Greetings from the mid-afternoon, everyone! In this video I wanted to talk about why I think Minecraft and Terraria aren't really all that similar overall. I hope you enjoy, and cya soon! :3

very fair
@@TheMythOfPeace ...welp, this is how I'm gonna describe them from now on! If I don't forget, anyway.
Seriously though, very well-put!
@@JadeStoneDagger47 don't forget to add sandbox in each one
@@TheMythOfPeace oh, good point
just got a sub from me fr@@JadeStoneDagger47
Yeah the difference is that Terraria is a good game and Minecraft is like a fun building sim with a crappy survival experience tacked on
@@brendantw I can totally see where you're coming from with this. Personally, I don't mind the survival mode in Minecraft, but I do agree that the building is generally more fun than the surviving
the background gameplay is killing me
@@borizon1 I swear I'm not bad at video games
they both have blocks
@@pucciraskolnikov7266 Touché
hey just a production suggestion: the background music is a bit too loud that it becomes distracting, especially starting around 1:50 ish.
Yeah, the Minecraft music was hard to balance properly. Thank you though, I'll keep that in mind more in the future!
To be fair most of the comparisons came when Terraria first launched, at this point we had the eye, worm and Skeletron as bosses. Their wasn’t a lot of depth to Terraria that got added later so most of what people focused on was multiplayer building, at the time Minecraft had no Ender dragon so it was also very multiplayer build focused in terms of content creators
@@ara4352 I can see why that'd be where the comparison comes from! Also, yeah, it isn't as common anymore, but...eh, I just felt like talking about it
Minecraft is so peaceful.. Meanwhile I feel like a masochist when playing Terraria.
@@pothakinkin4361 100%. I think the music of both can reflect that, where Minecraft has really peaceful music generally while Terraria's is really intense
One thing i wish you made a point out of is that Re-logic actually likes their community where as Mojang/Microsoft seems to hate the minecraft community and if you want proof of this just look at how people feel when i mincraft update get's delayed or takes a while to come out. compaired to Terraria where every delay means they add more content.
@@CakeCreepZ Huh. I never thought about that...wow. Yeah, fair enough
honestly, the only similarities that people look at when saying "terraria is 2d minecraft" is the mining and building.... and that's baout it, everything else is waaaaayy different
and maybe because chopping down a tree is the first thing you do in both games, so people that never played terraria just assume everything else is the same
@@JangoLibre Yeah, I've also heard stuff about the art style tho
And I agree, the tree thing definitely sounds like it'd play a part in that
@@JadeStoneDagger47 totally, yeah, both being square/block games definitely helped a lot to this.
I finished watching the video now, I didn't see the part where you talked about the art style so I totally forgot about this, which is probably one of the main reasons lol
very good video btw, keep it up! :D
@@JangoLibre Thank you! :D
I don't see how it can be argued that they aren't similar, the fact of differences between them doesn't erase their similarities. I understand that you mean to broaden the view of those who think that these are "the same game" which I agree is demonstrably untrue.
But the core gameplay loop, art style, and focus on building and molding the world to fit your needs does give much to the argument against them being similarities. That is like saying you and I aren't similar at all because you made a video discussing terraria, and I only made a comment.
@@abucket14 I guess a big part of it is that I just think of different things when I imagine the two.
When I think about Minecraft, I think of expressing my creativity through building and redstone. But when I think about Terraria, I think of fighting bosses and definitely not dying over and over to them.
Because of that, I personally don't see them as being that similar overall, despite some of their significant similarities. I will admit that this has a decent amount with how I personally play the games, but I still think it can be applied a bit more broadly in a lot of ways.
I do agree that they have a lot of similarities though, and I can totally see why you think they are similar!
Edit: also I think part of it is that I'm using "similar" here in a bit of a stronger way than most people would, which is partially to emphasize my point and partially to increase attention-grabbiness
@JadeStoneDagger47 I understand and respect your reasoning, but the differences we highlight between the two are deeper than their surface similarities. If I'm going to introduce Terraria, I'm going to compare it to games that are based in the greater gaming culture.
Personally, the way I introduce Terraria is "Imagine if Minecraft was a 2-D Metroidvania style game with heavy emphasis on an open progression, Item Based combat system."
I use minecraft to get across the freedom and creativity of the building aspects of Terraria, taking what strong similarities are there and allowing the rest of my introduction to show just how different from minecraft it is.
Overall I absolutely agree that the vastness of their differences let both stand alone, but I also think we should acknowledge, as the games themselves do, that both are inspiring and unique gems of indie game development. Close enough that they are brothers but wildly different, unlike the twins some people see them as.
Also, as I didn't state so earlier, i really enjoyed your video and like a lot of the points you brought up :)
@@abucket14 That's a really good way to introduce Terraria to someone! Also, I totally get where you're coming from and love the idea of comparing them as siblings.
And thank you! :)
@@JadeStoneDagger47 i hope to catch another video of yours sometime, i haven't been this engaged in actual discussion in quite a while.
Kinda irrelevant to the video, but your voice is really relaxing for commentary type videos
I have to disagree though on one point related to Terraria, fishing is the most important part of the game /j

never played terraria but! i always play minecraft with a bunch of mods, i wonder about the modability of terraria and how like? prevalent it is in the community? fun video though maybe i should check out terraria :3
@@literallyjustakitty I would personally highly recommend at least looking into Terraria, it's really great!
For modding on Terraria, there's a dlc called tModLoader which works like a separate app with an in-game workshop. It's really straightforward to use and works well!
