I am 53, and die-hard Denver fan since the age of 12. I watched all 3 of those great Denver-Cleveland playoff games. And obviously, I jumped up in celebration when Earnest fumbled- after all, it was against my beloved Broncos. What I also remember at the time was thinking "Man, that sucks I kinda feel bad for him" as a kid. Fast forward to present day as an adult, and just watching the man who fumbled that ball, bear his soul, looking straight into the camera, and I'm actually tearing up. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him and others who have had the horrible misfortune to be remembered for one bad moment. What that must do to a man- the feeling that he let down a his team, his fans and himself- I cannot fathom. And it is constantly brought up and on film. To the warriors who have had to deal with catastrophic heartache- The Byner's, Bill Buckners's, Scott Norwood's, Gary Anderson's- who have had simply brilliant careers and big moments overshadowed by one terrible moment, my heart goes out to you. All those teams aren't even in positions to win without you, and those plays are not your definition. You are all amazing. Thank you for your heart and love of the game.
As a lifelong Steeler fan, I remember watching this game. Cleveland fell behind 21-3 cause the defense couldn't stop Elway. Earnest Byner played his tail off in the second half, he's the main reason they climbed back into the game. The defense couldn't make stops, force turnovers nothing, so you can't blame Byner. I have tremendous respect for Byner and I would love to have the chance to meet him.

I was born a Broncos Fan and was at this game as a 13 or 14 year old and was sick as a dog. My Dad kept asking me if I wanted to go home, but I was not leaving that game. I felt like I was cheering just as loud as anybody there and being so joyous that the Broncos won! Watching this video gives me a whole new perspective on this game. Now, at the age of 49 and a recovering alcoholic, I can understand trying and working on what you thought of as failures and mistakes. Nothing Byner did that day was a failure or a mistake in my eyes. He played in a game that he worked so hard his whole life to play in and he played admirably! Only in his eyes, did he fail or make a mistake. I can understand that thinking. Fumble or no fumble, he did something that day that only he could have done. I Love his attitude about what happened and how he uses that to succeed from that point on. That team may have deserved to play in the Super Bowl that the Broncos ultimately were destroyed in. The way he described how that Browns team played as a team and were so in tune with each other, makes me think that they would have had a better chance in that Super Bowl. I am a fan of Earnest Byner because of this game and the fumble. How ironic it is that a Hero like Byner can come out of losing a game and become a Hero to fans of the opposite team and not because the opposite team won, but because of how he has lived his life since then because of it. It was a team loss - the fact that people blame Ernest is b.s. all the way. They played from behind the whole game and even if Ernest scores Elway gets the ball back (who knows what would've happened). I had nothing against Denver but was cheering for the Browns in hopes for a bit of redemption from year before. I was already let down by the first game (Vikings vs Redskins) where the Viking's made one of the dumbest play calls in the final seconds and lost the game. This story replay is like Ernest is in a zen moment the way he tells it - totally awesome video. This man took the team on his shoulders in the closing minutes and his determination showed. Still, team loss. Final note: Ernest looks like he could still play....damn! plus one more I can't imagine what Browns fans are going through right now send this team a miracle!

Earnest, you are a strong man to speak about this from the heart. As a 17-year-old watching that game, I felt some of the pain. I wish I could take more of the pain away now. I’m tearing up a bit. It may sound strange, but moments like the fumble are what cemented the love for the browns in my soul. When they hoist the Lombardi, it will be the greatest release of joy and emotion. I hope Ernest has a prime seat in the parade.
I am a life long Cowboys fan. I had a lot of respect through the years for certain players in the NFL and wished the Cowboys had them on our team. You sir, were one of them.

