano concertos like Chopin 1-2 Brahms 1-2 Rachmaninov 1-3 Mozart 24 Because ABM The Great machine player! ABM The Mechanical King!!
Did you forget Glenn Gould? The best interpreter of Bach! 🎶💙
One of the best versions I've ever heard if not the best!
Absolutely agree! You can't just pound away at Chopin..finesse is the order of the day.
ABM was a gigantic interpreter of the large-scale Chopin compositions. His later-in-life performances of the Scherzos are severely intense, disciplined yes, but driving and pushing deep into the implicit tragedy and sadness of the Chopin ethos. Thank you for sharing this special performance.
Insuperabile!!!!
From the very beginning you enter the world of the greatests ever, incomparable piano mastery
Perfect rendition of Chopin sonata op.35 that I'v ever heard!!!! Goosebumps ....
Probably the best perfomance I've ever heard of this wonderful piece! Thank you for sharing!
Still one of my favorite performances of this work, uncompromising and with hidden pain everywhere.
There are very few who can truly approach this work. You have to leave everything behind, all hurdles, everything, so that the spirit of the work shines through. What a gigantic interpretation. The tension during the breaks is unbelievable. This sonata by Chopin, which to a certain extent breaks with the further development of the classical sonata, is a self-awareness of the brilliant composer that is shocking and rousing. In many moments it is a beauty that is not of this earth.
Very nice comment. This music really is transporting. I can't imagine tiny, tubercular Chopin knocking this out of the park as ABM does. Now Lizst.....oh my goodness! What a thrill that would have been or do you think he would have been less disciplined in the details in an effort to dazzle?
He plays so dark... and weaves such mystery...
Lui solo, unico, divino
What a wonderful rendition of the last movement - teriffic
Grazie al Maestro Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli per questa Marcia Funebre
Extraordinario Michelangelli. Qué dominio técnico y sensibilidad
What distinguishes Michelangeli the most is the other worldly, ethereal, spiritual quality of his realization of the score. It’s the most haunting IMO.
So passionate and dramatic playing
the great in performances of Chopin's Piano Sonata No. 2.
Beautiful and repeating the opening coda is perfect
Echt verwechselbar!
Oh my God, he is playing the funeral march (introductory part) like a military march!
Beautiful ! Thank you for posting !
mind-bogglimg ..........................
Michalengeli is so cool
Rich and thoughtful interpretation.
I watched the music travel from his fingertips to the keyboard
Eeeeeelegant!!
Le sue dita sono mosse da Domineddio...
Rachmaninoff and then Horowitz above all the others in this work! 👌🏻
23:55 Wow I think that's the first time I've ever heard Michelangeli play a wrong note, and it's not even a hard section.
Oh My GOD! Is it a good thing to say? To mention? To think about?
Yeah, but he played 23:54 minutes of not-so-easy music before that moment, so your argument is slightly invalid
I like Pogorelich the most, this performance is quite impressive but very rushed
Ashkenazy's is the best; passionate, dramatic, and magical.
he is way too fast
il rigore assoluto
Zimmerman an d Pires seem to have more to say . Zimmerman and Kissin make frightening music of the firts mov and scherzo.Zimmermans Finale is the best he finds the secret .Horowitz was a disappointment here.Rach is deservedly famous but I would rather hear many more times Zimmerman ! Gilels I dont know what to expect.Ihink they have very different ideas about Chpin and what is permissable and stylistically suited to his music .Isay imagination is the test ! Richter is always recorded so badly . Does he have ideas .the playing will amaze pianists who really know the instrument . Istudied this sonata but play poorly and much is a secret to me but i notice pedaling and voicing .Would like to hear Cherkassky in this !
In my opinion, Gilels has no right to be anywhere near Chopin. And I think the atrocious quality of the Richter recordings adds to the aesthetic of it.
Have you heard Richter playing this sonata?
This is the best Chopin Op.35 - ua-cam.com/video/x6GZ6xeGnJQ/v-deo.html, but Gilels comes a close second.
Guil Gaylord - Always so perfect, including in torrential passages. But compare Cortot in 1933.
That Cortot recording is the best one ever of this piece
