watching Cleo feels like technology journalism presented by an engineer with the communication capability of a journalist rather than a journalist an interest in technology and engineering. The focus is on the detail and the concrete goal for how the technology improves people's lives and the detail in the plan for getting there. Typical technology journalism seems focused on spectacle rather than detail either in service of how the technology is a disaster or that it will be revolutionary with no concrete information on how.

The best thing about Cleo's videos is that she never treats the viewer like a moron (like mass media channels do). Like if you watch a space travel news story on mass media they have to make some awkward cringe joke because the journos are morons who think being smart is weird and childish. Cleo's videos treat the audience as intelligent adults, although they can appeal to kids, she has infographics to help explain complex subjects and makes them relatable. Her presentation style is also friendly and welcoming. Her space suit video was terrific. If I had to make one any advice it would be to slow down a little bit, she tends to get excited about the subject and talks very fast at times.

Cleo's adventurous inquisitive nature combined with her animated way of describing what she is delving into is what keeps me viewing. I think most of the media I see only seems to be able to present optimism when couched in hyperbole and wild conjecture and so it seems unrealistic, whilst anything presented with realism seems to only be pessimistic. I'm always down to watch Cleo because I know i'll get to see the optimism that you can still find when taking a look at the reality of a story and understanding the limitations of a technology; that optimism seems so much more tangible and satisfying, the impact and the path to get there so much clearer.

Becoming full time UA-camr can be really tough if you don't plan everything ahead. I knew I couldn't afford to waste months trying to get noticed by just a handful of people. Instead of spending months to get few hundred subscribers, I found how to get organic growth immediately (by using a bit of Famester of course). Since I started using this tool, my channel blew up and I realized that people tend to focus on numbers when searching for content. Having a low subscriber count often means being overlooked, even if your content is top-notch...

Cleo - you do a great job addressing new or next-generation technology. As a scientist, doing new technology and making math and science exciting for young people is important. But, I thought you would be interested in a couple of next-generation technology. 1) Optical Correlators work by Intellisense Systems Inc. and 2) Photonic IC technology work by Accipiter Systems Inc. & the University of PITT (Pittsburgh PA) or Bascom Hunter Technology & Princeton University (Baton Rouge LA).

I love @cleoabrams point at 31:21. As a commercial producer, I regularly try and coach my clients on feedback and ask them to communicate the problem they're feeling (I don't feel like the graphic is clear) rather than proposing the solutions themselves (make it bigger). That way the experts in creative communication (the art director, editor, copywriter, etc) can find the solution that fits the creative (add a subtle drop shadow to the text, try a light overall vignette to the picture, increase the graphic 5% rather than 20%, have it animate on rather than fade up, etc).

The best walkthroughs of process I've seen. My takeaways:
17:30 One of the things I care a lot about is that I’m not the main character of my show. I am the proxy for the audience and I introduce them to a new main character in every episode.
19:48 The visual needs to actually help the explanation. Is it answering the question? Is it doing explanatory work? If you’re saying ‘this’ it’s a cue for a key visual.
28:25 Never underestimated your audience’s intelligence and never overestimate their prior knowledge. No jargon. No acronyms. Very simple language but very complex ideas.
Keep head and hands as close together as possible. The person who came up with the idea should be involved in the work.
