It's scary to consider - she was Cosette. The highest-sung part in all of Les Miserables, and then she goes and pulls a low G-flat with better resonance and placement than I've heard from many mezzos. Go Judy Kuhn!
Amen! She may have the most perfect Broadway voice ever...pity I'm so stuck on it, seeing as I visualised the female lead in the play/hopefully musical I'm working on as a Judy Kuhn type (with more overall emphasis on the soprano than mezzo area of the voice, but still with quite a few dramatic low notes during the more Sturm-und-Drang-filled parts). Talk about aiming way too high *yikes face*.
You have a good point and this rendition is beautiful. But actually Cosette is not a hard role cause is a character that always sings in falsetto. Of course it will sound better in a natural soprano, but any woman with a good head voice training can play Cosette.
David Matos Cosette goes up to soprano high C. A natural mezzo-soprano will be hard pressed to sing that unless you’re Cecilia Bartoli or Joyce DiDonato.
Can we please talk about Judy Kuhn's range??? I mean, she played COSETTE in Les Mis, yet here she is singing this Mezzo song, with no audible struggle on the low notes. Now, THAT'S what I call talent!
Ok, let me break all your deams, lol. She is awesome but she is a mezzosoprano, Cosette is actually an easy role that any woman can reach her notes with falsetto, even me being a boy I can hit most of Cosette notes. She has a wonderful voice and she can do whatever she wants. But definetely she is mezzosprano cause she can sing the ower notes without breaking her voice
Judy actually sang Fatine in the 2006 Broadway revival. www.playbill.com/article/i-am-my-own-mom-judy-kuhn-once-a-cosette-will-play-fantine-in-les-miz-com-143771
@@alematosmusic7498 There's a difference, however, between hitting the high notes and singing them with perfect placement and dynamics. The score calls for piano high B-flats and Cs - not an easy feat even for a high mezzo, and Judy delivered every time. She's like Julie Andrews - started singing regular soprano roles, then went down to the mezzo belter range as her voice aged. It's the musical theatre equivalent of the soprano assoluta voice in opera - capable of anything.
***** when you know the actual story of Pocahontas, hearing "Pocahontas" sing this song actually makes it just as heartbreaking (if not more so) than when Fantine sings it.
I grew up with her voice, at least because of Pocahontas which I would watch over and over again, and even now at 15 I have downloaded the songs and listen to them on repeat. Her voice is beautiful. So is she, and (despite the historical inaccuracies) I think Pocahontas was a great movie.
Judy Kuhn has been a Broadway star for over twenty years, and her talent speaks for itself. It needs no defense. Her interpretation is lovely, and valid in its own right. Kudos to you for posting such a rare treat.
This woman is insanely talented, like an open channel for crystal clarity coming forth from her and able to meet each note from a seemingly endless range head on with no hesitation or wavering.
I saw her in both roles (she was my first Cosette and then years later caught her as Fantine). She was AMAZING in both roles. Her voice is so effortless-she makes it look easy (it's not-I'm a trained singer and she's got an especially large range). I'm also continuously impressed with her acting (she is an incredibly gifted actress, IMO-I've seen her Fosca, which was a brave and nuanced performance). She'll be back on Broadway in 2015-I urge all to see her. (She's incredible-as is the cast-of Fun Home!)
Judy Kuhn has a glorious voice! I like her rendition of this song "I Dreamed A Dream." She is the quintessential Broadway star. Lovely and with An amazing voice!
It's kinda funny to know that she is the voice of Pocahontas!! :) then the other person who sang this song, Lea Salonga, is the singing voice of Mulan! DISNEY PRINCESSES ARE SO AWESOME!!! ♥ ♥ ♥
I think she sings it the best. there are so much strong emotions in her voice, but she doesn't scream, she doesn't move too much, she's not trying to sing it "too good" like everyone else does. She just sings it simply. You can feel the hidden pain inside her, but she doesn't show it so much, so her emotions are subdued and that's what makes it so brilliant - It's so emotional, but you can feel it only in her voice and see it in her eyes, so the general performance is so peaceful.
