I start every sewing session with what I call mindless sewing…about thirty minutes worth. It’s just a grab and stitch project that accumulates to usable patchwork over time. AND it’s so relaxing that when I get to the more labor intensive type of sewing…my mind is set to go…though I have to admit…sometimes I never get there…I can do mindless anything all day long…lol. TY, Beth, for the time you take to motivate and teach others! 💕
That madam is insane! This is going to be my first quilt method. What a great way to make a quilt and practice without having to worry about mistakes! Thank you!
My eyes were fixed on your machine. It made me remember that as a young child, my mother had a similar machine and I was fascinated by it. That was a long time ago, at least 60 years. It was a flashback I never expected. She made pretty dresses and spring coats for Easter for me and my sister every year.
@@pattysherwood7091 there are oodles of fascinating webpages devoted to vintage sewing machines and a surprising number of vintage machines being bought and sold! My oldest son recently gifted me with an old Singer found in a barn! My journey has just begun!!
Thank you Beth for another wonderful stress-free tutorial. I love using up my scraps and you make it look so easy! Can’t wait to get started on this beautiful quilt.
Hey Beth, this one is my favorite lunchtime lullaby! Thanks for not making it speedy. Great, relaxing music, too. Some day, please consider doing a video of this quilt block method including more blocks and take it all the way to completion. I will continue watching this one. Thank you!
Thank you for the lovely video, for other people I tend to do the more strict blocks but for myself and family we love the scrappy quilt blocks. I thoroughly enjoyed watching this and it was extra special seeing it made on an old singer or Jones not sure which it is. They don’t have the ‘almost do everything for you’ as in newer ones but they are strong workhorses. My aunt and mother, who worked as machinists, both had the old treadle machines at home. I especially loved watching the smocking being worked on children’s dresses.😊👍
The log cabin Square still remains my favorite… I’ve always used Muslin as a foundation for my blocks… I’ve tried many types of blocks but still love strip piecing the best. I have discovered that aboriginal fabrics are my all-time favorites along with Kaffee Fassett..great video…
What do you use as a template plastic. I went on the order the pdf for the fans (a very ambitious one but I can dream) and the instructions included using such. Also, what about backing that isn't expensive.
On my project I'm working on now I found a brand new flat sheet at a resale store which I call cheap store that I will be using I paid 2.25 for it. Working out great.
Love this! I did this with an "i spy quilt" several years back. Only thing i added was a stay stitch of sorts all around square about 1/8" in before i trimmed. This way those pieces wouldnt move/pleat/fray when i finally got around to stitching whole quilt together.
Beth did you join them the regular way, or a different way as they are sewn onto a foundation? This will be an easy and fun project when I get Christmas gifts finished!
I love this! Thank you for sharing. My MIL taught me to quilt and when making quilts like this (and strippy quilts), she used newspaper cut to size for her foundation and a smaller stitch size when sewing the block. Then tore the newspaper off after the block was sewn. A little extra work, but then there were no extra layers to quilt through.
Using this method is so look much easier and fast. I have tried this method before I think I used a muslin as a foundation and it worked well. Thank you another great tutorial. Sandra B.
I never thought of using a foundation piece. That made it so much easier and you used that on how to trim. I learned some thing today that I will remember. thank you very much.
I made a crumb quilt a few months but love how you put your blocks together! I am going to use your method for my next one since I still have soooo many scraps left. Thank you for the inspiration! Look forward to your videos. Please keep them coming!!!
Kat Blevins. In response to your comment, I have to agree. I bought a Juki sewing machine. I paid over 300.00 dollars for it. In less than 6months, I had to have it repaired? Just because it's new and hi-tech means nothing. I think when things are rushed and mass produced. Something is lost in the quality of it. I learned my lesson, the hard way. 😖
I have one of these, or one very close. Mine is a Singer 221 and there are so many things it has over the new machines. For one, you can service it yourself. Cleaning and oiling takes a few hours at most and it is good to go. It is also not hard to find the parts since there are companies that specialize in these old machines.
@@Mantuamaker My first machine was a Singer Featherweight! I loved everything about it except the bobbin assembly which, for some reason, gave me trouble. I bet it was just my 14-year-old- kluztiness though. All metal gears, unlike the plasticky ones today. They are quite collectible now, and for good reason!
I like this method for scraps. Although I decided to make a quilt using non scrap materials and create a design with four material options. Thank you for the skilled idea.
What an awesome video!!! Thank you for this. I will be making scrappy blocks after the Holidays are over. I have a lot of old sheets from my mother that I can use for foundations. I Plan on making me a bag / purse and also a memory quilt. Thank you, again, for the video.

New subscriber, old quilter. Thanks for your peaceful and relaxing video. Just enough repetition for beginners to learn, and for me, I enjoy seeing how you choose to put your scraps together. The soothing music doesn’t hurt! I’ll be back.
I’m thinking I don’t need the base square. I have a 12 ½ x 12 ½ “ ruler. I could just sew the strips together and then cut around the ruler when I’m done. I could have it next to me at the machine to make sure I’ve got all the fabric I need on it. This method you’re showing makes more sense to me however than paper bases. Thanks for the cool idea !
