- Its easy to make your own self watering system for growing microgreens. In this video I'll show you how to take wicking rope and food take out containers to create a bottom watering system to grow microgreens. I planted Red Russian Kale in these containers and they came out beautifully!

I use these and love them. They are perfect for single people who can't use hugh trays of microgreens. They allow me to grow personal use amounts of my favorite micros & CONTROL each type individually, which can't be done if you grow several varieties of greens in one big tray. They also fit perfectly in those suction cup acrylic window shelves!
I've used mine over & over again for the last year & they're still in excellent shape.
Your DIY is good but not everyone has a lot of processed or prepared foods so they'd have to buy those deli containers & wicking material anyway at similar costs.

Great video! I use strips of cotton fabric to make wicks. I thread them through the holes with a crochet hook. I like that because the fabric lays flat. But it's not really reusable.

Another excellent video, thanks! I've recently been experimenting with those take-out trays, but instead of wicking rope, I just thread paper towels through slits in the lids and use no soil at all! So far it has been working quite well.
Thanks for the comment Andrew. Can you do a side by side comparison with soil and with just paper towels and see if there is a difference? I think the stems are thicker when the microgreens have soil to root themselves into, they seem to grow thinner on the paper towels, but I'm not sure. Also do you give the plants some nutrients if you are only using paper towels and water? Thanks Andrew!
@@TikkiOOO I should do more scientific experiments like you, running multiple trials at once and changing only one variable at a time. My current approach of changing all the variables at once doesn't lead to good conclusions ;-) I'll try to run an experiment with vs. without soil, though I'm hoping to avoid soil as I never seem to be able to cut the greens without picking up a little soil here and there. So far, though, a SuperFood Microgreen Mix worked great, broccoli sprouts are doing well so far, flax seeds seem promising if a bit thin, 8 year old black mustard seeds sprouting but slowly, 10 year old (!!!) yellow mustard seeds are going nowhere, and chia seeds have sprouted but are going slower than I expected. In the broccoli sprouts, I put a few drops of MiracleGro into the water, but other than that have only used filtered tap water with no other nutrients. I'll report back if I manage to conduct a useful experiment with soil vs. paper towel vs. paper towel + nutrients.

I am doing the same thing but with paper towels. Sure they cant be used more than twice maybe. I have ordered some of that cord though as it looks like it could last longer than the paper towel.
Yes the cord lasts "forever" you just have to wash it. You could use cheesecloth as well, anything that will absorb the water and act like a wick. Have fun, and thanks for the comment!

That's an awesome way to reuse containers! I wonder if you can grow bunches of cilantro like that not like micro greens.
I'm sure you can grow baby greens, or if you use a deep enough container something bigger. The wicking rope really works well! Thanks for the comment!
yeah i'm a penny pincher i bought those black pre meal containers 2 for $1.25 from the dollar tree (sad the price went up) anyway perfect size for a beginner like me 😊but better to use a Soldering Iron so they won't break or split

Thank you for the video, Tikki. I wonder if you could use just the paper towels without the soil, and the wick rope would keep the paper towels wet.
Thanks Sheri 0 for the question, yes, it would work. I've grown broccoli microgreens on paper towels and on cheesecloth, and it grows fine....but I beleive it grows better in a medium like coconut coir or even soil. The roots have something more to hold on to and the plants seem to have thicker stems. I've even grown microgreens on cotton balls and they came out fine.

The seedlings look fuzzy. I grew some micro greens, and I thought it was mold, so I threw them out.
Fyi: Lots of US grow containers still do contain bpa plastics. So, do be aware.

What is your most favorite microgreens to grow?
Good question, I like a mix called "spicy microgreen salad mix" from True Leaf, it is a blend of Broccoli, Kale, Mustard, Cabbage, Arugula so you get the best of everything! You can find it at amzn.to/3sYhbFD If I'm not growing the mix I like the broccoli most because of its purported health benefits, but it doesn't add the same kick as the radish or Mustard.
