Could it be that his decision has an impact on the beavers success in the game? I went to Wazzu and watched Dennis Erickson do the same thing on his way to Miami.
Words of wisdom from Mike. There's no good way for a coach to leave for another job. Would we all rather that he had walked out half way through the season? It's easy to get wound up about it, but I would expect Coach Smith (or any other coach) not to acknowledge it until it's time to make the announcement.
Not really. Oregon state was headed to the Bush league. Jonathan Smith made the first chess move, and it was a good one. The beavers won't be able to recruit at a high level anymore.
And i will still say that..I've burned 🔥 my Smith #9 jersey except for enough of it to frame and make into a sign....J S isn't part of Beaver Nation as far as I'm concerned...Go Beavers
Well he will be a Mac level head coach.... Smith knew he is good enough to win championships and he knows he cant do it at Oregon State now without the Pac 12.
Have fun with Smith! You should take a look at Smith's record without Trent Bray as the DC! You're going to love some of the "exciting calls" he makes too! How about a fake punt, on your own side of the field on 4th and medium, where your punter throws a fade down the sideline to a backup RS Frosh defensive back and it sails completely out of bounds. Oh wait, there's more; at the opponent's 22 yards line (3 seconds left), a fake FG where the kicker tries to run the ball in for a score from about 25 yards. That not doing it? How about on the road, you take the extra point off the board(made it) from an offsides call on the D, and line up from about 3 yards out for a 2 point conversion instead. You have the O get into Gun and snap the ball over the QB's head for the opponent to run the ball all the way back for a score?! These are only a few "fun" calls Smith has made. 2 of those were this season! Gonna be fun in that paradise you call East Lansing! Go Beavs!
I have an autographed Smith number 9 jersey from 2000. Trying to decide if I should burn it or wait and see. Feel betrayed by him and drank the Koolaid for sure. His image, reputation and legacy are tarnished for sure. Just wish he would have been honest with Beaver Nation!!😢 Going to be a VERY tough decision on who to root for next year when MSU comes back to Eugene. I NEVER root for the uckies, but just might for that game….
Smith really is a piece of work. Just balancing his public statements made in Oregon vs his semi-private communications and statements outside the state, it's pretty clear his whole persona is fake. He was out the door BEFORE the WSU game, and he's been lying to everyone one using OSU's resources to recruit for another program. I'm not sure what makes Smith special. To me he looks a lot like a state employee who misappropriated state resources for his personal benefit, and the state should pursue legal action to recomp what Smith stole from the taxpayers of Oregon.
Smith is overrated! He takes too many risks and has bad game management. Coach M (O Line Coach) and Coach Bray DC both were most responsible for most of Smith's success! As recruiters and with their scheme, technique changes! He will struggled at MSU and the boosters will be done after a few years! The next part here is Bray. He is a great DC! His dad was a great DC! Still a little hesitant in saying he (Trent Bray) is going to be a good HC. His body language and face in interviews seem like he's uncomfortable and kinda "taking one for the team" by taking over the job. He has already said, in an earlier interview (before any of this stuff happened) that he had no real interest n being a HC. I hope he works out obviously but it is a much different role, being a HC versus being a coordinator or position coach. My other concern is that Bray's "contact list" seems to be filled with just former Beavers. To the casual fan that seems great (and to be clear, I've been a Beaver fan for 4 decades now but I'm also looking at this from a football POV) but there's a difference in; bringing in safe hires versus bringing in the best hires. The one area Smith did well with, was hiring different quality assistants and eventually the right DC (in Bray). But hearing the our OC will be Ryan Gunderson (he was the QB coach at UCLA and obviously a former Beaver QB), please go see Dante Moore's (5* guy) stats from the season! That is not the whole story but again, we have a young, inexperienced-as an OC- guy being brought in. This is probably the key part to this staff in order to keep some of the key offensive players. This does not seem to move the needle much IMO and a mass exodus to the portal might be coming from the Beaver offensive players!? Hope not but hard to blame them. The other hire, ironically the most important hire as far as assistants go sounds like it's going to be former Beaver OL Kyle Devan! Great player but... he was the O Line Coach at Charlotte this season (3-9). I believe that was his first O-Line Coach (as the actual O Line coach). So again, major lack of experience. Both of these candidates' lack of experience will hurt in many ways; not retaining current talent on the roster, not being able to recruit quality talent, not enough experience in games and/or the season-calling plays. personnel decisions, discipline, game planning, etc.. Go Beavs!
I heard they seriously considered the guy at San Jose St, you had some serious candidates like Bronco Mendenhall and Troy Calhoun at Air Force (finished 2nd as coach of the year a few years ago) who is from Roseburg. I am sure Bray was always at the top of the list but some of that was the huge alumni pressure to hire him.
They are legally required to go through “the process” to make sure they give minorities a chance at the job. I think Barnes must have asked him to apply which must have been enough to keep him from getting on the plane. Bray was his man, but had to go through the process.
That's a concern. Check this out. In the last 25 years, 19 of those years have either been Mike Riley himself or a player that played for him as the HC. 6 of those years are the best coach the Beavs have ever had (Dennis Erickson) and the worst (Gary Andersen). That's not choosing the best candidate everytime. That is the "safest" hire.
First of all, Nicole Auerbach released info 90 minutes before the game he was considering the job. Smith said he thought would go--but he wanted to sleep on it. I don't feel it was a big change from what he said at either place. OSU is losing the conference, money, and a lower Group 5 schedule that won't help them get to a CFP. Bray appeared to lie as well, if he doesn't get a head job, he is the DC in East Lansing. That's why they made the other guy the interim HC.
Not to mention Trent bray will be gone as soon as next year. Maybe 2 years for more money and a real conference. To pretend bray will just stay is fairytale thinking
I am a Duck alum and I think your full of shite, many people want very bad to be at the schools they played at or near family, I have a friend coaching a D1 program and he has had offers to go to bigger programs but keeps turning them down to coach where he played. People that have no since of loyalty often perceive others that way as well which explains your opinion. He not only had the offer at Mich St but reportedly USC was willing to throw the bank at him to take their DC position but turned it down.
Duck fan here, really rough whats happening right now with college football. Gonna be rooting hard for you guys
The great Mike Parker nailed, “This is great news”!
Coach smith had his head in east Lansing when he called the fake field goal against Arizona!!
Thank you for your insight, heart and hope.
Let’s go Beavers
Great show! Go Beavs!
When the going gets tough, the weak get going.
Thank you everyone..great show..
Never actually seen the voice of Joe Beaver radio before, but I knew instantly when Mike started talking lol
In Bray we trust