Had a chance to talk to earnest at a game more than a decade ago. Sitting in the end zone with my dad before the game and earnest walked by. We didn't recognize him until it was too late. So badly wanted to share that he was a part of one of the greatest sports moments I experienced with my dad. Fumble or not, it was a great moment. We celebrated around the house thinking we won the game. That moment was full of true ecstacy. We eventually figured out what happened, but wouldn't trade that moment for the world. Thanks for being a part of that memory (and many others from those great years). Back then, I thought those types of moments happened all the time.
Earnest Byner will always be remembered for being a Cleveland Brown, but we Redskins fans will always be thankful to him for helping us be one of the most dominant teams in history in the 1991 season - 14 - 2 regular season, cruised through the playoffs, and winning Superbowl XXVI
I am a Browns fan but have always sort of liked the REDSKINS. Thank you for crushing Elway in that SB. I was thrilled for EB and the 'Skins in 91. He was such a great runner those years. It was nice though that he was able to come back to Cleveland. Yes, in my mind he wears number 44 but I think he was at his best wearing 21 for you guys. Watching that game with my family (my brother was home on winter break) and my best friend, who was a Broncos and 49ers fan, it was brutal... I initially cheered when I saw him tumble into the endzone, because, the tv angle was from the back, so I couldn't see where the ball had been punched out, lying on the field, where the other defenders pounced on it. I can still hear Steve's cackling laughter and all 5 of our hearts lying on the floor... All my Dad said was, "Go home, Steve...right now." I was ready to stab him, my dad wanted to shoot him, and my mom was picking out a place in the backyard to hide his body. :-P That year, the Broncos went on to play against the 49ers, who were LOADED... Montana and Young both had unbelievable years, and Rice shredded the Bronco secondary... The final score was 55-10. Had the Browns played them, it would've been just as bad.

Mr. Byner, as much as those late 80s Browns losses hurt me as a fan, I am sure that it's nothing compared to what you have had to deal with all these years. The reaction he had for the 60 seconds following the fumble showed you who he was (this video only confirmed it). He rolled over with shock/grief for about 3 seconds in a manner that acknowledged who he let down (teammates, coaches, even fans) and then got up and walked with shoulders back and face mask up acknowledging that what’s done is done and I will face the lumps that come my way. This. Is. Leadership.

A guy like Schottenheimer doesn't get emotional or just say things like this for no reason. No real fan of any team gets upset with any player that leaves their heart and soul on the field like Byner did. Real fans pick up a man like this for everything he gave them. The shot of him laying there after the play is powerful. The shots of Kosar and other teammates consoling him are powerful as well. It's the painful luck of the draw in sports sometimes. Credit to Byner for having the mental strength to not let it define him like so many would.
To further illustrate how life can be crazy, unfair and random, two weeks after this game, in Super Bowl XXII, the Denver Broncos, were eviscerated by a running back who was out of the league within 2 years. So much glory that back received, and so much scorn for Byner. The man in this video has come to grips with that and has succeeded in spite of his fumble.

Redemption would happen in 1994-1996 when he became a Cleveland Brown / Baltimore Raven again. Very powerful retrospective. This is football ladies and gentlemen!
Timmy Smith was an unknown then, and is still a virtual unknown now...Because outside of the Washington [fanbase of the 80's] not a lot of people know much about him, In fact nearly everyone's focus to this day was about Doug Williams and as for Mr Smith the then {Redskins} offensive line {The Hogs} gets more love than him.

I had the pleasure of meeting earnest in 2014. Extremely underrated running back and I thought he was very nice and humble as well. Trading him was another asinine move by Art.
But karma worked out for Earnest. He ended up winning a SB with the Redskins and I think most football fans could tip their hat to Earnest for becoming a champion.
Wow! As a lifelong Broncos fan I have an incredible amount of respect for Earnest Byner. I wish he had not fumbled. I remember screaming in joy when the play happened, but a short time after wishing he wouldn’t have fumbled because of the pain you could see in his face on the sideline. He played a brilliant game, which is largely forgotten now because of The Fumble. Had he scored instead, I believe Elway would have driven Denver down the field into field goal range with just a minute on the clock, and it would have been known as “The Drive II”. I guess the Houston game would have been The Drive III. Regardless, it takes a big man to face his failures head on, and Earnest Byner will forever be one of my favorite players. Let’s not forget the man went on to have a great career with the Redskins after the pain he suffered with The Fumble.

That iconic shot of Bernie with his arm around Byner’s shoulder….gets me every time 😢 I was in college at the time and after the game ended, I wandered around campus for hours. The stars had seemed so aligned for Kosar and the Browns to do in Denver what Elway and the Broncos had done to us the year before. Somewhere, there’s an alternate universe where Byner doesn’t fumble, the Browns force overtime and go on to win. The decades long ripple effect that would have had… 😞

This is true, I never realized it until watching a TV show on the subject and Coach Marty Schottenheimer pointed it out, I cannot watch that play since then without seeing #84 fail to make the block on the man who knocked the ball out of Byner's hands.

