This is radio at its best: using imagination to draw people in by talking directly to them and yet drawing them into a larger community and in this case crossing lines of race class etc, a serious public service & then kickin out the jams!
"Dude!!! I'm freakin' out here!!!! I can't believe I found this. Mojo was THE BEST Detroit radio manufactured on the 20th century air waves & that's sayin' a lot. I remember one of Mojo's standard quips was...'Are you feelin' zz'd, bx'd or even riffed-off??'. Thanks for this."
MOJO!!!! Is THE baddest DJ on this planet EVER!!!!! He kept us rocking in the 80s with hit, after hit, after hit!!! He kept us ON OUR FEET!!!! Ain't NOBODY BAD LIKE YOU!!!!!
Actually, he went from WGPR-107.5(1977-1982) to WJLB-97.9. Maybe he went to WLBS for a while before he went to WHYT? I used to listen to Mojo ALL the time, starting around 1980. His show was without a doubt the best thing on radio. Mojo was the man...
Mojo is the MAN!!! My variety in my taste of music, I owe to Mojo. The Art Of Noise, Prince (extended uncut versions), Frankie goes to Hollywood, Devo, Krafwerk and so many more. My good friend Ty just met Mojo and he blessed him with a video where Mojo does the old intro he used to do on radio. Very DOPE!!! One Love for Mojo, radio will never be the same.
Thank you McMorris55 for posting this classic piece of MFA history! I loved listening to MoJo back in the day. He was (is) one of a kind! SparkyBlueFox bows to you and to "MoJo" !
I'm a Detroit girl living in the South now, but boy was it good to hear MFA, and the electrifying Mojo. I used to say Mojo is a Prince groupie because he played Prince so much. I used to wonder "Mojo, what the hell did Prince do to you, and how did you get that Rasberry Beret album to play it before it was officially out". Hell by the time it was released, we knew every song by heart. Miss you Mojo, miss Detroit too, hope they get things worked out. Thanks for the Post.
EMU alumni here....listened to Mojo all thru the late 70's what a musical education he gave me.....my BS from Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti was SECONDARY !!!!!!
Loved listening to The Man Mojo. Sitting around today thinking about times back in the day in Toledo. Somehow The Electrifying Mojo came out of nowhere and took me back
Ohhhh...I so remember listening to this as a kid. Loved the Electrifying Mojo and I was a middle class white kid. My favorite saying of his was "If you are at the end of your rope, tie a knot and hold on". Lots of fantastic funk-and my initiation to George Clintons "The Atomic Dog" single!
I can tell you from my travels North America-wide.. no city had the dj-schtick and cpative audience that names like Detroit. the electrifying Mojo, Dick Purtan, Arthur Penhallow among the Motor City legends. consider yourself forutnate if you were part of these careers and others there in Detroit. Im telling you....the best back in the day (late 70's, early to mid 80's) THE BEST jctoronto
The Electrifying mojo was the cutting edge of music happening in the D.....I use to tape his midnight funk association to make my play list back in the day.....there was no betterrrr.....great times👍👈
love this guy. he introduced so many of us suburban kids to such a wide variety of music that we probably never would have listened to otherwise. and for that I thank him....
So cool, I used to listen on an old clock radio. I was like 12 and was supposed to be sleeping. I'd sneak a listen, and as the show went on I'd turn it louder and louder until BAM, busted and I'd get yelled at and the radio taken away.
This is GREAT! Bringing Back all the old memories! Henry Ford Class of 1981. The good old days. THe best music and times period! MOJO, remember all of the great mixes....hold on tight, don't let go....
I began listening to the legendary Electrifying Mojo while a student at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor where Mojo also attended. Mojo started doing his broadcasts on the U of M radio station. He then moved his show to a radio station in Ann Arbor and later to stations in Detroit.
I remember that mix, that was one of the best mixes out there, when i used to explain it to people no one could understand unless they listened to it, to this day, i think that is one of the best mixes
Yeah Job are scarce there, moving to a bigger city was a good choice. Mojo was broadcast from Packard rd. in the mid 70's The Mid Nite funk Association started there.
OH man!! This takes me back!. Mojo was a visionary. If there is a Radio Hall of Fame in the Motor City, Mojo better in there. This cat made Motor City radio back in the day.
Everybody and they're Mama ran in the crib to tape MoJo! I remember having the LL Cool J radio outside and dancing under the streetlights some of his mixes! Good time! Cooley Class Of A-D-6! (86')
This is another example of what made Detroit different than any other city in America. It's the only place where black people had the opportunity to live a middle class life style, on such a large scale. Everyone had high expectations. It was the norm that families owned their own homes, 2 cars and had kids in college. We had high music I.Q.. There was a prevailing positive attitude. Remember Mayor Young in the Mothership with MoJo? "Ohh It's All So Beautiful"! Mackenzie 75 yeah boyyeeee!