Trent Bray: "...didn't want to get on that plane... ". Jonathan Smith's "Et tu, Brute" moment.
AJ is a cutie pie. I like this whole crew.
Ugh men.

Apparently this was just a stepping stone for Coach Smith. He must have read the press clippings.

If you burn it, put it on youtube. Those revenues could more than pay for the Johnny Turn Coat uniform.

Bitter much? He took OSU to heights not seen since Smith was the QB. Do not blame him for the disaster created by Pac-12 leadership.
@@deanfirnatine7814 That just tells me the type of person you are. No character, no principles. Figures you'd hold Smith in positive regard.
Smith had a 14 and 25 record until Bray took over the defense then went 20 and 10. I think Beavs got the better deal here.😢
@@orygunhunter Nailed it! Wait till the O Line coach Jim Michalczik leaves JS. He might not win a game!
Very nice to talk about beaver with AJ McCord.
Damien Martinez. Oh Boy. Not good.

I call BS on a national search and 7 candidates.
I think they hired a good coach, but lets be honest with your fan base.

He didnt want to get on the plane...yet...because he had a shot at head coach pay.
I wouldnt necessarily call that commitment.
I wouldn't call JS a legend. Zero Rose Bowl and or Fiesta bowls in what..6 trys.
8 wins this year with the normal weak nonconf schedule.
Gonna be hard to win when the outgoing coach makes more money than our entire staff combined.