I will never forget that moment. I was 11 years old and had just really started watching football 3 years prior to that. My dad was dropping me back off to my mom. We were driving and listening to the game on the radio. The announcer called the handoff and was saying he was at the 7, the 6, the 5, the 4, the.....fumble. I was heartbroken. Keep in mind I was 11 and life's priorities were way different. I bet my father my weekly allowance and lost it lol. I could only imagine how he felt. Regardless of that play, I am honored to say the EB wore the orange and brown. He will always be part of the Dawg Pound. Somebody else had mentioned how this was a team loss and that could not be any more accurate. This is a very similar incident to the missed field goal in Chicago a few weeks ago. Everyone wants to blame Parkey, but he had already accounted for 9 of the 15 points that had been scored to that point. I'm just glad that social media did not exist back then.

You were great, and I appreciate your contributions to the Browns and to football. My favorite game of yours was 1988 week 16 against Houston when the Browns came back to win in a snow storm. It may sound strange, but moments like the fumble are what cemented the love for the browns in my soul. When they hoist the Lombardi, it will be the greatest release of joy and emotion. I hope Ernest has a prime seat in the parade.

I am a life long Cowboys fan. I had a lot of respect through the years for certain players in the NFL and wished the Cowboys had them on our team. You sir, were one of them.

21-3 down yet this team fought hard and had a lot of resolve, even if "the fumble" happened. I love how Byner is so retrospective of a definitely difficult game to talk about. He was so epic in so many ways for this Cleveland team.
Had a chance to talk to earnest at a game more than a decade ago. Sitting in the end zone with my dad before the game and earnest walked by. We didn't recognize him until it was too late.
So badly wanted to share that he was a part of one of the greatest sports moments I experienced with my dad. Fumble or not, it was a great moment. We celebrated around the house thinking we won the game. That moment was full of true ecstacy.
We eventually figured out what happened, but wouldn't trade that moment for the world. Thanks for being a part of that memory (and many others from those great years). Back then, I thought those types of moments happened all the time.
Earnest Byner will always be remembered for being a Cleveland Brown, but we Redskins fans will always be thankful to him for helping us be one of the most dominant teams in history in the 1991 season - 14 - 2 regular season, cruised through the playoffs, and winning Superbowl XXVI

I was thrilled for EB and the 'Skins in 91. He was such a great runner those years. It was nice though that he was able to come back to Cleveland. Yes, in my mind he wears number 44 but I think he was at his best wearing 21 for you guys. I'm glad he was able to be such an important part of that Championship run in 91.

Watching that game with my family (my brother was home on winter break) and my best friend, who was a Broncos and 49ers fan, it was brutal... I initially cheered when I saw him tumble into the endzone, because, the tv angle was from the back, so I couldn't see where the ball had been punched out, lying on the field, where the other defenders pounced on it. I can still hear Steve's cackling laughter and all 5 of our hearts lying on the floor... All my Dad said was, "Go home, Steve...right now." I was ready to stab him, my dad wanted to shoot him, and my mom was picking out a place in the backyard to hide his body. :-P That year, the Broncos went on to play against the 49ers, who were LOADED... Montana and Young both had unbelievable years, and Rice shredded the Bronco secondary... The final score was 55-10. Had the Browns played them, it would've been just as bad.

I was pissed at this guy for years afterwards as a kid. Looking back, the Browns don't sniff the playoffs without this guy. How can you be pissed at a guy that always leads your championship caliber team in rushing AND receiving?

I was pissed as well and cursed his name for weeks!
But if you look at the replay of the fumble if Webster Slaughter makes a block instead of standing there, then there is no fumble.

You are one of the main reasons we were even in that game and your heart as a competitor is absolutely legendary in Cleveland Browns history. The reaction he had for the 60 seconds following the fumble showed you who he was (this video only confirmed it). He rolled over with shock/grief for about 3 seconds in a manner that acknowledged who he let down (teammates, coaches, even fans) and then got up and walked with shoulders back and face mask up acknowledging that what’s done is done and I will face the lumps that come my way.