I had the awesome opportunity to take a master class with her at my university. The way she accessed the emotions of different songs was insane. She's an amazing actress and person :D
Wow, Judy is spectacular! I've always loved her voice. I particularly love in this performance the emotion Judy shows as she sings it, like it's coming from the very bottom of her heart. That is what I call talent. =)
What a flawless performance from a brilliant singer. Look at her neck - not a single drop of tension throughout the entire song. All action below the neck, in the intercostal muscles/diaphragm. Today's MT singers could learn a lot from her.
Wonderful rendition of this very special song from Les Miserable. I still recall seeing this musical in 1986 in New York. A powerful musical. Nice to see the smiling faces of Ronald and Nancy Reagan.
seen this performance countless of times, and I'm always in awe. Everysingle damn note solid as gold. She's really one of the best singers ever. Her perfect vibrato, cristal clear voice, and beautiful tone and that range, she's just incredible, love her
This is a great singer performing against the odds....and she survives it very well. For a singer this is a nightmare situation, but back then you simply had to perform, which she did very well regardless of the pianist!
I've never wanted to slap a pianist so bad. She even said she had wanted to sing this for the longest time, and tonight was HER night. why tf didn't that pianist slow down?? He rushed her through the entire song. But like a true professional, she Sang it Fuckin beautifully
***** I always thought that they had to hurry for camera time.... like if this was televises they had to fasten the tempo. Nonetheless, she did wonderful.
The arrangement was was too busy! That's why it was so rushed. Not good. This should have been about the song, NOT a piano concerto! Judy, however, did a wonderful job in spite of it. If that was Marvin Hamlisch playing- "he done her wrong" with that arrangement!
"I look at this and think ugh, my hair. They had sent a hair person to my hotel and I wasn’t really paying attention at first, then I looked in the mirror and he had teased it straight up and was shaping it into a horrifying bouffant! She has the voice of an angel. Truly one of the greatest Broadway voices of all time. She also exhibits a great deal of depth in her performance. Beautiful and extraordinary.
Lora Phill Tangcalagan I don't know...I mean Lea is really good and I've watched her played Fantine, but to me, she's No.2. I always get the chill every time I listen to Ruthie.
I swear I’m tired of those people saying lío Salonge is better!!! 🙄 if you think she is better go see her videos I don’t know what your here for if you’re just going to criticize the QUEEN!!!!
I can appreciate that any critics find this to be a boring rendition; however, I implore that everyone takes into account the tremendous skill she exhibits in regards to her control. Not to mention, being trained as a soprano, her low alto notes are unbelievable. This is a magnificent rendition.
Amazing. I listen to this performance almost every night. Not only is it the best rendition of this song I have ever heard, but Ms. Kuhn is so beautiful it adds to the enjoyment of the performance.
I moved to New Jersey when Le Miz came to New York in 1986. I learned from my realtor saying that Colm Wilkinson came to find a home for him to star in that musical. I loved the show so much then. And I love this special show by Juy at Whitehouse. Now USS Ronald Reagan is heading home to San Diego after finishing its mission to save Japan. I have written my thanks to all Americans in my column in Japanese. Thank you Mr. President again. Eijiro Odagiri
Timing is off and not a great performance but pretty nice. It's probably hard to play at the WH with all the security and the prez staring at you. The acoustic were pretty crummy too so can't hold it against them really.
Wow, do I ever disagree. Judy Kuhn defined this role, way back when. Everyone else has been trying to do it as well ever since. Considering the venue, the crowd , and the thin and rushed accompaniment, I think she killed it!
I would love to hear her sing Colours Of The Wind live

