  • On my way back from an appointment, I spotted the Camp Chase trio of rebuilt GP-9s sitting in their pen close to the Hollywood Casino on the Camp Chase Railway's system.
The lead loco appears to be a pretty standard GP-9 rebuild with a chopped nose on the short hood. 7042 and 7076 carry what appears to be an Alco cab, class lights and fuel tank, while 4618 looks like a pretty common GP-9R. I've never had a chance to see these up close (I was on public property). If anyone knows about the units, please post in the comments. Not the best part of town, so I didn't want to hang around and bring too much attention to myself.
*So** After some research, these are all former Canadian National units - all rebuilt GP-9s of different classifications. Unit 7042 was the final unit in a group of GP-9 rebuilds for Canadian National classified as GS-418B. Unit 7076 was rebuilt in 1993 and that class of rebuilds was classified as GS-418C. Unit 4618 was originally a Grand Trunk Western unit, rebuilt in the early '90s for Canadian National and classified GP-9R.
CN nomenclature is as follows: General Motors (GM, GMD, EMD) "G" ; Switcher "S"; # of axles "4"; Horsepower rounded to two digits "18"
So a GS-418C is a rebuild off a GM donor to be used as a switcher, has four axles and approximately 1,800 horsepower with the C denoting the third group or batch of rebuilds in the class.
Unit 4618 is classified as a GR-417A. GM chassis; Road Switcher; 4-axle; 1,700 hp; 1st batch of units in the class.

The Camp Chase Railway (reporting mark CAMY) is a short-line switching and terminal railroad in and near Columbus, Ohio, United States, running past the former Camp Chase. The company was formed as the Camp Chase Industrial Railroad in 1994 as a spin-off of Conrail. Through trackage rights, the railroad interchanges with Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX at Buckeye Yard. The Camp Chase bike trail follows alongside the railroad for 12 miles and is one the few trails in the United States that runs within an active railroad right-of-way. Through trackage rights, the CCRA interchanges with Norfolk Southern Railway and CSX at Buckeye Yard. The railroad also generates income by storing cars along unused portions of their tracks. The railroad serves a number of customers including a transloading facility, major agri-businesses, an ethanol plant and, until it closed, the printing plant for The Columbus Dispatch. In 2013, the Camp Chase Railway ran approximately one train a day at less than 10 miles per hour (16 km/h). The company's tracks end in Lilly Chapel.
The Lake Erie & Midwestern Railroad is a free-lanced O Scale model railroad that takes place over the last 50 years, or so. Set in the midwest, between Chicago and Pittsburgh, the majority of action occurs in the triangle between Toledo, Cleveland and Columbus, OH. You can find modern fast freights with 6-axle GE and EMD diesels in consist as often as old Alco and Baldwin switchers shoving freight around the spurs to the various industries. It's a great hobby and we're excited to share the progress on the construction of our layout with you.

hello le& m rr !! thank you so much for the great shots !!! i am not an o scaler, but recently purchased 2 ho cn gp-9's for my bprr layout and am planning on some weathering soon. it is people like yourself that do these kind "little" things in their spare time that help us modelers out tremendously.... i am now sure to get at least some excellent detail/weathering points from your up-close shots !!! i owe you several cold beers and a nice plate of fresh, hot chicken wings, as i live somewhat close to buffalo,ny., the home of the original, and best, chicken wings on the planet !!! blessings to you, lake erie & midwestern rr !!!

Unless you're literally standing on the tracks, the area on either side of the right of way is public. I was in a retail parking lot - on the other side is a walking path.

Absolutely. Without the old legacy rebuilds, we lose touch with railroading history!

The Canadians have a somewhat different 'styling' preferences than most US roads.