No real fan of any team gets upset with any player that leaves their heart and soul on the field like Byner did. Real fans pick up a man like this for everything he gave them. The shot of him laying there after the play is powerful. The shots of Kosar and other teammates consoling him are powerful as well. It's the painful luck of the draw in sports sometimes. Credit to Byner for having the mental strength to not let it define him like so many would.

To further illustrate how life can be crazy, unfair and random, two weeks after this game, in Super Bowl XXII, the Denver Broncos, were eviscerated by a running back who was out of the league within 2 years. So much glory that back received, and so much scorn for Byner. The man in this video has come to grips with that and has succeeded in spite of his fumble.

Does anyone remember that Earnest Byner became the leading rusher for the 1991 Washington Football Team (Redskins) and won Super Bowl XXVI? Redemption would happen in 1994-1996 when he became a Cleveland Brown / Baltimore Raven again. Very powerful retrospective. This is football ladies and gentlemen!
Timmy Smith was an unknown then, and is still a virtual unknown now...Because outside of the Washington [fanbase of the 80's] not a lot of people know much about him, In fact nearly everyone's focus to this day was about Doug Williams and as for Mr Smith the then {Redskins} offensive line {The Hogs} gets more love than him.

I had the pleasure of meeting earnest in 2014. Extremely underrated running back and I thought he was very nice and humble as well. Trading him was another asinine move by Art.
But karma worked out for Earnest. He ended up winning a SB with the Redskins and I think most football fans could tip their hat to Earnest for becoming a champion.
I wouldn't call it asinine. I felt Modell wanted to get Earnest out of there. He needed a new environment.
Wow! As a lifelong Broncos fan I have an incredible amount of respect for Earnest Byner. I wish he had not fumbled. I remember screaming in joy when the play happened, but a short time after wishing he wouldn’t have fumbled because of the pain you could see in his face on the sideline. He played a brilliant game, which is largely forgotten now because of The Fumble. Had he scored instead, I believe Elway would have driven Denver down the field into field goal range with just a minute on the clock, and it would have been known as “The Drive II”. I guess the Houston game would have been The Drive III. Regardless, it takes a big man to face his failures head on, and Earnest Byner will forever be one of my favorite players. Let’s not forget the man went on to have a great career with the Redskins after the pain he suffered with The Fumble.

That iconic shot of Bernie with his arm around Byner’s shoulder….gets me every time 😢 I was in college at the time and after the game ended, I wandered around campus for hours. The stars had seemed so aligned for Kosar and the Browns to do in Denver what Elway and the Broncos had done to us the year before. Somewhere, there’s an alternate universe where Byner doesn’t fumble, the Browns force overtime and go on to win. The decades long ripple effect that would have had… 😞

This is true, I never realized it until watching a TV show on the subject and Coach Marty Schottenheimer pointed it out, I cannot watch that play since then without seeing #84 fail to make the block on the man who knocked the ball out of Byner's hands.
60+ years a Browns fan and this broke my heart but Earnest was one of the best and I still love that man. I was conflicted that day but over time I get it. Earnest was awesome and still is. It isn't what life throws at ya. It's how you work through it that means something. Good job Earnest
I will never forget that moment. I was 11 years old and had just really started watching football 3 years prior to that. My dad was dropping me back off to my mom. We were driving and listening to the game on the radio. The announcer called the handoff and was saying he was at the 7, the 6, the 5, the 4, the.....fumble. I was heartbroken. Keep in mind I was 11 and life's priorities were way different. I bet my father my weekly allowance and lost it lol. I could only imagine how he felt. Regardless of that play, I am honored to say the EB wore the orange and brown. He will always be part of the Dawg Pound. Somebody else had mentioned how this was a team loss and that could not be any more accurate. This is a very similar incident to the missed field goal in Chicago a few weeks ago. Everyone wants to blame Parkey, but he had already accounted for 9 of the 15 points that had been scored to that point. I'm just glad that social media did not exist back then.

Trying to dig out of a hole like that in the playoffs to a playoff team is almost impossible! The turnovers and poor play in the first half is why we lost that game ! We had a shot and Denver got lucky to get away with a win! So sad the browns so deserved to be in atleast 2 Super Bowls!

I met him years ago at raquet time a Fittness facility. He was on a stationary bike and as got on another bike I said if it weren’t for you the Browns wouldn’t have been in the game! Thank you Ernest for having a big heart!!!