She is so brilliant. I wonder what Judy Kuhn is doing today. I thought she´d make a world career when i heard her the first time in the late 80´s. Bless her. André
I can't help it... I know this was before Pocahontas, but this song, and this voice, makes it pretty much impossible to not picture that movie. While I love Judy individually, and I adore Les Mis., this song could easily be Pocahontas singing about John Smith as he's leaving to go back to England.

I keep hearing Pocahontas. Such a rich, beautiful voice! xD

ASmilingMalice Oh yes. Her real-life story is indeed tragic, and this song is very fitting to it.
@@ASmilingMalice I would kill to see an animatic of Pocahontas singing this song.
@thatonechick Let's be honest, that's the Pocahontas II we should have gotten.
Her voice brings a raw, unclouded simplicity to the song that's beautiful beyond words.
I grew up with her voice, at least because of Pocahontas which I would watch over and over again, and even now at 15 I have downloaded the songs and listen to them on repeat. Her voice is beautiful. So is she, and (despite the historical inaccuracies) I think Pocahontas was a great movie.
Her voice in Color of the Wind is just mind blowing.
i dont agree. her voice is great if her voice resonates.

If we can excuse Marvin Hamlische's Yiddish pronunciation of "Les Miser-obble" we may proceed to enjoy Ms. Kuhn.
LMAO Leigh miserobble*
Lmao
vocally my favourite version! Easy vibration in the voice, clear words, beautiful belt mix! Gorgious!
It's kinda funny to know that she is the voice of Pocahontas!! :) then the other person who sang this song, Lea Salonga, is the singing voice of Mulan!
DISNEY PRINCESSES ARE SO AWESOME!!! ♥ ♥ ♥
yeah..they are awesome...but Lea Salonga is the best....
lea is also princess jasmine
She isn't the voice of Pocahontas...she's the singing voice.
Nope go look it up on IMBd...Judy is singing voice!
ziyidas Plus Judy did the singing voice for Princess Ting-Ting in Mulan 2!

She sings so effortlessly with a beautiful tone and incredible range. Truly one of THE best female singers ever.
Did the pianist have a plane to catch in a hurry? He kept rushing.
HE HAD LOSE BOWEL MOVEMENT... He had a dream of going to the bathroom that moment, and its killing him.

That piano makes it sound like "I Dreamed a Ragtime Dream," as performed by Fantine, the broken down saloon girl.
K Carter you’re not wrong. You’d think the White House could have found a less ridiculous piano.
😂😂
Omg im crying. Too funny
the pianist seemed to be on a hurry... emotion is lost with fast tempo...
Yeah pianist seemed to be a mood
agree
OOOOOHH this song is sooooooo beautiful! Chills are coming down my spine!
Judy Kuhn was famously known for Pochahontas' singing voice.
Incredible. What a marvelous voice - range, control, diction, emotion, interpretation. An enormous treat for those who love vocal artistry.

lovely version
She's so awkward and cute at the same time, and of course her voice is amazing :)
One of the best voices in the world. Same as with Liz Callaway.
The voice of an angel....I have chill bumbs....
she is one of the best singers that i´ve ever heard!!!! i love your voice judy (BRAZIL)
Wow, why does the band suck? They're way to fast and are not capturing the emotion behind the song.
But that voice......... sigh~
And no one tells them
I guess this is why people sing a cappella. Never sing with a deaf pianist.
notta lackey That "deaf pianist" wrote A Chorus Line.
The guy's timing is off, no matter what he writes.
i think this performance is incredible. she hits every note perfectly, nothing strained, and she builds up the intensity beautifully.
man, i love her. never saw this......... colors of the wind will be one of the most beautiful song on this planet.. her voice is amazing,
brilliant
Anyone else picture Pocahontas singing this? Lol!
yessssss
ya

The best version i have heard of this song!!! Her voice is soft even if she is singing the strong notes....:) I just love her as Pocahontas too;)
music means so much to me, and i can't carry a tune in a bucket!! just listening to this makes me happy.
i love that i can here pocahontas singing les mis

I can't think of anyone else singing this crazy huge song better than Ruthie Henshall, not even Susan Boyle!

i absolutely love her voice:) it sounds so natural, and her range is incredible
One thing i have to say:
WOW.
Judy Kuhn sang this WOUNDERFULY. Full of soul.
I swear I’m tired of those people saying lío Salonge is better!!! 🙄 if you think she is better go see her videos I don’t know what your here for if you’re just going to criticize the QUEEN!!!!
The pianist you speak of is Marvin Hamlish, famed pianist and composer.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvin_Hamlisch
Richard Kasmer He didn't get any more famous from this number.
notta lackey I totally agree notta lol
MC Schmitt but in all fairness he is a very good pianist...I don't know what happened here.
Wow...Pocahontas indeed. Beautiful- her voice is the strongest I have heard singing this song. Amazing.

I'm cringing at the announcer's pronunciation of "Les Miserables" Xo
NH.-B That "announcer" is Marvin Hamlisch. LOL Surprised he didn't pronounce it correctly.
I can actually imagine Pocahontas singing this song when those colonists invaded their lands.
Definitely the best version I've heard! Full of emotions but they come out natural, not forced out. Bravo!
Wow! What a beautiful voice.
Judy's voice is beautifully clear, I think it matches well. Ruthie was too soft or strangely projected...
Voice of Pocahontas
her voice is absolutely gorgeous, i am not a massive fan of female voices but this is beyond exceptional

The timing being wrong isn't her fault. The piano player is totally off. She's making the best of a bad situation.
Beautiful Judy, you're voice is a dream. J
she's amazing D:
i like Lea Salonga's version far better than this....
All right, but not as sensitively done as Lea Salonga.
100% right Stephanie...
