How to beat a P0420 Code for $6 (Using 48 State cats on a California Emissions Car)

  • Today we will show you how to work around two different emissions related issues with one awesome trick!
    Issue 1: You vehicle is throwing a P0420 Code (Which indicates that the catalytic converter is not functioning efficiently). In most regions having this code will prevent you from passing vehicle inspection. Don;t worry, this super inexpensive trick can help!
    Issue 2: Either you live in California (or New York) or somehow got your hands on a so called "California Car". These vehicles come equipped with a different, more strict, emissions system. The parts to service these California emissions cars can be up to 10 times more expensive than the regular parts... But do not fear! We are going to show you how to use regular emissions components on a California Emissions car and keep the check engine light off!
    What is the secret to solving both issues? Spark plug foulers!

    You can split your exhaust into dual exhaust or a Y-pipe before it exits to the rear of the car, with a small restrictor plate hole inside to the rear outlet and they only stick the tester into your rear tailpipe and so most exhaust blows out off the pipe under the car, this yields a 50% to 75% reduction in measured emissions

    Most northeast states, including New York and New Jersey, have laws that require their states sell “the most emission efficient variant of a vehicle available.” So if an auto manufacturer makes a “California spec” car, those northeast states are required to sell them. It’s been like that since early 2000s. Almost all northeast cars are California spec’d. PS- even that garbage can was rolling over when you floored that cold-start Subaru!

    California , and all of the CARB compliant board States train their inspection
    mechanics to fail a vehicle they see this mod on.
    I'm not saying someone might get lucky ,
    Not saying I agree with emission rules ,
    but the chances of someone being passed while doing this is slim
    if you live outside the rust belt states or western usa.
    Much different rules here in the carb compliant northeast .
    In the northeast , you fail for even the cel being on even for non
    emissions reasons.
    They don't play .

    I have a 2012 Honda Civic and I tried to put a non foul around it just to see if the light would stay off but it still came back on that tell me? Does that mean it's something else tripping the p420 code and not catalytic converter? I also changed both oxygen sensors air intake hose PCV valve cabin and engine air filters and I'm still getting the code

    California emission laws suck nobody knows that better than someone that lives in California you probably got a California emissions car because somebody from California move to New Jersey and traded their car in just remember Eric it's not California legal for emissions unless it has a California stamp on the catalytic converter no matter what the rest of the system looks like that's why when you go to buy the catalytic converter you can't just put any catalytic converter on the car in California. Unfortunately your modifications would never pass in California because before they smog test the car for emissions they inspected for modification

    • @MrPiimpslap

      You only need to replace them if they dont work. If the car is a California Emissions car, it needs to have CARB compliant Cats on it. If Federal emissions, it doesnt matter which EFN code you use.

    What's a spark plug fowler?

  • @Hrishka18
    @Hrishka18 2 роки тому

    I have a e90 328xi and my sensors fit inside perfectly. So I had a 420 and 430 code also so I took regular spacers and drilled the 1/2 hole through the fouler and installed it on both banks on the downflow. I reset my computer and did a drive cycle but the same codes came back so I added double spacers but this time one wasn’t drilled at all and the other one was but now it’s throwing codes for “no activity detected” on both banks 1&2 sensors 2. I’m not sure if I should put a single spacer (without drilling anything) or keeping both spacers but drilling a little bit though the spacer that isn’t drilled at all. I also have both of my CATs but for some reason it’s throwing codes.

    • @Hrishka18
      @Hrishka18 2 роки тому

      And if you’re wondering if the drilled spacer is on the exhaust or if it’s on the sensor I have it in this order
      Sensor-fouler-drilled fouler-exhaust pipe

    • @Hrishka18
      @Hrishka18 2 роки тому

      Also the codes that said “no activity detected” actually went away for a good 50 miles AFTER drive cycle was complete. But only bank 2 came back I’m also expecting bank 1 to come back. So I’m thinking it worked a little but not enough. I guess I should probably drill each spacer a little bit then try again. In that time I completed my drive cycle and until the “no activity” light came back on I could’ve gone to inspection and passed emissions. So it definitely worked for a little then it stopped detecting anything

      Use a scan tool with live-data graphing, it will show which cat is dead. But 420 refers to the downstream sensor, so whatever cat is before that sensor is your culprit.

    • @ardeefourby4524
      @ardeefourby4524 3 роки тому

      The last O2 sensor in the system behind the last Cat. The last O2 is the cat monitoring O2 . The computer compares the front HO2S's or A/F Sensors against the last sensor and monitors the rear O2 sensor activity. A good working catalyst will cause the monitoring O2 sensor to have no or very little activity after the cats light off. The computer is programmed to watch for the monitoring O2 sensor to be inactive within a specified amount of time. If the O2 is still active after that amount of time, the computer sets a P0420, meaning the catalyst has lost some of it's ability to do its job. Some vehicle manufacturers can reprogram the computer with an update to increase the amount of time it takes to set P0420. It's easier, less time consuming, and better for the car if you can check with your dealer to see if there is a computer update for cars setting a P0420.

    Or remove cat(s), install straight pipe where cats were, problem permanently solved....those cats really don't do what the EPA claims they're supposed to do, all they do is restrict airflow through your engine causing power loss, oh and expensive repair bills when they fail. A properly tuned engine will put off less emissions than a cat equipped vehicle will. My non-CA emissions vehicles have passed SMOG in CA several times, they give me weird looks but all I tell them is CA emissions isn't very good because my old 71 Ford doesn't have cats or any emissions shit at all, and its passing emissions....so...point proven, all the emissions shit doesn't do anything except not allow your engine to breath properly causing the emissions problems in the first place.