Thank You,you now have a new friend for posting this.Nothing but memories ,thank you!!!If you are not from the D you could not possibly understand!!!!!
Mojo update....I want to thank all of you for the comments of support, I'd like to inform you all that in the near future there will be more Mojo clips coming your way. I have located a Mojo fan in Kansas, he informs me that over the years during his visits to Detroit he took the time to record several Mojo broadcast. He has offered to share these broadcast. They are enroute. The Funk is due to arrive this week. I will post them A.S.A.P. Stay Tuned, and May The Funk Be With You Always!
We used to recite the MFA pledge with Mojo every midnight. Mojo only allowed himself to be photographed in silhouette. Also he was one of the few people to interview Prince (back in about 1983 -1984).
I lived in Saginaw,Mi and was able to listen to MOJO from time up there. I would be straight amazed. I was like an hour and a half from Detroit. This made my teen years memorable.
I miss Mojo so dog on much!!! He's like a favorite Uncle that moved away. The best parts of my youth were spent with Mojo. I remember cruising Jefferson in gridlocked traffic after we'd been put off Belle Isle one hot summer night and Mojo heard that Jefferson was packed, he got on the airways and said party right there. The next thing I knew people were pulling over and getting out of their cars and we turned Jefferson into The Strip with everybody blasting Mojo! Did I mention, I miss Mojo?
Oh my GOD!! I so miss The electrifying MOJO!! I have looked for his work/voice for years. Thanks so much for posting. Used to love to listen to Prince, Teena Marie for hours...Still remember flashing my lights (porch lights that is)lol....
THANK YOU! THANK YOU!! For posting this on you tube this brings back memories its not like today radio shows which sucks now thats WHY some people dont listen to the radio no more. Thanks to Mojo and the music he played it was so diverse and culturally motivated that is why still today my music in my CD collection is a wide range of music. THANK GOD FOR MOJO AND HES MUSIC. WE MISS U AND LOVE U. :-)
Thank you! I just learned about Mojo tonight from a friend who grew up in Michigan - this is the only place I could find archives longer than a minute. Really appreciated.
Interesting comments guys, I too know how it feels to loose a DJ that I once Loved who is no longer on the air :*-( First time i ever heard of this guy, but his speech def. pumped me up... show solidarity to the MFA!!!
There was nothing like the MFA aka The Midnight Funk Association, I still have two membership cards. Mojo was the only dj across the country that would push the envelope of what was played on radio! You could go from hearing Prince, then Pink Floyd back to M.J., onto Queen, then to Rick James all in one night! The battle of the bands was the shhh. because you could pop in a cassette and record all of the songs from both artists!
Class of 87 in the his-ouse! St. Mary's of Redford, Cody High, Redford High (summer school lol) and Southfield - Lthrup to finish it all up! Northlands...Americana...Northland Roller Rink...skipping class at Cody to hang out at the coney island and hide from the cops lol...Trappers Alley when it used to be the SPOT!!! MEMORIES ;D
There are thousands and thousands and thousands... :D Thank you SO much mcmorris55 for posting these little snippets of Mojo hosting the MFA. It brings back so many memories of me, with my headphones on in my bedroom late at night so that my hyper-religious parents wouldn't hear me listening to the most awesome of awesome "devil music". I just regret that there aren't (as far as I can tell) any full episodes since each was such an unique aural journey... And I keep on tying that knot, btw..
Mojo among others were some of the most Coolest Disc Jockeys in Detroit. WE also had Marvelous Marv, Tiger Dan, Fudi who is still around just like they say it will never be that way again Radio is changed its all about a format instead of Getting in touch with the People as these Jocks did Especially Mojo He couldn,t do todays radio No freedom is allowed Unless he went 2 WGPR its a little emancipation on that Dial Much love to the MFA and Mojo and the Old Days.
omg!! I used to listen to MOJO religiously. He played Prince and Funkadelic on a regular!!! Anybody remember the Wizard? I think he was on fm 98 at the same time MOJO was on.
@hilldjeff Yep, we were riding a funky wave and didn't know that it was about to crash in less than a decade later. Oh, man! I wish I had pressed record on my "favorites" tape when Mojo had the B-52s in the studio and...oh!...Prince! That one was AWESOME!!! Excuse me...I have to take a private moment and boy my head in remembrance of the MFA... Hmm, I wonder if I could still send in that "Self addressed shtamped envelope" and get a member card... But...it wouldn't be as cool, I'm afraid...
A few weeks ago Techno DJ Carl Craig spearheaded a tribute to Mojo at the Taste Fest. Since not too many people know what MoJo looks like, he may have been there.
The fabric of my youth.
"May the Funk be with you...always".🤘
This is radio at its best: using imagination to draw people in by talking directly to them and yet drawing them into a larger community and in this case crossing lines of race class etc, a serious public service & then kickin out the jams!
It does not get any more Detroit than this...
Henderick Mitchell Indeed it does not, get any better than this!!
