He did an awesome job. I looked into a wrap for my model 3 and didn't want to waste the time or money knowing that I'd make mistakes. And the shops prices were outrageous. I had my Audi s4 convertible wrapped for 3500 but they wanted 6000 for my Tesla. Just pure robbery. Decided to plast dip the entire car for about $500. Came out great.
Just starting to do my car. Door handles and mirrors so far. I’ve been watching CK wraps on the youtube and others on Rumble. Bought all the specialty tools and started the learning curve.
So awesome, great savings. I believe 2600 for my full wrap is the most I would pay. If I get a model x someday I will do it myself and save 6k. Thanks Kim
I love the color and look with the wrap. I am a dyi guy, but this is a major tedious job that I would hesitate to tackle myself. Kudos to Thinh for getting his car almost completed and it looks like a pro job to say the least.
@@lijie6431 Yep, You are certainly right. My wife brake light went out and they wanted $150 to replace the bulb. I went on UA-cam and had it fix in 10 minutes. Same with the side mirror again UA-cam to the rescue.
Is everything more expensive in America? 5k? If the vinyl costs 700 retail why is someone charging your 4300 to apply it, it only takes a day! You can get it done in the UK for £1500
PPF is less forgiving because if you mess up, it’s more noticeable. Any artifacts left behind on the surface before applying PPF will be visible to the naked eye, where as a colored vinyl wrap can hide them.
Awesome video, Kim. I've watched this channel for a long time, read Clean Technica and Elektrek daily, and am now ready to step into the world of Tesla. I recently purchased 5000 shares of TSLA and am hopeful that it gains enough after the 2nd Q earnings announcement to pay for a new Model S for me. Cheers!
Honestly, I have a hard time putting a screen protector on my phone.. lol.. well done! I would wonder how dust affects the wrap. I had the front of my S clear wrapped up to the front doors and windshiled and love it. I think that the ceramic coating is actually a great diy. as long as you get the car super clean first, it is pretty easy and works great.
I'm thinking about rapping my model 3. Were there any parts where it was difficult to squeegee out the bubbles? Did you ever have any situations where the vinyl would not stick because you had to remove it because of mistakes?
Big ups to him... and to do it without taking anything apart 😮.... this guy is amazing. Thanks Kim for introducing him to us. I think he may have just found a side job once he gets his completed. I can see people contacting him to help with theirs. :)
Wow that color wrap is so nice. He’s doing pretty good. U just got to be careful with the cutting knife but besides that it’s all good just takes time.
As an installer, I see multiple problems here. First, he over paid for the material by about $200. Second, the front and rear doors are different because certain shades of vinyl are considered "directional" and should be applied the same way on the whole vehicle. Third, one just doesn't watch some UA-cam videos and buy some material and then know how to wrap. I've been doing this for years and I'm still learning. Fourth, teslas are cake to wrap.
This is awesome...great video! I'm just finishing wrapping my Model 3 (have the front bumper left to do as of 7/14/20). Wrapping a car in this hot Atlanta weather is brutal.
Wow, it would save a lot of dough to be able to do this yourself, depends on how good you and whether you want it perfect or not. If I tried it I would practice on something else , like a mailbox or something around the house before I made a mess of my Tesla(or any car ) . I think because of the high price of professional labor for PPF and other wrap installers which most people can't afford it would be worth a try at least, not to give any insult or disrespect to those who do it for a living , they do know what they are doing . You were right Kim, his Model X did make for a great video! ( Really hate to see the black covered, it my favorite color for any Tesla lol !)
Let’s say I mess up and want to remove it. How simple is that, can there be damage to my original paint etc, and how messy of a cleanup? In case I want to scrap the project and take it back to normal.
My local wrap shop is doing my P100D 3M full wrap in satin black, a chrome delete and ceramic coating for $2,950 which as far as I'm concerned is an amazing deal since most wrap shops won't even do the wrap for less than $3,500. I wouldn't dare try to wrap it myself. One little mistake and you have to start from scratch. No thank you.
Oooh. I'm not much of a DIY person, which is weird since I coach a Lego robotics team. But this looks super interesting. I figure if I try it I'll only completely mess up about... hmm... 5 or 6 times at $700 a roll. Maybe not the best idea. haha
I'm not overly familiar with the sensor placement on Teslas, but I see small circles around the front of the vehicle that are flush with the body, I simply assumed that those are some of them. Would wrapping your vehicle require you to keep those areas exposed and if so, I'm curious how much they would stand out on a completed wrap? Love the videos BTW.
Wrapper here. The roll of vinyl is directional meaning you have to install the pieces the same direction. Front door is probably horizontal and rear door is vertical.
I thought about similar. I bought a 3M sample book and watched youtube videos on how to do it, it's quite doable. Shop prices are a bit outrageous but diy, you could try a wild color. I actually think mirror chrome is pretty striking although not a subtle look :)
You save so much money doing it yourself...I'm going to wrap mine in ppf. Just the front bumper, hood and mirrors though, not the entire car. Wish me luck.
I chrome deleted my model s and I'm happy with it. I got a rediculas quote. And probably saved over $1,800 doing it myself .I did around windows, directionals, door handles, and chrome strip on back.im happy with it ,and I wasnt worried about how many pieces were used. Great video Kim. And yes he has skills .but that front will be very difficult to do...
A lot of people wants to wrap their Tesla because Tesla doesn't offer too many colors. Pay $2500 for a color option for MX and you have very limited choice. For that price they should offer another 10 colors. Maybe I am wrong, maybe not!!
Hi Elon, it’s nice to know you watch Kim’s channel 😁 Yeah was thinking to order a black M3 and wrap it up in whatever finish I choose. Now I’ll go the free plain white and maybe apply quicksilver chrome? 🤤
In our countries (Australia/New Zealand) you don't need to re-register the car, you just notify the Vehicle Licensing Authority (think in the US its called the DLVA?) of the change of colour so they can update it in the system.
I’d like to know more about the methods he used to cut out details in the pieces he’s wrapping like the piece mentioned on the outside over the front tire and the center console around the silver piece that sticks out for you to push it open with.
A vinyl wrap does not fix or cover body damage and will make it harder to cover. It's important to fix the body damage before applying the wrap or else you will end up having bubbling. Rust can actually cause corrosion over time and cause the wrap to get loose and bubble up and rip. Fix the damage before wrapping.
Ricky Alvarado I have an M5 and I can tell you it’s wayyyyyy harder than a Tesla. I had mine professionally done and the techniques they used were pretty trick.
That wrap looks directional to me, the driver side doors reflect light differently so they look like different colors. If I had to guess he changed the orientation because he spread the work out so far that he was doing 1 piece at a time and probably just forgot.
Wow, that guy did a great job...Mad skills!! But are the front and rear doors the exact same color? It appears the vinyl may have come from 2 different “dye” lots...
